    Music similarity is an essential aspect of music retrieval, recommendation systems, and music analysis. Moreover, similarity is of vital interest for music experts, as it allows studying analogies and influences among composers and historical periods. Current approaches to musical similarity rely mainly on symbolic content, which can be expensive to produce and is not always readily available. Conversely, approaches using audio signals typically fail to provide any insight about the reasons behind the observed similarity. This research addresses the limitations of current approaches by focusing on the study of musical similarity using both symbolic and audio content. The aim of this research is to develop a fully explainable and interpretable system that can provide end-users with more control and understanding of music similarity and classification systems

    The HaMSE Ontology: Using Semantic Technologies to support Music Representation Interoperability and Musicological Analysis

    The use of Semantic Technologies - in particular the Semantic Web - has revealed to be a great tool for describing the cultural heritage domain and artistic practices. However, the panorama of ontologies for musicological applications seems to be limited and restricted to specific applications. In this research, we propose HaMSE, an ontology capable of describing musical features that can assist musicological research. More specifically, HaMSE proposes to address issues that have been affecting musicological research for decades: the representation of music and the relationship between quantitative and qualitative data. To do this, HaMSE allows the alignment between different music representation systems and describes a set of musicological features that can allow the music analysis at different granularity levels

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    ChoCo: a Chord Corpus and a Data Transformation Workflow for Musical Harmony Knowledge Graphs

    Various disconnected chord datasets are currently available for music analysis and information retrieval, but they are often limited by either their size, non-openness, lack of timed information, and interoperability. Together with the lack of overlapping repertoire coverage, this limits cross-corpus studies on harmony over time and across genres, and hampers research in computational music analysis (chord recognition, pattern mining, computational creativity), which needs access to large datasets. We contribute to address this gap, by releasing the Chord Corpus (ChoCo), a large-scale dataset that semantically integrates harmonic data from 18 different sources using heterogeneous representations and formats (Harte, Leadsheet, Roman numerals, ABC, etc.). We rely on JAMS (JSON Annotated Music Specification), a popular data structure for annotations in Music Information Retrieval, to represent and enrich chord-related information (chord, key, mode, etc.) in a uniform way. To achieve semantic integration, we design a novel ontology for modelling music annotations and the entities they involve (artists, scores, etc.), and we build a 30M-triple knowledge graph, including 4 K+ links to other datasets (MIDI-LD, LED)

    The Harmonic Memory: a Knowledge Graph of harmonic patterns as a trustworthy framework for computational creativity

    Computationally creative systems for music have recently achieved impressive results, fuelled by progress in generative machine learning. However, black-box approaches have raised fundamental concerns for ethics, accountability, explainability, and musical plausibility. To enable trustworthy machine creativity, we introduce the Harmonic Memory, a Knowledge Graph (KG) of harmonic patterns extracted from a large and heterogeneous musical corpus. By leveraging a cognitive model of tonal harmony, chord progressions are segmented into meaningful structures, and patterns emerge from their comparison via harmonic similarity. Akin to a music memory, the KG holds temporal connections between consecutive patterns, as well as salient similarity relationships. After demonstrating the validity of our choices, we provide examples of how this design enables novel pathways for combinational creativity. The memory provides a fully accountable and explainable framework to inspire and support creative professionals – allowing for the discovery of progressions consistent with given criteria, the recomposition of harmonic sections, but also the co-creation of new progressions

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
