    Identification of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (pcos) Specific Genes in Cumulus and Mural Granulosa Cells

    Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a metabolic and endocrine disorder which affects women of reproductive age with prevalence of 8-18%. The oocyte within the follicle is surrounded by cumulus cells (CCs), which connect with mural granulosa cells (MGCs) that are responsible for secreting steroid hormones. The main aim of this study is comparing gene expression profiles of MGCs and CCs in PCOS and control samples to identify PCOS-specific differentially expressed genes (DEGs). In this study, two microarray databases were searched for mRNA expression microarray studies performed with CCs and MGCs obtained from PCOS patients and control samples. Three independent studies were selected to be integrated with naive meta-analysis since raw meta-data from these studies were found to be highly correlated. DEGs in these somatic cells were identified for PCOS and control groups. This study enabled us to reveal dysregulation in MAPK (mitogen activated protein kinase), insulin and Wnt signaling pathways between CCs and MGCs in PCOS.     "Hazards associated with occupational exposure to ethylene-thiourea (96457) (ETU) are reviewed. The chemical and physical properties of ETU are described and worker exposures during manufacture, production, and application are discussed. The extent of occupational exposure to ETU is assessed. The biological effects of ETU are reviewed based on laboratory animal studies. The potential effects of ETU on humans are also considered. The author concludes that ETU is a potential carcinogen and teratogen. Recommendations include worker education regarding the hazards of ETU, use of EUT in encapsulated forms, proper labeling of ETU, and the use of sanitary practices in the workplace." - NIOSHTIC-

    Simulation-Based Design and Optimization of Francis Turbine Runners by Using Multiple Types of Metamodels

    In recent years, optimization started to become popular in several engineering disciplines such as aerospace, automotive and turbomachinery. Optimization is also a powerful tool in hydraulic turbine industry to find the best performance of turbines and their sub-elements. However, direct application of the optimization techniques in design of hydraulic turbines is impractical due to the requirement of performing computationally expensive analysis of turbines many times during optimization. Metamodels (or surrogate models) that can provide fast response predictions and mimic the behavior of nonlinear simulation models provide a remedy. In this study, simulation-based design of Francis type turbine runner is performed by following a metamodel-based optimization approach that uses multiple types of metamodels. A previously developed computational fluid dynamics-based methodology is integrated to the optimization process, and the results are compared to the results obtained from on-going computational fluid dynamics studies. The results show that, compared to the conventional methods such as computational fluid dynamics-based methods, metamodel-based optimization can shorten the design process time by a factor of 9.2. In addition, with the help of optimization, turbine performance is increased while cavitation on the turbine blades, which can be harmful for the turbine and reduce its lifespan, is reduced.The author(s) disclosed receipt of the following financial support for the research, authorship, and/or publication of this article: This study is financially supported by the Ministry of Development of Turkey.     Optimized Hexagonal Photonic Crystal Fibre Sensor for Glucose Sensing

