Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

The present study aimed to make a comparison between conventional impression and intraoral scanning, establishing indications, contraindications, advantages and disadvantages for both the methods. The comparison criteria sought to elucidate the uncertainties of professionals regarding adhering to the new technology, achieving rehabilitation with greater dexterity more accurate planning or choose to continue with the convencional molding method. The results found in the analyzed literature showed that intraoral scanning has certain disadvantages, with the high cost as the main one, however, it is able to obtain satisfactory results clinically and even stand out from the primordial method. Thus, it can be concluded that intraoral scanning produces results with greater success.O presente trabalho teve como objetivo realizar uma comparação entre a moldagem convencional e o escaneamento intraoral, estabelecendo indicações, contraindicações, vantagens e desvantagens de ambos os métodos.

Trigeminal neuralgia is considered a chronic craniofacial neuropathic pain limited to the area innervated by one or more branches of the trigeminal nerve, considered one of the strongest types of pain a person can experience, considerably limiting primordial facial functions. The use of botulinum toxin has been effective in the treatment of several painful conditions, including trigeminal neuralgia, in these cases botulinum toxin type A is a safe therapeutic option, with low risk of complications and with good results. The present study aims to review the literature seeking evidence and advances in the use of botulinum toxin in the treatment of trigeminal neuralgia, discussing its mechanism of action, and the results in the treatment of this neuropathic pain. A search for articles was carried out using the following search engines: PubMed, Google Scholar, Scielo and relevant books on the subject, covering national and international literature, free original articles and available in full. Considering the limitations and objectives of this work, it can be concluded, based on the literature, that botulinum toxin type A injections are effective as a treatment for trigeminal neuralgia due to its antinociceptive mechanism; however, it should be reserved for patients who are refractory to conventional pharmacological treatment. In these patients, the use of low doses is recommended, which, according to the reviewed literature, correspond to 25 U. More clinical studies with an adequate methodology are needed, mainly comparing BTX-A with pharmacological therapies with an adequate follow-up time to know their true effectiveness.

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

The constant evolution of dentistry has allowed that teeth, previously condemned to extraction due to fractures and extensive cavities, are rehabilitated using fixed prostheses. The key to success is, however, dependent on the communication between the prosthodontist and the dental prosthetist through accurate dental impressions. The present study presents a clinical case of a patient with an upper right incisor (tooth 11) fractured at the cervical level, which was rehabilitated with a dental impression technique using an acrylic transfer cap for gingival retraction and addition silicone. This combined technique, which makes use of the best characteristics of both materials, produced an accurate impression, which in turn resulted in a high-quality prosthesis with excellent adaptation, ensuring a successful rehabilitation.

Myofascial pain (MFD) is a regional muscle dysfunction that originates from highly sensitive areas in the tight muscle, tendon or fascial band that are usually called Myofascial Trigger Points (PGMs). Among the forms of treatment for PGMs, the infiltration of substances and dry needling stand out. Thus, this study aimed to verify how these procedures are performed and compare the effectiveness of both, through a literature review. A bibliographic search was carried out in the PUBMed and Scielo databases using the time frame from 2005 to 2021. The search descriptors used were “Temporomandibular Dysfunction”, “Myofascial Pain”, “Trigger Points”, “Temporomandibular Disorder”, “ Myofascial pain”, “Tigger points”. Inclusion criteria were articles in Portuguese and English that addressed the topic. Infiltrations with substances can be done with local anesthetics, botulinum toxin and saline solution, while dry needling does not inject the substance. The findings in the literature show that both techniques are safe and effective to treat PGMs, therefore, it is up to the dentist to choose which one will be used based on the characteristics of each patient.
