Effect of Turmeric (Curcuma longa L.) Powder as Dietary Antioxidant Supplementation on Pig Meat Quality
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of dietary Curcuma longa powder on pig meat quality and shelf-life. Eighteen pigs (Cinta Senese breed) were fed with two different diets: basal diet (control, C) and basal diet supplemented with 4.5g/pig/day of turmeric powder (Tu). After slaughter meat quality was assessed during 7 days of storage at 4C. pH, color, drip loss, cooking loss, tenderness, lipid oxidation and antioxidant capacity were determined at day 0 and 7 on raw samples. Dietary turmeric powder induced reductions in a* and b* indexes and in Chroma. Lipid oxidation was lower in meat from Tu diet than C diet (P<0.05). The C. longa powder supplementation did not affect pH, drip loss, cook loss, tenderness, L* and antioxidant capacity (P>0.05). Turmeric powder could thus be a potential supplementation in diet of pigs for increasing meat quality. Practical Applications: Recently, purchasers and producers pay much attention on meat quality. Autochthonous pig breeds, like Cinta Senese, are known for their high meat quality and are sought after by consumers. Natural feed supplementation appears to be a viable management operation to improve the quality and stability of the meat. Turmeric is one of the most popular spice used around the world and it is studied for its antioxidant power. Gastrointestinal parasitoids represents a common problem associated with ovine breeding.
Nowadays only old and potentially harmful pharmacological therapies are available in order to control this disease in animal, leading to a need of an alternative and more reliable approach to solve this problem. Our study is aimed to screen the actual local ovine population in order to select the healthy animal and narrowing the pharmacological treatment only where necessary.
The study was carried out in an organic Massese’s flock and was focused on the parasite burden monitoring and the control of animal resilience. Faecal (for FEC) and blood samples (for haematocrit) were collected twice a month on 84 ewes during 14 months.
Our results could be profitably used in development of local healthy breeds, avoiding pharmacological treatments in accordance with a more eco-compatible productive systems
An open-field study comparing an essential oil-based shampoo with miconazole/chlorhexidine for hair coat disinfection in cats with spontaneous microsporiasis
Objectives The goal of the present study was to compare the antifungal efficacy of an essential oil (EO) shampoo proven to be effective against Microsporum canis with miconazole/chlorhexidine for topical hair coat disinfection in cats treated concurrently with oral itraconazole.
Methods Cats received treatment with oral itraconazole (Itrafungol) at a dose of 5 mg/kg/day pulse administration for 1 week, every 2 weeks for at least 6 weeks and were washed twice a week with a neutral shampoo with added EOs of Thymus serpyllum (2%), Origanum vulgare and Rosmarinus officinalis (5% each) for the period of systemic treatment. This protocol was compared with a conventional treatment (oral itraconazole + 2% miconazole/2% chlorhexidine shampoo).
Results The treatment was well tolerated and adverse effects were not recorded. All cats were clinically negative at week 11. With respect to animals with extensive lesions, the speed of resolution was higher in cats with focal lesions. The animals showing diffuse lesions required more than a course of treatment to achieve a mycological cure. There was no significant difference between the number of weeks to obtain mycological cure for cats treated with EOs and animals treated conventionally.
Conclusions and relevance The treatment appeared to be effective and well appreciated by the owners. The use of shampoo with the added EOs of T serpyllum, O vulgare and R officinalis would seem an interesting, natural alternative to conventional topical treatment
In Vitro Activity of Twenty Commercially Available, Plant-Derived Essential Oils against Selected Dermatophyte Species
The in vitro activity of twenty chemically defined essential oils (EOs) obtained from Boswellia sacra, Citrus bergamia, C. limon, C. medica, Cinnamomum zeylanicum, Eucalyptus globulus, Foeniculum vulgare, Helichrysum italicum, Illicium verum, Litsea cubeba, Mentha spicata, Myrtus communis, Ocimum basilicum, Origanum majorana, O. vulgare, Pelargonium graveolens, Rosmarinus officinalis, Santalum album, Satureja montana, and Thymus serpyllum was assayed against clinical animal isolates of Microsporum canis, Trichophyton mentagrophytes, T. erinacei, T. terrestre and Microsporum gypseum, main causative agents of zoonotic and/or environmental dermatophytoses in humans. Single main components present in high amounts in such EOs were also tested. Different dermatophyte species showed remarkable differences in sensitivity. In general, more effective EOs were T. serpyllum (MIC range 0.025%-0.25%), O. vulgare (MIC range 0.025%-0.5%) and L. cubeba (MIC range 0.025%-1.5%). F. vulgare showed a moderate efficacy against geophilic species such as M. gypseum and T. terrestre. Among single main components tested, neral was the most active (MIC and MFC values ≤ 0.25%). The results of the present study seem to be promising for an in vivo use of some assayed EOs
Strongyle monitoring in a flock of the native Zerasca sheep breed
Gastrointestinal parasites compromise the welfare and health of ruminants on pasture, causing serious productive losses. The constant and preventive strategy of anthelmintic treatments results in several problems, such as parasite resistance and food and environment contamination. Sustainable approaches to tackle such problems primarily involve knowledge of the dynamics and impact of parasites in the flock. The aim of this study was to monitor the gastrointestinal parasite burden together with the body condition score (BCS) in a flock of a local Italian sheep breed. The two-year study involved an unchanged sample of 20 pluriparous ewes randomly selected in a farm located in the homonymous area. Chemical anthelmintic treatment had been administered three months before the beginning of the study, following a mean infestation level of 298±276.5 eggs per gram (EPG). Faecal samples were collected every two months to evaluate the faecal egg count (FEC) with a modified McMaster technique. Egg dynamics were statistically analysed and data were logarithmically transformed to normalize the variance. FEC results were grouped into four levels of infection for a statistical description. The BCS was measured on a five-point scale. Results showed a significant fluctuation in FEC (from 52 to 320 EPG), however no clear relationship with the season was found. Mean values were always under the threshold of health risk and only in one case did values exceed 300 EPG. The overall BCS was nearly 3, thus revealing no nutritional problems. The study highlighted that by monitoring gastrointestinal strongyles in a farm with good farming practices, chemical treatments can be limited to only those cases that are strictly necessary
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.
