Flora Tristan: Life Sories by Susan Grogan, investigates the life of Flora Tristan through an exploration of the way she represented herself in her own writings. Rather than adopting a chronological approach, the author surveys the personae of Flora Tristan through thematic chapters on her roles as author, socialist, traveller and "Mother of the Workers". New Query Lower Bounds for Submodular Function Minimization
No full textWe consider submodular function minimization in the oracle model: given black-box access to a submodular set function f:2^[n] → ℝ, find an element of arg min_S {f(S)} using as few queries to f(⋅) as possible. State-of-the-art algorithms succeed with Õ(n²) queries [Yin Tat Lee et al., 2015], yet the best-known lower bound has never been improved beyond n [Nicholas J. A. Harvey, 2008].
We provide a query lower bound of 2n for submodular function minimization, a 3n/2-2 query lower bound for the non-trivial minimizer of a symmetric submodular function, and a binom{n}{2} query lower bound for the non-trivial minimizer of an asymmetric submodular function.
Our 3n/2-2 lower bound results from a connection between SFM lower bounds and a novel concept we term the cut dimension of a graph. Interestingly, this yields a 3n/2-2 cut-query lower bound for finding the global mincut in an undirected, weighted graph, but we also prove it cannot yield a lower bound better than n+1 for s-t mincut, even in a directed, weighted graph

A Bicriterion Concentration Inequality and Prophet Inequalities for k-Fold Matroid Unions
No full textWe investigate prophet inequalities with competitive ratios approaching 1, seeking to generalize k-uniform matroids. We first show that large girth does not suffice: for all k, there exists a matroid of girth ≥ k and a prophet inequality instance on that matroid whose optimal competitive ratio is 1/2. Next, we show k-fold matroid unions do suffice: we provide a prophet inequality with competitive ratio 1-O(√{(log k)/k}) for any k-fold matroid union. Our prophet inequality follows from an online contention resolution scheme.
The key technical ingredient in our online contention resolution scheme is a novel bicriterion concentration inequality for arbitrary monotone 1-Lipschitz functions over independent items which may be of independent interest. Applied to our particular setting, our bicriterion concentration inequality yields "Chernoff-strength" concentration for a 1-Lipschitz function that is not (approximately) self-bounding

Even her love life was marked by separations and numerous and painful wanderings from place to place around the world. Flora Tristan, Precursor Lecture by Magda Portal
No full textA major figure in Latin American struggles for women\u27s rights and social justice, Magda Portal (1900-1989) co-founded the revolutionary nationalist APRA Party of Peru and was the principal women\u27s leader of that party. In her Chilean exile Portal discovered the nineteenth century writer and social reformer, Flora Tristan. In 1944 Portal offered her first lecture on Tristan (1803-1844)—a brilliant diarist and journalist as well as a seminal social theorist, labor organizer, champion of women\u27s rights, and a significant precursor—arguably co-founder—of socialist internationalism. Expanding and revising her initial account, Portal continued into her later years to lecture on Tristan, whom she revered as an exemplary social fighter. The introduction by Weaver, author of Peruvian Rebel, The World of Magda Portal, situates the lecture in the context of Portal\u27s own life and her evolving views on the role of women in a developing country, noting parallels between Portal\u27s life and that of Tristan. Portal\u27s admiring narrative starts with Tristan\u27s beginnings as the daughter of an aristocratic Peruvian landowner living in Spain and France, proceeding through the father\u27s death, the family\u27s impoverishment, and Tristan\u27s awakening to the social misery occasioned by rapid industrialization. Portal traces Tristan\u27s journey to Peru to present herself as a hopeful but unrecognized heir to her late father\u27s lands. The publication of Tristan\u27s Peruvian diaries is mentioned: an acerbic critique of a decadent colonial upper class. Portal also treats Tristan\u27s travels in industrial London; her attempts to organize workers throughout the industrial zones of France; her involvement with the Chartists, the Utopians, and the proto-socialist circles that included Marx and Engels; as well as her attempts to escape a homicidal husband when divorce in France was outlawed. Main analyzed literary works are legend of Tristan and Isolde and Cligès. Another book is included to them: Frayre de Joy et Sor de Plaser because of its close relationship to those works by its topic of love and magical element. Many authors have composed books about the myth of Tristan and Isolde. This work is based on its French versions, written by Béroul, Thomas, Marie de France, Folie Tristan of Berne and Oxford, and Old Norwegian Saga whose author did not write it in French, but it had complete Thomas`s version as a model. Chrétien de Troyes, famous medieval writer, has created Cligès. The last literary work used in this thesis is an Occitan novel by an anonymous author. Theme of love triangle in Tristan and Isolde corresponds with the one in Cligès. It consists of a husband, a wife and her lover who is her husband's nephew. There are magic potions having great influence on the love of the main heroes in both of these stories. Freyre de Joy et Sor de Plaser has got a similar theme of the extramarital love and the magic herb. First chapter dwells on legend of Tristan and Isolde, the authors, main characters and the story...

Optimal Item Pricing in Online Combinatorial Auctions
No full textWe consider a fundamental pricing problem in combinatorial auctions. We are given a set of indivisible items and a set of buyers with randomly drawn monotone valuations over subsets of items. A decision maker sets item prices and then the buyers make sequential purchasing decisions, taking their favorite set among the remaining items. We parametrize an instance by d, the size of the largest set a buyer may want. Our main result asserts that there exist prices such that the expected (over the random valuations) welfare of the allocation they induce is at least a factor 1/ (d+ 1 ) times the expected optimal welfare in hindsight. Moreover we prove that this bound is tight. Thus, our result not only improves upon the 1/ (4 d- 2 ) bound of Dütting et al., but also settles the approximation that can be achieved by using item prices. We further show how to compute our prices in polynomial time.
