A case of pitt-hopkins syndrome with absence of hyperventilation

    No full text
Pitt-Hopkins syndrome is characterized by mental retardation, hyperventilation, and dysmorphic features due to TCF4 mutations. We report a case of Pitt-Hopkins syndrome in a 21-2-year-old boy presenting with psychomotor retardation, recurrent respiratory tract infections, and dysmorphic features with absence of hyperventilation or other breathing abnormalities. Comparative genomic hybridization and quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction were used to confirm TCF4 haploinsufficiency. Pitt-Hopkins syndrome is a rare debilitating disease that should be in the differential diagnosis of other neurodevelopmental disorders characterized by mental retardation and hypotonicity despite the absence of hyperapnea and seizures. Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction is another method to identify TCF4 and to confirm Pitt-Hopkins syndrome diagnosis.Amiel J, 2007, AM J HUM GENET, V80, P988, DOI 10.1086-515582; Brockschmidt A, 2007, HUM MOL GENET, V16, P1488, DOI 10.1093-hmg-ddm099; De Grouchy J., 1969, BIRTH DEFECTS, V5, P74; de Pontual L, 2009, HUM MUTAT, V30, P669, DOI 10.1002-humu.20935; Hasi M, 2011, HUM GENET, V130, P777, DOI 10.1007-s00439-011-1020-y; Kim SK, 2008, CARCINOGENESIS, V29, P1623, DOI 10.1093-carcin-bgn110; Lennertz L, 2011, NEUROPSYCHOBIOLOGY, V63, P131, DOI 10.1159-000317844; Maini I, 2012, J CHILD NEUROL; PITT D, 1978, AUST PAEDIATR J, V14, P182; Taddeucci G, 2010, ITAL J PEDIATR, V36, DOI 10.1186-1824-7288-36-12; Takano K, 2010, CLIN GENET, V78, P282, DOI 10.1111-j.1399-0004.2010.01380.x; Van Balkom IDC, 2012, DEV MED CHILD NEUROL, V54, P925, DOI 10.1111-j.1469-8749.2012.04339.x; Verhulst SL, 2012, AM J MED GENET A, V158A, P932, DOI 10.1002-ajmg.a.35247; Whalen S, 2012, HUM MUTAT, V33, P64, DOI 10.1002-humu.21639; Zweier C, 2009, AM J HUM GENET, V85, P655, DOI 10.1016-j.ajhg.2009.10.004; Zweier C, 2008, J MED GENET, V45, P738, DOI 10.1136-jmg.2008.06012910

Developing A Marketing Recruitment Strategy For International Business

    No full text
Over the last 20 years, recruiting strategies have changed considerably due to the expansion of technology and the Internet. Human resources are also contemplated as the core competitive factor of businesses. This research is conducted to systematize the theoretical basis related to recruitment marketing. Moreover, at various phases, it employs both qualitative and quantitative research approaches. In terms of the empirical component, the owner of the corporate case provided qualitative data. In contrast, quantitative data from possible candidates were reviewed. The theoretical portion gives the audiences a fundamental understanding of recruiting and the use of a recruitment marketing strategy. The author researched some surveys and case studies to gather data from both employees and employers. On the whole, the research findings disclosed the importance of recruitment marketing to international enterprises. Businesses should focus on recruitment marketing to improve recruitment efficiency and reach a bigger pool of potential talents. In the end, the author designated some recommendations for businesses to improve recruitment marketing effectiveness

Long-Term Health-Related Quality of Life after Iatrogenic Bile Duct Injury Repair

BACKGROUND: Data on the effect of bile duct injuries (BDI) on health-related quality of life (HRQOL) are not well defined. We sought to assess long-term HRQOL after BDI repair in a large cohort of patients spanning a 23-year period. STUDY DESIGN: We identified and mailed HRQOL questionnaires to all patients treated for major BDI after laparoscopic cholecystectomy between January 1, 1990 and December 31, 2012 at Johns Hopkins Hospital. RESULTS: We identified 167 patients alive at the time of the study who met the inclusion criteria. Median age at BDI was 42 years (interquartile range 31 to 54 years); the majority of patients were female (n = 131 [78.4%]) and of white race (n = 137 [83.0%]). Most patients had Bismuth level 2 (n = 56 [33.7%]) or Bismuth level 3 (n = 40 [24.1%]) BDI. Surgical repair most commonly involved a Roux-en-Y hepaticojejunostomy (n = 142 [86.1%]). Sixty-two patients (37.1%) responded to the HRQOL questionnaire. Median follow-up was 169 months (interquartile range 125 to 222 months). At the time of BDI, mental health was most affected, with patients commonly reporting a depressed mood (49.2%) or low energy level (40.0%). These symptoms improved significantly after definitive repair (both p 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Mental health concerns were more commonplace vs physical or general health issues among patients with BDI followed long term. Optimal multidisciplinary management of BDI can help restore HRQOL to preinjury levels. (C) 2014 by the American College of Surgeon

Semiometrics: producing a compositional view of influence

    No full text
High-impact academic papers are not necessarily the most cited. For example, Einstein's 'Special Relativity' paper from 1905 received (and continues to receive) fewer citations from other papers than his 'Brownian Motion" paper of the same year, despite the former radically changing the course of an entire scientific discipline to a much greater extent. Similarly, 'impact' metrics using citation count alone are, it is argued, not adequate for determining the scientific influence of papers, authors or small groups of authors. Although valid, they remain controversial when used to determine influence of larger groups or journals. While the term 'impact' has become closely linked to a journal's citation-based Journal Impact Factor score, this thesis uses the term 'influence' to describe the wider effectiveness of research, combining citation and metadata analysis to allow richer calculations to be performed over large-scale document networks. As a result, more qualitative influence ratings can be determined and a broader outlook on scientific disciplines can be produced. These ratings are best applied using an ontology-based data source, allowing more efficient inference than under a traditional RDBMS system, and allowing easier integration between heterogeneous data sources. These metrics, termed 'Semantic Bibliometrics' or 'Semiometrics', can be applied at a variety of levels of granularity, allowing a compositional framework for impact and influence analysis. This thesis describes the process of data preparation, systems architecture, metric value and data integration for such a system, introducing novel approaches at all four stages, thereby creating a working semiometrics system for determining influence at different semantic levels of granularity

Detection of large sequence insertions by a hybrid approach that combine de novo assembly and resequencing of medium-coverage genome sequences

    No full text
Large sequence insertion (LSI) is one of the structural variations (SVs) that may cause phenotypic differences in plants. To identify the LSIs using medium-coverage sequencing data of four wild soybean (Glycine soja) genotypes, we designed a hybrid approach combining de novo assembly and read mapping. Total reads and reads with both ends unmapped were independently assembled into “ordinary contigs” and “orphan contigs”, respectively, and subjected to pairwise alignment and stringent filtering. This approach predicted 24 LSIs averaging 2,682 bp in size, with no overlap with SVs detected by Pindel, BreakDancer, or ScanIndel, and they were validated by PCR. Compared with the soybean (Glycine max) reference genome, 20 LSIs were located outside genic regions. One of the four LSIs within a genic region, LSI05, is located in the coding DNA sequence region of a protein kinase superfamily gene (Glyma.08G123500). It caused delayed translation initiation and loss of 24 amino acids in the wild soybean genotype CW12. LSI05 was more frequently observed in 29 G. soja accessions than in 34 G. max accessions. Identified LSIs would be genomic resources harboring novel gene contents for studying SVs and improving crops. Moreover, our cost-efficient approach may be applicable to other plant species. The accepted manuscript in pdf format is listed with the files at the bottom of this page.
