eScience Center Fellowship Programme 2024: Application Form Esther Plomp
Proposal submitted by Esther Plomp on 8 April 2024 for the eScience Center Fellowship Programme 2024.
Summary:
Evaluation of researcher performance is currently a contested subject within academia. Although many researchers contribute to their field of expertise in a multitude of manners, the most stringent criteria of success is the number of research articles published. Subverting the current “publish or perish” culture requires a novel approach to the evaluation of research objects (such as software, data and methods) other than research articles. However, there is currently no standardised way to track such research objects. This project aims to identify and quantify the role of research objects, in particular research software, within the Faculty of Applied Sciences at TU Delft and evaluate how these are being shared within the research community. By monitoring open research objects such as software, the project aims to stimulate an open research culture and incentivise scientists to adhere to Open Science practices and the FAIR principles

Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Application of Padlet-assisted PLOMP Model for Science Learning
In the digital era, the utilization of technology in education is becoming increasingly important. One of the digital tools that can be used is Padlet, a digital board or wall designed specifically for educational purposes. As an innovative digital learning platform, Padlet is an effective tool to promote 21st century learning, including creativity which is essential in this globalized era. PLOMP model is an appropriate strategy to develop Padlet-assisted learning design in science subject. The application of the PLOMP Model to the development of a structured and phased learning design will help achieve learning objectives and improve the quality of education
Data Carpentry: Data Organization in Spreadsheets for Social Scientists
Presentation based on the Data Carpentry lesson materials: Data Organization in Spreadsheets for Social Scientists.
Presentation by Esther Plomp as part of the online Data Carpentry Workshop organised by TU Delft and Leiden University between the 5-8th of July 2021. For more information, please see the workshop website
Exploring the factors that influence grade 8 mathematics achievement in the netherlands, belgium flanders and germany: Results of secondary analysis on TIMSS 1995 data
Since 1964, the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA) has organized several international comparative achievement studies in different core subjects, such as mathematics, science and reading. IEA recognizes two main goals of its achievement studies (Plomp, 1998):1. to provide policy-makers and educational practitioners with information about the quality of their education system in relation to relevant reference systems;2. to assist in understanding the reasons for observed differences between education systems
Data Management Plans: a Data Steward/Researcher Perspective

Presentation for the DTL Data Stewards Interest Group on the 22nd of March 2019 by Esther Plomp on behalf of the Data Steward team at TU Delft. The presentation outlines the Data Stewardship programme at TU Delft, the support available for writing data management plans (DMP) and gives an overview of the feedback from TU Delft researchers on this support, as well as the DMPonline tool. A shortened version of the draft version of the TU Delft DMP template is included at the end of the presentation.

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
Performative architecture as a guide line for transformation of the defence line of Amsterdam
The main topic that is researched in this study is: what performative architecture is and its role in the design process and product. In the scope of performative architecture the aim is to focus what a building does rather than what it is and the fact that architecture should have the capability of being adaptable to changing time, conditions and environment. A design problem is taken under consideration and designed from the scope of performative architecture. The design problem is the transformation of the Defence Line around Amsterdam, designing new buildings with the recent technologies as additions to the forts remaining from 1900’s. A “performative model”, which supports design from the conceptual stage until production of scale prototypes is structured by the author for this specific design problem. This performative model is used as a case study for the research of the role of the computational design tools in the design process and product of performative architecture. In addition to the design process, the role of using computer-aided manufacturing to increase performativity is envisioned and the proceeds of it to the relationship of design and manufacturing are also researched.Computational Design and Fabrication Technologies in ArchitectureArchitectureArchitectur
