PERCHE' LE PERSONE SI IMPEGNANO NELL'AZIONE COLLETTIVA? UNO STUDIO MULTI-METODO PER ESPLORARE IL PUNTO DI VISTA DEGLI ATTIVISTI ITALIANI

    No full text
The literature studying why people engage in collective action shows two main limitations: 1) the use of a top-down, researcher-centered research approach and 2) the lack of active involvement of people from a participatory, co-constructed perspective. This shows the need to apply a bottom-up approach with the active involvement of activists. The present work is a concurrent multi-method qualitative research design in which two research methodologies were combined: constructivist Grounded Theory (Study 1) and Concept Mapping (Study 2), starting from the research question: what are the motivations that lead activists today to engage in collective action? Study 1 highlighted, through individual semi-structured interviews, the processual components that lead people to engage in collective action. Study 2, through a focus on the activist community and through a participatory approach, uncovered the motivations that lead activists to engage and how to incentivize this engagement. Results suggest how scholars and professionals can no longer study and work in the collective action context only from the individual acting in a group point of view, but instead should involve community work: in the context, in the associations and with people who are part of it

Collective action, protest, and Covid-19 restrictions: Offline and online community participation in Italy and Australia

    No full text
Public health restrictions during the Covid-19 emergency context placed limits on gathering that inevitably limited the ways that people could express dissent. The target of many protests has included the limitations placed by governments on the rights to have mass, public protests. Despite the physical limits on street protests the use of online methods to promote support for protest has increased in this context. People turned to online methods (petitions, confrontations, and discussions) and engaged in other forms of direct disruptive action to express their views about how the world should be. These observations demand a closer examination of the changing nature of collective action during the pandemic. The aim of the chapter is to study the relation between the type of collective action (offline vs. online) and the process of mobilisation for social change during the Covid-19 pandemic, comparing Italy and Australia. Two integrated models have been tested: The Social Identity Model of Collective Action, and the Encapsulation Model of the Social Identity of Collective Action. Results showed online collective action as a future way to engage, because of its “simple” and immediate way to make one’s voice heard when everyone’s rights and liberties seem to be endangered

Psychology’s growing interest in the study of the various ways through which people engagé in the social context, led to the need of a field of studies called «psychology of participation». This paper aims to propose a systematization of the literature focusing on different «forms of participation», such as social action, volunteerism, and collective action, concluding with a summary schema that shows the relationships that exist between the different forms of action presented

Fighting for Human Rights: Collective Action by Actual and Potential Activists

Studying collective action with activists is increasingly important due to the large number of social movements fighting for human rights. Many studies are only partly conducted with actual activists and studying both actual and potential activists is important to understand how to foster people's engagement. This research aimed to test two different models of Collective Action (Social Identity Model of Collective Action and the Encapsulation Model of Social Identity in Collective Action) to better understand how models work using two different samples: 1) a group of activists who were already participating in a protest at the time (N = 155), and 2) a group of potential activists (N = 232). A questionnaire evaluating Social Identification, Moral Outrage and Collective Efficacy was administered. Results show the Encapsulation Model of Social Identity in Collective Action as the model that better explains relationships between variables in both samples. The "efficacy path" is shown as the better way to make people engaged. The discussion highlights the meaningful relevance of the findings for the future understanding and conceptualization of activism in order to develop effective recruitment campaigns

Generation and Gender Differences in Family Businesses: A New Psychological Perspective

    No full text
Family businesses (FBs) are a particular type of organization where both family and business dimensions intertwine. In FB literature, family firms have been studied both from a personal and an organizational point of view. In this paper, we present a new psychological approach aimed at capturing intergenerational and gender-matching differences in 67 generational pairs of entrepreneurs from Italian family firms based on 16 implicit theories. These 16 implicit theories are grouped into three psychological processes. Considering the differences across generations and between same- and cross-gender pairs of entrepreneurs, paired samples t-tests highlighted processes where FB entrepreneurs differ the most. Results from same- and cross-gender pairs analyses create a complex picture that applies when considering intergenerational differences that are a key to planning ad hoc consultations for families and their companies. Educators, researchers and consultants working with FBs may find this study interesting for two reasons. They would learn about the implicit theories that guide the attitudes, emotions, and behaviours of entrepreneurs and they could use this knowledge to work with different generations of entrepreneurs, including same- or mixed-gender pairs of seniors and juniors, during the succession process

(Dis)Obedience in U.S. American Young Adults: A New Way to Describe Authority Relationships

    No full text
The present research aims to investigate the psychosocial phenomena of obedience and disobedience in young adults residing in the United States, as a replication of a previous study by Pozzi, Fattori, Bocchiaro, and Alfieri (2014). We utilize social representation theory as a means to better understand and define (dis)obedience, a behavioral dimension of the concept of authority. The analysis was conducted using a concurrent mixed methods design. One hundred and fifty-one participants completed a self-report online questionnaire. The results indicate that participants see both obedience and disobedience as related to an authority. Obedience was mostly perceived as an ability to be responsive to laws, social norms, or physical authorities, as well as a positive social object. Disobedience, instead, was defined as a failure of a negative line of conduct. These results differ from previous research, contributing meaningfully and pragmatically to the theoretical debate on (dis)obedience. Theoretical and practical implications of these findings are discussed
