    Niche expansion of polyploid cytotypes shaped the phylogeographical history of the Salix retusa complex in the European Alpine System

    Abstract Background and Aims Alpine plants exhibit diverse postglacial recolonization patterns following the last glacial periods. Polyploidization may have impacted these dynamics by introducing ecological and physiological novelties that facilitate adaptation to changing environments. However, consistent trends in the recolonization, niche optima and dynamics of polyploids and their related diploids remain elusive. In this study, we investigate the biogeographical history of the Salix retusa polyploid complex in the European Alpine System. By comparing genetic patterns and their climatic and edaphic niche optima, we explore how polyploidization shaped species’ geographical distributions by influencing their ecological adaptation. Methods RAD sequencing was used to reconstruct the biogeographical history and genetic structure of two related willow species. High-resolution edaphic and climatic data were used to compare the niche optima, breadth and dynamics between the species. Key Results The distribution of the polyploid species overlaps with more peripheral refugial areas, which correlates with its broader geographical range in the European Alpine System. However, genetic analyses suggest more potential peripheral glacial refugia within the Alps for the diploid. Our findings indicate niche conservatism within the S. retusa complex, with the polyploid species having a broader niche but the diploid being adapted to a more extreme niche. Conclusions In our study species, polyploidy is associated with a higher genetic diversity and geographical structure, which might be due to a broader ecological niche and distribution. However, it did not appear to facilitate adaptation or confer a survival advantage during the last glaciation

    Insights into the Taxonomically Challenging Hexaploid Alpine Shrub Willows of Salix Sections Phylicifoliae and Nigricantes (Salicaceae)

    The complex genomic composition of allopolyploid plants leads to morphologically diverse species. The traditional taxonomical treatment of the medium-sized, hexaploid shrub willows distributed in the Alps is difficult based on their variable morphological characters. In this study, RAD sequencing data, infrared-spectroscopy, and morphometric data are used to analyze the phylogenetic relationships of the hexaploid species of the sections Nigricantes and Phylicifoliae in a phylogenetic framework of 45 Eurasian Salix species. Both sections comprise local endemics as well as widespread species. Based on the molecular data, the described morphological species appeared as monophyletic lineages (except for S. phylicifolia s.str. and S. bicolor, which are intermingled). Both sections Phylicifoliae and Nigricantes are polyphyletic. Infrared-spectroscopy mostly confirmed the differentiation of hexaploid alpine species. The morphometric data confirmed the molecular results and supported the inclusion of S. bicolor into S. phylicifolia s.l., whereas the alpine endemic S. hegetschweileri is distinct and closely related to species of the section Nigricantes. The genomic structure and co-ancestry analyses of the hexaploid species revealed a geographical pattern for widespread S. myrsinifolia, separating the Scandinavian from the alpine populations. The newly described S. kaptarae is tetraploid and is grouped within S. cinerea. Our data reveal that both sections Phylicifoliae and Nigricantes need to be redefined

    Hybridization Resulted in Shifts from Dioecy to Monoecy in Weeping Willows (Salix L.)

    Background/Objectives: In flowering plants, hybridization is an important evolutionary force that might change sex distributions and sex determination systems (SDSs). However, little is known about processes in the first hybrid generations. Here, we study a cultivated putative hybrid cross of weeping willows (genus Salix, S.), S. alba × babylonica to gain insights into the effects of hybridization into SDSs. Methods: We analyzed the genetic structure of pure S. alba, pure S. babylonica, and the putative hybrid crosses in Central Europe using RADSeq data and five independent methods (NeighborNet, genetic structure analysis, Principal Component Analysis, hybrid index and heterozygosity analysis, and hybrid class analysis). The genetic SDS was analyzed on male, female, and mixed (monoecious) phenotypes by detecting sex-specific genomic markers using RADSex. Results: Genetic analyses indicate that most of the weeping willows represent F1 hybrids (S. alba × babylonica), and only two putative S. alba backcrosses. Hybrid index, heterozygosity, and hybrid class analyses provided more interpretable results than the other methods. The parental species were consistently dioecious, whereas hybrids had male, female, and monoecious phenotypes. RADSex revealed a male heterogametic XY system for S. alba, and this was combined in the hybrids with the previously known ZW system of S. babylonica. Conclusions: We confirmed the historical records stating that S. alba × babylonica are mostly F1 hybrids. We report for the first time that the combination of XY and ZW systems in primary hybrids results in regular shifts to monoecy

    In the European Alps, Pleistocene climate oscillations resulted in geographical range expansions and restrictions of species. Postglacial recolonizations often result in secondary contact hybridization of vicariant species, thereby creating hybrid zones with patterns of introgression. Here, we compare the genetic structure of two secondary contact hybrid zones between two vicariant willow species pairs occurring in the European Alpine System.     Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
