Planning the transition of cities. Innovative research approaches and trajectories

    No full text
In light of the ecological, digital, and jus transition envisaged by the EU for reaching the ambitious Green Deal objective by 2050 and its inherent complexity, this paper focused on the nexus between Ecosystem Services and Key Enabling Technologies as a potential and significant element for the future development of promising research trajectories in urban planning. The transition of cities has become a top priority in academic and policy debates, attracting increasing attention from scholars and policymakers. Ecosystem Services are crucial elements for human well-being, and despite their inclusion in urban plans, there are still issues to address requiring innovative research approaches and trajectories to explore for planning the ecological, digital, and transition of cities. Two main elements are explored in this contribution: 1) the centrality of ecosystem services and the potential of related key enabling technologies for the planning of the ecological and digital transition of cities; 2) the current ecosystem services assessment analytical approaches characterized by a spatially explicit perspective presenting relevant implications for the planning dimension. As a result, the paper outlines a research-based conceptual framework aimed at defining promising innovative research approaches for new trajectories to be explored in urban planning

Expanding the spectrum of "mesenchymal" tumors of the central nervous system

    No full text
: In this review, we summarize the clinical, histopathological, and molecular features of central nervous system (CNS) tumors with BCOR internal tandem duplication, intracranial mesenchymal tumor with FET/CREB fusion, CNS CIC-rearranged sarcomas and primary intracranial sarcoma DICER1-mutant, now included in the 2021 WHO classification of CNS tumors. Possible relationships between tumors occurring in the CNS and their systemic counterparts are discussed

In the current political-programmatic context, characterized by the general objective of facilitating the transition toward sustainability and resilience, urban regeneration plays a significant role in addressing the challenges posed by the complexity of transformative processes. This contribution focuses on urban regeneration within the Italian National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR). The objective is to propose an integrated approach that can capture the potential of urban regeneration beyond the specific measures dedicated to it within the PNRR. The proposed methodological approach, with a territorial focus on metropolitan cities, is articulated into three interconnected phases. The first concerns the analysis of the distribution of NRRP funds. The second carries out a preliminary evaluation of the urban regeneration initiatives funded by the NRRP with respect to the indicators of the Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda to evaluate the correspondence and relevance of the interventions in relationship with the context conditions according to the susceptibility to changes for sustainability. The third focuses on the potential connection of specific investments for urban regeneration with the other Missions and the other Investments of the Plan, proposing an integrated approach following the Driving for Urban Transition framework to integrate the NRRP investments in addition to those closely connected to urban regeneration. In conclusion, the contribution highlights the potential of urban regeneration, according to the proposed integrated approach, for the transition of cities towards a sustainable and resilient urban future

A Thermal Analytical Study of LEGO® Bricks for Investigating Light-Stability of ABS

    No full text
Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) is a thermoplastic polymer widely used in several everyday life applications; moreover, it is also one of the most employed plastics in contemporary artworks and design objects. In this study, the chemical and thermal properties of an ABS-based polymer and its photo-degradation process were investigated through a multi-analytical approach based on thermal, mass spectrometric and spectroscopic techniques. LEGO(& REG;) building blocks were selected for studying the ABS properties. First, the composition of unaged LEGO(& REG;) bricks was determined in terms of polymer composition and thermal stability; then, the bricks were subjected to UV-Vis photo-oxidative-accelerated ageing for evaluation of possible degradation processes. The modifications of the chemical and thermal properties were monitored in time by a multi-technique approach aimed at improving the current knowledge of ABS photodegradation, employing pyrolysis online with gas chromatography and evolved gas analysis, coupled with mass spectrometric detection (Py-GC-MS and EGA-MS), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and corroborated by external reflection FT-IR spectroscopy. The multimodal approach provided new evidence on the two-step degradation pathway proposed for ABS, defining molecular markers for polybutadiene oxidation and styrene-acrylonitrile depolymerization. Moreover, the results highlighted the feasibility of correlating accurate compositional and thermal data acquired by bulk techniques with external reflection FT-IR spectroscopy as a non-invasive portable tool to monitor the state of conservation of plastic museum objects in-situ

"The love that made hell, paradise." Ouida re-writing the Paolo and Francesca theme in Held in Bondage

The bestselling Victorian author Ouida reveals in her novels, and, in particular, Held in Bondage, an extraordinary knowledge od Dante, by using characters and themes from the Commedia. The Paolo and Francesca theme actually constitutes part of the plot of the novel and is to be found in many of her other works, short stories and non-fiction writing

Polarity reversal inhibitor for the future meshed HVDC Grids in presence of DC circuit breakers

    No full text
The development of DC circuit breakers (DCCB) will enable the meshed operation of the future HVDC grids. DCCBs are however expected to cause switching overvoltages and polarity reversal during the fault current interruption process. The attendant higher stresses on dielectric materials, especially on solid insulation systems such as cables, terminations and bushings, could in turn hinder the expansion of existing Voltage Source Converters (VSC) based conventional point-to-point dc links, whose components are not tested for polarity reversal in meshed networks. As a consequence, when evaluating the feasibility of introducing HVDC-DCCBs in existing links, those additional stresses must be carefully assessed, since metal-oxide surge arresters mitigate the overvoltage amplitude but cannot address the polarity reversal phenomenon per se. The paper proposes a device called Polarity Reversal Inhibitor (PRI), which includes both passive and power electronic components, aimed at suppressing the polarity reversal and at the same time reducing the overvoltage amplitude, thus mitigating the stresses caused by the introduction of HVDC breakers into dc links
