SYNTHESIS, CHARACTERIZATION AND FUNCTIONALIZATION OF PEDOT CONDUCTING SYSTEMS ON ETHYLENE VINYL ALCOHOL COPOLYMER SUPPORTS AND DERIVATIVES

The research work described in this PhD thesis focuses on methods and strategies of employing a polymer substrate for poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) synthesis. For the purpose an ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymer (EVAL) was chosen. It offers many potentialities. Serving as mechanical support and/or functionalizable phase, it was differently combined with PEDOT to give conducting composite polymer flms or it was modified to obtain electro-active materials. Aim of the work is to show how, starting from the same base, it is possible to introduce functionalities into supported conducting systems both through the substrate and through the conducting phase, and all the strategies that were adopted

Engineered poly(lactic acid)-talc biocomposites for melt processing: Effects of co-blending with poly(butylene succinate) and poly(butylene terephthalate) on thermal and mechanical behavior

    No full text
This article deals with the design and manufacturing of a novel class of PLA-based material specifically engineered for injection molding, suitable for food contact and characterized by a good balance of mechanical properties and thermal resistance. A commercial PLA grade was modified by blending it with microlamellar talc as reinforcing filler, poly(butylene succinate) (PBS), and poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT) as secondary polymeric phases. Ternary blend/talc biocomposites were achieved. The different constituents of the biocomposites were compatibilized by reactive compounding extrusion using maleic anhydride (MAH) grafted PLA (PLA-MA). The thermal properties of the compounds prior and after injection molding were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry. The mechanical response of the injection molded materials was evaluated by flat indentation and flexural tests. The mechanical properties of the PLA/talc-based biocomposites and crystallinity of PLA can be controlled by fine tuning the blend by the addition of PBS and PBT in the formulation. In particular, biocomposites characterized by good strength and toughness can be obtained by injection molding, without affecting thermal stability. Based on the experimental findings, the PLA-based formulations pose; therefore, solid bases for replacing oil-based plastics in several markets, specifically in the segment of food and pharmaceutical packaging. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

A small-bore wire-guided chest tube for the initial stabilisation of septic uroperitoneum in a dog

The purpose of this report was to describe the emergency management and subsequent surgical treatment of a 6-year-old, entire, male Epagneul Breton referred for septic uroperitoneum of 5 days duration. Clinical stabilisation was achieved by the insertion of a percutaneous small-bore wire-guided chest tube as an abdominal drain in association with conventional medical treatment. The small-bore wire-guided chest tube was inserted percutaneously into the abdomen, under ultrasound guidance, using a modified Seldinger technique. It was connected to a closed active collection system, and successfully drained the peritoneal urinary effusion. The medical treatment associated with the application of the small-bore wire-guided chest tube contributed to the patient’s stabilisation, which was reached within 5 hours from arrival, allowing for an exploratory laparotomy with repair of the bladder laceration. The small-bore wire-guided chest tube was replaced during surgery by a Jackson–Pratt drain, which remained in place for 4 days postoperatively. The dog has completely recovered, and no complicationswere recorded

New polyanion template for poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) synthesis

    No full text
The synthesis and characterization of new conducting systems based on poly-(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) and a polyanion, derived from a statistical ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymer (EVAL) and modified by introduction of sulfate groups (EVALS), was investigated. EVALS was used as templating agent for 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT) water suspension and vapor phase (VPP) polymerization. The obtained conductive systems were characterized by elemental analysis, FT-IR spectroscopy, conductivity measurements, scansion electron (SEM) and optical microscopy
