Licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland.Organic light emitting transistors (OLETs) combine, in the same device, the function of an electrical switch with the capability of generating light under appropriate bias conditions. In this work, we demonstrate how engineering the dielectric layer based on high-k polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF)-based polymers can lead to a drastic reduction of device driving voltages and the improvement of its optoelectronic properties. We first investigated the morphology and the dielectric response of these polymer dielectrics in terms of polymer (P(VDF-TrFE) and P(VDF-TrFE-CFE)) and solvent content (cyclopentanone, methylethylketone). Implementing these high-k PVDF-based dielectrics enabled low-bias ambipolar organic light emitting transistors, with reduced threshold voltages (<20 V) and enhanced light output (compared to conventional polymer reference), along with an overall improvement of the device efficiency. Further, we preliminary transferred these fluorinated high-k dielectric films onto a plastic substrate to enable flexible light emitting transistors. These findings hold potential for broader exploitation of the OLET platform, where the device can now be driven by commercially available electronics, thus enabling flexible low-bias organic electronic devices.Peer reviewe

    C.S. Lewis as Transformational Leader

    The term leadership usually evokes images of great warriors, politicians, or social figures that saturate the pages of a history textbook. However, these are pre-conceived notions of the term. Leaders are those who exercise influence, be they soldiers, politicians, or even artists such as writers and musicians. One such leader is author and apologist C.S. Lewis. Lewis spoke to his generation (and many subsequent ones) in his texts. Through Lewis, many have achieved a greater understanding of literature, spirituality, and human nature. His words have, in essence, transformed the minds of readers. Transformational leadership is desired because it performs what is implied in its title: it transforms others. Transformational leaders increase both motivation and morality in their followers. They lead with conviction, ultimately empowering followers to become leaders. Bass (1985) posits that transformational leaders exhibit four qualities: idealized influence, inspirational motivation, intellectual stimulation, and individualized consideration. Upon exploring transformational leadership theory, it is evident that C.S. Lewis exhibits all four qualities of a transformational leader. Lewis has led many from the desert of spiritual ambiguity into a better understanding of God and of ourselves. His words still resonate in culture and demonstrate the lasting influence of his legacy

Lewis, we will let Jack speak about himself through his letters: what he loved, such as books, seasons/weather, walking tours, bathing, Ireland, animals, convalescence, Joy, and writing; what he loathed: writing letters, Americans, cities, TV, newspapers, movies, modern novels/poetry/theology; what he feared; what he didn\u27t understand; and what he regretted, as well as his descriptions of what he looked like, what he did well, what he did badly. I will force myself with Great Difficulty (because of all the choice bits I will have to leave out) to limit these tastes of his sixty-year three-volume, 3,600 page, 9-1/2 pound correspondence to what can be savored in twenty minutes! \u27Parascriptural\u27 Revelation in C.S. Lewis - J.C. Calhoun In the theology of C.S. Lewis, God is rather verbose and unrestrained in the manners and means of communication. God must be understood as the speaking God; anything less will not do Him justice. The few extant works about Lewis\u27s theology of revelation focus on scripture, and though this is an important topic, one cannot understand it properly without first understanding how God speaks in general. This paper explicates his epistemology as a foundation, and then under the rubric of basic communication theory (author, text, recipient, re-texting), presents eleven \u27parascriptural\u27 paths through which God speaks as mentioned in Lewis\u27s writings. The term \u27parascriptural\u27 - \u27para\u27 in the sense of \u27beside\u27 or \u27alongside of\u27 - is used instead of \u27General Revelation\u27 because the traditional division between General and Special Revelation forces categories upon Lewis that are alien to his thought. After presenting these eleven paths, they are categorized and related back to his epistemology. The paper then finishes as it should, with tantalizing questions about what this means for understanding Lewis and why it is important in our own lives. Moderator: Robert Moore-Jumonvill

    Muscle strength deficiency and mitochondrial dysfunction in a muscular dystrophy model of C. elegans and its functional response to drugs

    Muscle strength is a key clinical parameter used to monitor the progression of human muscular dystrophies including Duchenne and Becker muscular dystrophies. Although Caenorhabditis elegans is an established genetic model for studying mechanisms and treatments of muscular dystrophies, analogous strength-based measurements in this disease model are lacking. Here we describe the first demonstration of the direct measurement of muscular strength in dystrophin-deficient C. elegans mutants using a micropillar-based force measurement system called NemaFlex. We show that dys-1(eg33) mutants, but not dys-1(cx18) mutants, are significantly weaker than their wild-type counterparts in early adulthood, cannot thrash in liquid at wild-type rates, and display mitochondrial network fragmentation in the body wall muscles as well as abnormally high baseline mitochondrial respiration. Furthermore, treatment with prednisone, the standard treatment for muscular dystrophy in humans, and melatonin both improve muscular strength, thrashing rate, and mitochondrial network integrity in dys-1(eg33), and prednisone treatment also returns baseline respiration to normal levels. Thus, our results demonstrate that the dys-1(eg33) strain is more clinically relevant than dys-1(cx18) for muscular dystrophy studies in C. elegans. This finding in combination with the novel NemaFlex platform can be used as an efficient workflow for identifying candidate compounds that can improve strength in the C. elegans muscular dystrophy model. Our study also lays the foundation for further probing of the mechanism of muscle function loss in dystrophin-deficient C. elegans, leading to knowledge translatable to human muscular dystrophy
