Dall’Amazzonia all’Italia: la storia della raccolta etnografica Ermanno Stradelli (1852-1926)
During the 'Esposizione delle missioni cattoliche americane' in 1892, part of the ethnographic collection by Count Ermanno Stradelli, which can be found today in the museum of castello di Rivalta, reached the city of Genoa. The Author examines how this collection was put together in Amazonia in between the years 1881 and 1891 and describes the man Stradelli as an accurate researcher of the indigenous cultures, exposing the reasons behind his collection of material assets related to the culture of the Uaupés ethnicity. Energy management and guidelines to digitalisation of integrated natural gas distribution systems equipped with expander technology
In a swirling dynamic interaction, digital innovation, environment and
anthropological evolution are swiftly shaping the smart grid scenario. Integration
and flexibility are the keywords in this emergent picture characterised by a low
carbon footprint. Digitalisation, within the natural limits imposed by the
thermodynamics, seems to offer excellent opportunities for these purposes. Of
course, here starts a new challenge: how digital technologies should be employed
to achieve these objectives? How would we ensure a digital retrofit does not lead to
a carbon emission increase? In author opinion, as long as it remains a generalised
question, none answer exists: the need to contextualise the issue emerges from the
variety of the characteristics of the energy systems and from their interactions with
external processes. To address these points, in the first part of this research, the
author presented a collection of his research contributions to the topic related to the
energy management in natural gas pressure reduction station equipped with turbo
expander technology. Furthermore, starting from the state of the art and the author's
previous research contributions, the guidelines for the digital retrofit for a specific
kind of distributed energy system, were outlined. Finally, a possible configuration
of the ideal ICT architecture is extracted. This aims to achieve a higher level of
coordination involving, natural gas distribution and transportation, local energy
production, thermal user integration and electric vehicles charging. Finally, the
barriers and the risks of a digitalisation process are critically analysed outlining in
this way future research needs
Repertoire Lives. Ermanno Cavazzoni’s Human Collections
In his repertoires, Ermanno Cavazzoni collects idiotic characters and useless writers, in the wake of Gianni Celati’s weirdos, who are openly created in opposition to modern civilization. Through the principle of synecdoche, these few figures represent humanity in general. In Cavazzoni’s production, the rigidity of the repertorial structure, which looks to the models of medieval exempla, hagiographic stories and the most fashionable teaching manuals for young writers, comes into crisis, deviating into the parodic region of counter-possibilities. What we intend to emphasize here is how the Oulipian matrix of these narratives, declared in the combinatorial table of Gli scrittori inutili, appears partly different from that of the French authors. Cavazzoni suggests meaning beyond the self-imposed norms in a more explicit, subversive way. The author shows the rule and the tension toward an uncontrollable liquidity, pointing out the radical pessimism about humankind. In this perspective, the social function of the man of letters also fails: still on the model of Celati, and in contrast with the collaborative spirit of Oulipo, Cavazzoni reiterates his preference towards the figure of the hermit, for the secluded, resorting to the collection of lives to demonstrate his theorem.
Co-designed signals. Designing an open wayfinding system
A wayfinding system is a structured system of signs that has the aim to inform
and orientate users in specific areas. A site becomes accessible to users through
such kind of systems. Wayfinding helps to communicate and make clear functions,
paths and becomes a true interface between a place and the users. Signals can have
a stronger role in terms of visual language in making evidence to a place’s identity.
Enhancing it at the same time. Using Christian Norberg-Schulz words, a user is
able to orientate him self in a site when the experience of that place is for him comprehensible.
Usually a wayfinding system is designed as a closed and forced system,
superimposed to a place’s surfaces or spaces. But there are places that need a specific
design concept to be adaptable to users needs, that change over time. Or to be adaptable
to the place’s needs, that change phisically over time.
Through an experimental project has been possible to set up an open wayfinding
system for a parkland particularly used by free-climbers. A climbing area is a
site where people can exercice their passion in rock free climbing and spend time
outdoor. The site called Falesi di Calusco d’Adda - in the neighbourhood of Milan –
is known for have inspired the background view of Leonardo da Vinci masterpiece
“Gioconda (Mona Lisa)”. The site is visited and used from enthusiastic free climbers,
who use to personalize and naming climbing ways all around the site.
This context inspired a design concept for an open system of signs and typography.
The concept is based on a set of elements and rules to be downloaded through
a web site to implement information and orientation around the site. The specific
web site has the aim to make accesible all the useful instructions and downloadable
documents. The system is based on a set of pictograms and a personalized stencil
font (the Calusco Font), to be reproduced on wood or stone, depending on the users’
needs. The all visual design has been inspired by primitive signs and adapted to the
need to reproduce it on different kind of surfaces using ecologic paint-spray.
All the design has been conceived to be easy to use from everybody, with a low
budget and by making just a restricted numbers of operations. In this way the outdoor
site can be enhanced by the community of users, that is engaged and partecipate
himself to the process. The designer is not anymore just the author of a closed visual
system, but of an open user-oriented process and accept the possibility that the
community uses the elements in a freely way. This responding to an actual trend of
engaging communities in the design and in the application of a designed system.
The aim of this paper is to present this experimental project, describing his design
process and discuss some of the above mentioned topics
The CLAS Electromagnetic Spectrometer at Large Angle
The study of the response of the two modules of the large-angle electromagnetic shower calorimeter of the CLAS detector to charged and neutral particles is reported. The results agree very well with the Monte Carlo simulation. The procedures adopted for the energy and timing calibration are also discussed, proving that the module geometry allows for simple self-calibrating energy and timing algorithms
Productivity, wages and intrinsic motivation in social enterprises
In our empirical analysis of wage differentials in a sample of workers in the cooperative not for profit sector we find that, consistently with the donative-labor hypothesis, more intrinsically motivated workers “donate more work” (unpaid overtime, arrear holidays) but are also more productive and earn significantly higher wages. Our results are robust to several measures of workers’ remuneration and controlled for endogeneity. We interpret these findings by arguing that the hypothesis of the static negative correlation between intrinsic motivations and wages (where intrinsic motivations work as a compensating differential) is dominated by the effect by which intrinsic motivations cause or are a signal of higher productivity.Productivity; wages; intrinsic motivation; social enterprises
Chapter Una rete di integrazione: il matrimonio
The author addresses the theme of the integration of foreigners starting from marriage as a mediation tool (so far not investigated in this way) and comparing two cities that experienced intense immigration phenomena, Venice and Rome. The analysis focuses on endogamous and exogamous marriage to understand the methods that allowed the immigrant to become part of consolidated professional and social networks. The attention to cohabitations and more uxorio ties, recognized by the church as presumptions of marriage, as well as plural marriages of immigrants, appears original
A Taste of Your Own Medicine: American Capitalism in Italy
2022 Pamela J. Mackintosh Undergraduate Research Awards, Single-Term Award, 2nd placeIn a course-related research paper, the author considered current U.S. labor politics as a basis to critically analyze the reception of an Italian film (Ermanno Olmi's Il Posto from 1961), a film that reflected the director's criticism of Italian society, social isolation, and modern corporate culture. Conducting historical research to locate film reviews allowed the exploration of film critique and reception of film goers in the U.S., through a unique lens of American values and unionized labor.http://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/174683/1/Ben_Michalsky_Research_Paper.docx.pdfhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/174683/2/FTVM_358_Bibliography.pdfDescription of Ben_Michalsky_Research_Paper.docx.pdf : Main ProjectDescription of FTVM_358_Bibliography.pdf : Works CitedSEL
