A Study on the Relationship between Personality and Driving Styles
Objective: Research on driving behavior and personality traits is a key factor in the development of driver-oriented safety interventions. However, research is fragmented and a multidimensional perspective is lacking. The primary aim of this study is to assess the multiple relationships between driving styles and personality traits using the alternative 5-factor model. A secondary goal is to determine whether these relationships vary by gender and age. Methods: Data were collected from a sample of 908 Argentine drivers. Driving styles were assessed using the Multidimensional Driving Style Inventory. Personality was assessed with the Zuckerman-Kuhlman Personality Questionnaire (ZKPQ-50-CC; Aluja et al. 2006) questionnaire. Results: Different patterns of personality are associated with different driving styles. These relationships appear to be robust with respect to gender and age; however, in some cases these variables did influence the observed relationships. Conclusion: The results provide researchers with a more comprehensive understanding of the relationships between personality traits and driving styles. Practical prevention measures are discussedFil: Poó, Fernando Martín.
población a nivel mundial y a nivel local.
Multidimensional Driving Style Inventory (MDSI) (Taubman – Ben Ari, Mikulincer, &
Argentin
The Mindful Attention Awareness Scale (MAAS) in an Argentine Population
The purpose of this study was to provide evidence of validity for the Mindful Attention Awareness Scale scores in an Argentine sample (Spanish-language version). Results indicated satisfactory psychometric properties (a one-factor structure, good item discrimination, high reliability, and significant correlations with additional measures). This version could be useful for research and assessment ends.Fil: Montes, Silvana Andrea. Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas; Argentina. Newspaper framing of motor vehicle crashes and road safety in Argentina
The media plays a key role in shaping the public’s perception of road safety. This study analyzes the newspaper coverage and framing of motor vehicle crashes (MVCs) and road safety in Argentina, South America. The content of 304 articles published by 15 newspapers in November 2020 was reviewed. The results show that episodically framed news stories (focused on a single event or incident) prevail over thematically framed articles. MVCs are presented primarily as ‘police’ events and tend to receive more coverage when fatalities are involved. There is limited information provided on contextual and risk factors, and road safety advice is rarely included. Speeding, infrastructure, alcohol and other human-related variables are the most cited risk factors. Very few articles mention the use of protective devices (seat-belt, helmet and child restraint system). Although motorcyclists represent 40% of RTC deaths in Argentina, only 20% of the news coverage was about them. News coverage was quite similar in national and regional newspapers. There is an opportunity for the media to help build a better road safety culture, but significant changes in news framing are required. Practical recommendations for editors, journalists and road safety practitioners are provided.Fil: Keller, María Eugenia. No especifíca;Fil: Ledesma, Ruben Daniel. Reliability and validity of a Spanish-language version of the multidimensional driving style inventory
The Multidimensional Driving Style Inventory (MDSI) was originally built and validated in Israel to measure four broad dimensions of driving styles: Reckless, Angry, Anxious, and Careful. This research was designed to adapt and validate a Spanish version of the MDSI for the assessment of driving styles in Argentina, provide evidence for its external validity, and examine its proneness to social desirability responding. Two studies were conducted to fulfill these aims. Study 1 (n = 642) examined the MDSI’s factor structure and internal consistency as well as item properties. It also tested the associations between the MDSI factors, on one hand, and socio-demographic variables and self-reported traffic crashes, on the other. Study 2 (n = 258) examined the relationship between driving styles and personality traits according to Zuckerman’s Alternative Five-Factor Model. In addition, it explored socially desirable responding on the MDSI factors. Results from the two studies present convincing evidence for the validity and reliability of the MDSI, which has emerged as a useful tool for future research with Spanish speaking populations.Fil: Poó, Fernando Martín. Driving anger in Argentina
Angry driving is a risk factor for traffic crashes and injuries, however it has been understudied in Latin American countries. The main aim of the present study was to translate and adapt the short form of the Driving Anger Scale (DAS; Deffenbacher et al., 1994) to the Argentinean Spanish. We also included further situations linked to bad conditions of the road network in Argentina. The sample of the study included 988 Argentinean drivers from the general population. Exploratory and confirmatory analysis supported a five-factor structure which were named as infringements by another driver (α = 0.91), progress impeded (α = 0.77), hostile gestures (α = 0.95), police presence (α = 0.67) and poor road infrastructure (α = 0.84). The DAS in the Argentinean driver's context obtained good psychometric indexes. We also found effects of gender, age, traffic violations and crash involvement on DAS and its subscales. Our findings are valuable as long as they provide information that has not been studied intensively in low and middle-income countries.Fil: Escanés, Gabriel Adrián. Motorcycle helmet use in Mar del Plata, Argentina: prevalence and associated factors
Injuries resulting from motorcycle crashes constitute a growing problem in Argentina and other Latin American countries. The problem is aggravated because helmet use is not widespread. This observational study analysed the prevalence of helmet use and related factors in a city in Argentina. The sample consisted of 2542 observations of motorcyclists. The results show an incidence of helmet use of 69.8% for drives and 43.4% for passengers. Helmet use was greater among women. Environmental and temporal conditions were related with the rate of helmet use. The findings indicate a considerable increase in helmet use with respect to prior years, providing evidence in favour of government policies. However, the number of motorcycles in circulation has tripled in the past five years, and therefore, the public health impact of injuries due to motorcycle crashes persists.Fil: Ledesma, Ruben Daniel. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
