Modelamiento de los parámetros ambientales de la distribución de Goya-Malabrigo mediante Maxent

    No full text
Fil: Politis, Gustavo Gabriel. The effect of calcium on mammary epithelial cell proliferation and the plasminogen activating system

    No full text
The objectives of this study were to examine 1) the effect of extracellular calcium on proliferation of bovine mammary epithelial cells, 2) whether extracellular calcium regulates the mitogenic effect of insulin-like growth factor (IGF-I) and epidermal growth factor (EGF) towards mammary epithelial cells, and 3) whether the effects of calcium on growth are mediated through changes in the plasminogen activating system. The BME-UV1 cells were used as a model system. Results showed that optimal proliferation of BME-UV1 cells grown in the presence of 10% dialyzed FBCS was achieved when the culture medium was supplemented with 1-2 mmol L-1 of extracellular Ca2+. IGF-I (P<0.01) but not EGF, increased proliferation of BME-UV1 cells. Furthermore, calcium does not regulate IGF-I and EGF responsiveness of BME-UV1 cells. Northern blot analysis was performed to examine the effect of extracellular calcium on expression of urokinase-type plasminogen activator (u-PA), PA inhibitor 1 (PAI-1) and u-PA receptor (u-PAR) genes by BME-UV1 cells in culture. Results showed that calcium increased expression of all above-mentioned genes after 24 h of exposure of cells to calcium, at a time that the effect of calcium on growth was not apparent. Calcium had no effect on u-PA and u-PAR expression after 48 and 72 h of exposure of cells to calcium, at a time that the effect of calcium on growth was predominant. Calcium caused a small increase of PAI-1 expression after 48 and 72 h but this small increase is apparently of limited biological value

Effect of Vitamin E Supplementation on Various Functional Properties of Macrophages and Neutrophils Obtained from Weaned Piglets

Sixteen piglets were used to determine the effect of vitamin E supplementation on several functional properties of macrophages and neutrophils obtained from weaned piglets. Piglets, immediately following weaning, were assigned to one of three experimental groups: control (no vitamin E supplementation), low level of vitamin E supplementation (100 mg DL-α-tocopheryl acetate/kg diet) and high level of vitamin E supplementation (300 mg DL-α-tocopheryl acetate/kg diet). Supplementation of vitamin E lasted for a period of 36 days, following a 3-day adaptation period after weaning. Blood samples were collected on days 0, 12, 24 and 36 of the experimental period, monocytes/macrophages and neutrophils were isolated and the following parameters were determined in macrophages and neutrophils activated by phorbol myristate acetate: total cell-associated and membrane-bound urokinase plasminogen activator (u-PA) activity and Superoxide anion production. Results showed that macrophages and neutrophils isolated from piglets that received supplemental vitamin E had higher (P 0.05) on total and membrane-bound u-PA activities and superoxide anion production by porcine macrophages and neutrophils on days 24 and 36 of the experimental period. In conclusion, the low level of vitamin E supplementation is recommended for piglets for the first 2 weeks after weaning

Oxidative stress in periparturient dairy cows and its relationship with negative energy balance markers

Living organism’s defensive systems are very sensitive and complex mechanisms. Endogenous production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) is one of the main way these systems can achieve their goals. On the other side, ROS can be dangerous also for the living cells and the right balance between pro-oxidant and antioxidant is essential to avoid oxidative stress. Peripartum is typically a very stressful period of life in producing animals and dairy cows can experience a negative redox status at this time. The aim of the trial was to study the relationship between negative energy balance markers such as NEFA and BHBA and oxidative stress in transition dairy cows. Thirty Holstein Friesian dairy cows over 2 commercial farms located in Milan area were involved in the trial. Blood samples were collected at dry-off, at calving and at 30 DIM. ROS and serum antioxidant capacity (SAC) were measured on samples and the Oxidative Stress index (OSi) was calculated. On the same samples NEFA, BHBA and α-tocopherol concentrations were determined. Statistical analysis was performed with MIXED and CORR procedures of SAS. NEFA and BHBA increased around parturition compared with dry off levels (P < 0.05). At 30 DIM, NEFA decreased to concentrations similar to pre-partum, BHBA concentration instead remained high. α-tocopherol blood levels decreased at calving and increased at 30 DIM at higher values than dry-off (3.12 vs.. 3.59 μg/mL, P < 0.05). ROS results were not significant over the time and SAC values showed a tendency (P = 0.05) to have lower concentration at calving compared with dry-off. OSi results were significantly higher at calving compared with pre-calving (0.167 vs.. 0.214, P < 0.05) and 30 DIM indexes (0.214 vs.. 0.178, P < 0.05). There was a positive correla-tion between NEFA (0.44, P < 0.05) and BHBA (0.28, P < 0.05) serum levels and OSi. The results observed, consolidate the goodness of OSi in detecting oxidative stress in transition cows

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    No full text
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Response of dairy ewes in late lactation to recombinant bovine somatotropin

    No full text
This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of recombinant bovine somatotropin (rbST) administration to dairy ewes in late lactation on milk yield, composition, clotting parameters, and plasmin/plasminogen system. Eighty multiparous lactating Comisana ewes (186±18 days in lactation) were randomly assigned to one of two treatments: control and rbST. Slow-release rbST (120 mg/ewe) was administered for two injection cycles of 21 days each. Recombinant bovine somatotropin treatment increased milk (589.7 vs. 483.7 g/d; p < 0.01), protein (35.5 vs. 31.4 g/d; p < 0.05) and lactose (27.3 vs. 23.1 g/d; p < 0.05) yields. The percentage of milk fat (8.2% vs. 8.9%; p < 0.01) and protein (6.0% vs. 6.2%; p < 0.05) decreased, while somatic cells count and pH were unaffected by rbST treatment. Administration of rbST decreased milk coagulation time (r) (12 vs. 13.1 min; p < 0.05), while firming rate (k20) and curd firmness (a30) were unaffected. Plasminogen activity of milk was lower in rbST-treated ewes (18.11 vs. 21.89 U/ml; p < 0.01)