    Aims: This paper presents an optimised hexagonal photonic crystal fibre (PCF) geometry for investigation of relative sensitivities for 20%, 30%, 40%, 50% and 60% of glucose solution in water at a wavelength ranging from 1200 nm to 1600 nm. This work also shows an active area and confinement loss variation of the optimised hexagonal PCF when the core is filled with different concentrations of glucose solution. Study Design:  Here, optimised hexagonal photonic crystal fiber (PCF) geometry is chosen where COMSOL Multiphysics software is used for simulation. Place and Duration of Study: Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering at Khulna University, Khulna-9208, Bangladesh and Study duration was between March 2017 and December 2017. Methodology: At first, 20%, 30%, 40%, 50% and 60% of glucose solution in water with different refractive indexes are inserted through the core of the modified Hexagonal PCF. Then, the simulation is done by varying wavelength from 1200 nm to 1600 nm. Here, Comsol Multiphysics is used for simulation and MATLAB is used to plot the desired optical properties of the proposed PCF geometry. Results: From this work, the relative sensitivities are obtained approximately 28.6, 33.09, 36.97, 40.37, 44.81 in percentage at wavelength 1200 nm and 35.27, 37.63, 41.15, 44.98, 47.87 in percentage at wavelength 1600 nm for 20%, 30%, 40%, 50% and 60% of glucose solution in water respectively. Again, the effective areas are found approximately 16.306 μm2, 17.285 μm2, 18.207 μm2, 19.209 μm2, 19.729 μm2 at wavelength 1200 nm and 18.823 μm2, 19.495 μm2, 20.21 μm2, 20.739 μm2, 20.954 μm2 at wavelength 1600 nm for 20%, 30%, 40%, 50% and 60% of glucose solution in water respectively. The confinement losses are approximately 2.1×10-8 dB/Km, 0.78×10-8 dB/Km, 0.15×10-8 dB/Km for 20%, 30%, and 40% of glucose solution in water respectively at wavelength 1500 nm but for 50% and 60% of glucose solution, the confinement loss is approximately zero from 1200 nm to 1600 nm. Conclusion: High sensitive Glucose sensor is achieved with optimised Hexagonal PCF structure which was the main target of this research. &nbsp

    The long-wavelength view of GG Tau A: rocks in the ring world

    We present the first detection of GG Tau A at centimetre wavelengths, made with the Arcminute Microkelvin Imager Large Array at a frequency of 16 GHz (λ = 1.8 cm). The source is detected at >6 σrms with an integrated flux density of S16GHz = 249 ± 45 µJy. We use these new centimetre-wave data, in conjunction with additional measurements compiled from the literature, to investigate the long-wavelength tail of the dust emission from this unusual protoplanetary system. We use an MCMC-based method to determine maximum likelihood parameters for a simple parametric spectral model and consider the opacity and mass of the dust contributing to the microwave emission. We derive a dust mass of Md ~ 0.1 Msun, constrain the dimensions of the emitting region and find that the opacity index at λ > 7 mm is less than unity, implying a contribution to the dust population from grains exceeding ~4 cm in size. We suggest that this indicates coagulation within the GG Tau A system has proceeded to the point where dust grains have grown to the size of small rocks with dimensions of a few centimetres. Considering the relatively young age of the GG Tau association in combination with the low derived disc mass, we suggest that this system may provide a useful test case for rapid core accretion planet formation models

    NUCLEAR QUADRUPOLE RESONANCE IN COPPER I COORDINATION COMPOUNDS

    Author Institution: Department of Chemistry, Virginia Polytechnic InstituteNuclear quadrupole resonances for both 63Cu^{63}Cu and 65Cu^{65}Cu have been observed in Cu(etu)2BrCu(etu)_{2}Br, Cu(etu)2ClCu(etu)_{2}Cl and Cu2(etu)4SO4Cu_{2}(etu)_{4} SO_{4}. (etu=ethylene thiourea). The 63Cu^{63}Cu resonances are in the region of 29 33 MHz. Resonances for 79Br^{79}Br and 81Br^{81}Br have been observed in Cu(etu)2BrCu(etu)_{2}Br at 38.824 and 46.588 MHz. All resonances were observed using a noise controlled super-regenerative spectrometer and frequency measurements were made by means of a spectrum analyzer and digital counter. The studies were made at room temperature. The observed magnitude of the Br resonances leads one to conclude that the Br in this compound is essentially ionic. Reported crystal structure analysis on similar type compounds shows that the Cu is generally in a tetrahedral environment of bonded sulfur atoms and anions. Both structural and NQR data regarding compounds is very limited, so one can only generalize regarding the magnitude of the Cu resoances. They do, however, lie close to that reported for KCu(CN)2KCu (CN)_{2}. Both sp2sp^{2} and sp2sp^{2} bonding schemes for the copper atom will be employed to rationalize the changes in frequency with anion substitution. A direct calculation of the electric field gradient tensor components will be discussed and a comparison of the calculated and experimental values will be presented
