Collaborative Sensemaking of Design-Enabled Urban Innovations:: The MappingDESIGNSCAPES Case
Wicked societal problems, such as environmental issues and climatechange, are complex, networked problems involving numerous intertwined issues,no optimal solutions, and a wide range of stakeholders. Cities are problem owners and living labs for finding solutions through design-enabled innovation initiatives. However, to reach collective impact, it is paramount that these initiatives can learn from one another and align efforts through collaborative sensemaking. In the MappingDESIGNSCAPES project, we piloted a participatory collaboration mapping approach for cross-case sensemaking across design-enabled urban innovation initiatives. We used the CommunitySensor methodology for participatory community network mapping together with the Kumu online network visualization tool to help representatives of three urban prototype cases share and collectively make sense of their design lessons learnt. In this second of two papers, we build on the participatory mapping foundation introduced in [1]. We describe the collaborative sensemaking approach used, then present the core collaboration patterns andcommon perspectives that form the sensemaking scaffolding. We show how wecollaboratively made sense by first taking individual perspectives, then makingcommon sense together. A mapping from conceptual graphs to formal concept analysis
A straightforward mapping from Conceptual Graphs (CGs)
to Formal Concept Analysis (FCA) is presented. It is shown that the
benefits of FCA can be added to those of CGs, in, for example, formally
reasoning about a system design. In the mapping, a formal attribute
in FCA is formed by combining a CG source concept with its relation.
The corresponding formal object in FCA is the corresponding CG target concept. It is described how a CG, represented by triples of the
form source-concept, relation, target-concept, can be transformed into
a set of binary relations of the form (target-concept, source-concept a
relation) creating a formal context in FCA. An algorithm for the transformation is presented and for which there is a software implementation.
The approach is compared to that of Wille. An example is given of a
simple University Transaction Model (TM) scenario that demonstrates
how FCA can be applied to CGs, combining the power of each in an
integrated and intuitive way
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
The impact of conceptual structures on transaction and enterprise architecture practices
This research hypothesises is Conceptual Structures using the Resource Event Agent
(REA) ontology adds value when defining a Transaction Oriented Architecture (TOA)
for Enterprise Systems.
Enterprise Systems drive global economic growth through well-designed implementations
that provide organisations with multiple benefits, including streamlined business
processes, increased efficiencies, improved productivity and decreased costs. Conversely,
poorly implemented Enterprise Systems can lead to poor operating results.
Most Enterprise Systems still use traditional methods of storing economic data mirroring
the double-entry bookkeeping system, which can cause several problems, including
data loss and repetition. Enterprise Systems must capture transaction data in a format
available to multiple business processes to fulfil their goals.
This thesis provides an overview of the currently available frameworks for Enterprise
Architecture design. It details the problems that are observed and experienced during
the completion of real-world Enterprise System development projects. The basis of the
Transaction Concept is then presented as the general solution, leading to a TOA for
Enterprise Systems. The Transaction Pyramid describes TOA through three layers of
transactions: Enterprise, Business, and Database.
The Design Science Research Methodology (DSRM) is used as the primary research
methodology to provide a framework to this research. Together with the secondary
research method of Action Research to provide a more granular basis for DSRM Step
3 : "Design and development", which required multiple minor iterations of the cyclical
process of Action Research to produce the required artefacts. The case study approach
is used also as a secondary research method for empirical inquiry and investigation
required for DSRM step 4: "Demonstration".
A Knowledge Management System is defined to validate TOA, and artefacts are
implemented for an Automated REA (AREA) based on Protégé Frames to underpin
TOA as a Proof of Concept. AREA provides a fully-
edged, TOA design tool
for Enterprise Architecture using the REA ontology. AREA's Knowledge Repository
uses Conceptual Structures through a) the ISO Common Logic standard's Conceptual
Graph Interchange Format (CGIF) to store and transmit the TOA using an REA
ontology, and b) Formal Concept Analysis (FCA) for validation. AREA is then demonstrated
and evaluated using two industrial case studies as exemplars. These Findings
support the research's hypothesis and its contribution to knowledge
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Prolog+CG: A Maintainer's Perspective
Prolog+CG is an implementation of Prolog with Conceptual Graphs as first-class datastructures, on a par with terms. As such, it lends itself well to applications in which reasoning with Conceptual Graphs and/or ontologies plays a role. It as originally developed by Prof. Dr. Adil Kabbaj, who in 2004 turned over maintainership of Prolog+ CG to the present author. In this paper, Prolog+CG is described in terms of its history, evolution, and maintenance. A special web-enabled version of Prolog+CG is also described. Possible interoperability with CGIF and the CharGer tool are explored. Finally, we offer some general observations about the tenets that make Prolog+CG a success.</p
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
