Audiomobiles, Sculptures and Conundrums
Roberto Gerhard was a pioneer of electronic music in England creating a number of substantial concert, theatre and radio works from as early as 1954. Gerhard’s electronic music is one of the richest repositories for understanding the development of the composer’s late compositional technique. Apart from the Symphony no.3, ‘Collages’, none of Gerhard’s electronic music is published. This paper will discuss aspects of Gerhard’s electronic music, focusing on Audiomobiles (1958-59) and Sculptures (1963)
Enterprise restructuring in Eastern Europe : how much? how fast? where? - preliminary evidence from trade data
What kind of privatization program is best suited to stimulate enterprise restructuring in former centrally planned economies? One view, expressed by most Western business and political leaders, is that privatization is best pursued case by case, with emphasis on sales to new owners, including foreign investors. Another view, espoused by a minority of"radical"economists and economists-turned-politicians, was that restructuring is best pursued through economic incentives, combined with"mass privatization of state enterprises so that they become widely held (public) joint stock corporations. The ultimate test, of course, is future productivity growth and rising welfare standards. We cannot yet measure these. The disaggregated data on production and employment by industry required for such a measure either are not available or are unreliable. The only objective measure available - comparable across countries - is export performance. Trade data reveal to what extent firms have been able to reorient themselves to create and exploit competitive advantages. We now have four years of data, enough to get an idea of what is going on, and to compare one Central or Eastern European country's performance against another's. The data suggest that the Czech Republic, the country that has pursued mass privatization most actively and credibly, has also done best in restructuring its industries and reorienting them toward world markets. Those that pursued a gradualist approach - Hungary being the main example - have changed their export structure less, but export growth has also been above average.Environmental Economics&Policies,Economic Theory&Research,Agribusiness&Markets,Trade Policy,Water and Industry,TF054105-DONOR FUNDED OPERATION ADMINISTRATION FEE INCOME AND EXPENSE ACCOUNT,Economic Theory&Research,Agribusiness&Markets,Trade Policy,Water and Industry
Carybdea morandinii Straehler-Pohl & Jarms, 2011, sp. nov.
Carybdea morandinii, sp. nov. Holotype — one preserved cubopolyp, from a culture established from specimens obtained in a saltwater tank at Hagenbecks Tierpark, Hamburg, Germany, and originally from east Asia, deposited in collections of the Zoologisches Institut und Zoologisches Museum, Universität Hamburg (ZMH) No.C. 11999. Paratype series — 20 preserved, fully developed cubopolyps with buds, 10 preserved cubopolyps without buds, one young medusa, and five preserved creeping cubopolyps, ZMH No.C. 11750. Type locality — On coral rock, originally from east Asia, in a seawater tank at Hagenbecks Tierpark (Zoo), Hamburg, Germany. Additional material – living polyps under cultivation in our laboratory. Etymology — The specific name “ morandinii ” honours Dr. André Carrara Morandini, a well known Medusozoa morphologist and taxonomist. Dr. Morandini was working as a guest researcher in our laboratory when the species was discovered. His knowledge of Cubozoa helped determine that the cubopolyps likely represented a new species. Roberto Gerhard’s Sound Compositions: A Historical-Philological Perspective. Archive, Process, Intent and reenactment
This research advances the current state of knowledge in the field of early tape music both empirically and methodologically. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the impact that the electronic medium exerted in the musical thinking of Roberto Gerhard, one of the most outspoken, prolific and influential composers in the Spanish diaspora whose musical legacy, for the most part unknown, is a major landmark in the early history of electroacoustic music. Gerhard’s personal tape collection, one of the largest historical archives of its kind reported in the literature, is exceptional for both its antiquity (50+-year-old tapes) and its abundance of production materials. Through the digitisation and analysis of the composer’s tape collection this research argues that the empirical study of audio documents sets out a basis for a broader understanding of textual processes. More specifically, the research demonstrates that the reconstruction of works based on magnetic tape sketches is a powerful method to advance the understanding of early tape music. This research also examines Gerhard’s sound compositions in relation to the post-war context in which they were composed. Finally, this research presents performance documentation that proposes an approach to the electroacoustic music repertoire in which creativity is not at odds with rigor and critical discernment demonstrating that archival study can be closely aligned to the concept of re-enactment
