Poirot, the Bourgeois Prophet: Agatha Christie’s Biblical Adaptations
Agatha Christie’s canon from the Golden Age of crime fiction is sometimes said to be surpassed in popularity only by the Bible. In this chapter, I argue that Christie’s popular detective hero, Hercule Poirot, can be read as a mode of adapting religion to the modern world of Europe after the First World War. Specifically, I suggest that Poirot is presented as a modern prophetic figure. His prophetic persona straddles the secular/sacred boundary in his commitment to rationality, a bourgeois sensibility, and to a moderate form of religiosity. Through the figure of Poirot, Christie reimagines religion as morally relevant for the individual in the local sphere rather than in an overtly political or explicitly theological sense. The Bible is treated as an archive of universal archetypes that remains current for understanding human nature, for determining continuity and universality in a world that is experienced as fractured, threatening and discontinuous
Comparative analysis of the Arabidopsis and rice expressed sequence tag (EST) sets
Large numbers of expressed sequence tags (ESTs) have now been generated from a variety of model organisms. In plants, substantial collections of ESTs are available for Arabidopsis and rice, in each case representing significant proportions of the estimated total numbers of genes. Large-scale comparisons of Arabidopsis and rice sequences are especially interesting due to the fact that these two species are representatives of the two subclasses of the flowering plants (Dicotyledonae and Monocotyledonae, respectively). Here we present the results of systematic analysis of the Arabidopsis and rice EST sets. Non-redundant sets of sequences from Arabidopsis and rice were first separately derived and then combined so that gene families in common between the two species could be identified. Our results show that 58% of non-singleton ESTs are derived from genes in gene families common to the two species. These gene families constitute the basis of a core set of higher plant genes
Style as a Portrayal of Time: Art deco Architecture in the Poirot Films
Tutkimuskysymykseni on, miten art deco -arkkitehtuuri ilmentää ajankuvaa Poirot-elokuvissa.
Aav ym., 2005) ja The Routledge Companion to Art Deco (Elliot, B., Windower, M. 2019).
Natural and semisynthetic oxyprenylated aromatic compounds as stimulators or inhibitors of melanogenesis
It has been very recently shown how naturally occurring oxyprenylated coumarins are effective modulators of melanogenesis. In this short communication we wish to generalize the potentialities as skin tanning or whitening agents of a wider panel of natural and semisynthetic aromatic compounds, including coumarins, cinnamic and benzoic acids, cinnamaldehydes, benzaldehyde, and anthraquinone derivatives. A total number of 43 compounds have been tested assaying their capacity to inhibit or stimulate melanin biosynthesis in cultured murine Melan A cells. The wider number of chemicals herein under investigation allowed to depict a detailed structure-activity relationship, as the following: (a) benzoic acid derivatives are slightly pigmenting agent, for which the effect is more pronounced in compounds with longer O-side chains; (b) independently from the type of substitution, cinnamic acids are able to increase melanin biosynthesis, while benzaldehydes are able to decrease it; (c) coumarins with a 3,3-dimethylallyl or shorter skeletons as substituents in position 7 are tanning agents, while coumarins with farnesyloxy groups are whitening ones; (d) double oxyprenylation in position 6 and 7 and 3,3-dimethylallyl or geranyl skeletons have slight depigmenting capacities, while farnesyl skeletons tend to marginally increase the tanning effect; (e) the presence of electron withdrawing groups (acetyl, COOH, and -Cl) and geranyl or farnesyl oxyprenylated chains respectively in positions 3 and 7 of the coumarin nucleus lead to a whitening effect, and finally (f) oxyprenylated anthraquinones have only a weak depigmenting capacity
Oxysterols and sterols: From lipidomics to food sciences
Sterols are lipophilic compounds that can be classified into phytosterols, zoosterols and mycosterols depending on their natural origin (plant, animal and fungal, respectively). Among zoosterols, cholesterol, which can however be synthesized by some plants, is the most well known. In humans, cholesterol is produced endogenously and can be also introduced through the diet. In the blood, cholesterol is transported by lipoproteins, and the accumulation of low density lipoproteins (LDL) in the arterial wall favor the formation of the atherosclerotic plaque, leading to various cardiovascular diseases. In this process, the oxidation of LDL by reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (ROS and RNS) produced by activated resident macrophages and foam cells favors both LDL oxidation and cholesterol oxidation. This local overproduction of ROS and RNS contributes to the auto-oxidation of cholesterol and to the formation of oxysterols (cholesterol oxidation products), mainly 7-ketocholesterol (7KC), also named 7-oxo-cholesterol, and 7β-hydroxycholesterol (7β-OHC) and 5,6-epoxycholesterols. In addition to cardiovascular diseases, these oxysterols, mainly formed by auto-oxidation of cholesterol, are also associated with chronic and aged-related diseases such as neurodegenerative, eye and bowel diseases. Diet and cooking habits are also important sources of cholesterol and oxysterols. While dietary cholesterol and oxysterols are rapidly metabolized by the liver into bile acids, the transient increase of these molecules in the plasma can favor their accumulation in the arterial wall. In addition, high oxysterol content in foods could also favor bowel diseases. More recently, due to the rupture of RedOx homeostasia in aging and major neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer’s disease (AD), Parkinson’s diseases, and multiple sclerosis (MS), a potential role of 7KC and 7β-OHC is suspected in this context as well as in cancer. Besides the contribution of oxysterols formed by auto-oxidation and deriving from the diet, several other oxysterols formed enzymatically play major roles in the pathophysiology of numerous diseases. This is the case of Dendrogenin A (DDA), 5,6-epoxycholesterols and 27-hydroxycholesterol in cancer, of 24S-hydroxycholesterol in neurodegeneration (mainly AD), and of 25-hydroxycholesterol and some of its metabolites in MS. Several cytoplasmic and nuclear receptors associated with oxysterol-biological activities have also been identified and the most famous are oxysterol binding proteins (OSBPs) and LXRs receptors. The latter is involved in the control of numerous biological processes (i.e. cancerization and myelin sheath synthesis). In this context, the 8th European Network for Oxysterol Research (ENOR;http://www.oxysterols.net/) Symposium (“Oxysterols and Sterols: from Lipidomics to Food Sciences”), held in Bologna from 20 to 21 September 2018, made it possible to have an overview on the implication of sterols and their oxidation products in human health

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
