Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    Get PDF
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

The present masters thesis describes the functionality and usefulness of the system in regards to the information needs of students. The thesis is focused only on the information system VIS at the Faculty of Arts, University of Ljubljana. Two research methods have been used, an expert study and an online survey. In the expert study, a part of the VIS accessible to and intended only for undergraduate and postgraduate students has been addressed. In the online survey, the aim was to determine whether students have problems with using the system VIS and if they deem it suitable for their needs. Results of the online survey showe that 91% of students do not experiance major problems with the system, thus showing that the system is suitable for them. The expert study results show that the system does not meet all the criteria for a good user interface. The findings of the present thesis may help designers mentain and improve the systemmost improvements can be made when it comes to its appearance. The results only point towards the basic aspects of the system, so it would be sensible to carry out a broader survey to obtein more detailed results. It would also be beneficial to investigate the individual parts of the system or to compare several different systems in Slovenia with one other

Skušali smo razumeti, kako študentje uporabljajo knjižnični prostor CTK in kakšna so mnenja študentov o knjižničnem prostoru. Z anketnim vprašalnikom in metodo opazovanja smo zbrali kvantitativne in kvalitativne podatke v dveh različnih obdobjih obiska knjižnice. The library space is part of the library that retains its own meaning today. With an increase of remote access and use of electronic resources, libraries can offer their services even without the user entering the library building itself. If we want to understand the use of space, we need to understand its users, who are a key element of any library. Understanding these, leads us to a better direction of the development of the library itself. In our thesis, we considered the library space of the Central Technical Library at the Universtity of Ljubljana from the point of view of its most frequent users, the students. We tried to understand how students use the CTK library space and what students\u27 opinions are about the library space. Using a survey questionnaire and observation method, we collected quantitative and qualitative data in two different periods of the library visits. The first period was the pre-exam period that took place in the first two weeks of May, the second period was the exam period that took place in the first two weeks of June. The findings showed mostly similarities and some discrepancies in the use and opinion of students in both periods. It turned out that students visit the library and use the library space primarily for study purposes. The functionality of the library is of great importance to students. The students highlighted the lack of space as the biggest drawback of the library space. The findings will only strenghten the understanding of the use of the space and add to further additions and changes in the development of the space and maintain the created open and innovative learning community of students

The evaluation of library collections is crucial for their development. The purpose of this evaluation was to determine to what extent is the Geography collection in the Oton Župančič Library suitable for students studying Geography at the Faculty of Arts in Ljubljana. It was carried out by comparing existing collection to the reference list. After list-checking was done, we came to the final result that the Geography collection contains less than 30 % of study materials from the list. The percentage is quite small, which should indicate a less suitable collection for students. Such a result was partly expected since the collection is not primarily intended for students/researchers. The percentage depends on several factorschanging the factors could potentially change the outcome. We also decided to compare the list with the Geography collection of the Central Humanities Library. Even that collection does not contain all the material from the list, which suggests that even the exemplar library does not contain all the relevant material, and a better assessment of the quality of the collection in Oton Župančič Library can only be determined by a more detailed examination of the content of the material and its use

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    Get PDF
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

Namen raziskave je bil ugotoviti odnos pedagoški delavcev do Osrednje humanistične knjižnice Filozofske fakultete Univerze v Ljubljani (OHK FF) in kakšna so njihova pričakovanja glede OHK FF v prihodnosti. Nekateri so s trenutno ureditvijo knjižnice zadovoljni, medtem ko si drugi želijo skupne in sodobnejše knjižnice. The emergence of the internet and the advances in information and communication technology have brought changes to roles of academic libraries and the needs of their increasingly demanding users. The purpose of this study was to investigate the faculty attitude towards The Central Humanities Library at Faculty of Arts, University of Ljubljana (CHL) and their expectation of the CHL in the future. The survey was conducted between June and July 2019 using a web survey. We found that the CHL is still widely used among the faculty members despite digital resources. They are generally satisfied with the library, the most with library staff and the least with the reading rooms. Electronic databases (either on-site or through remote access), up-to-date library collections and open access shelving were perceived by faculty members as the most important features of academic libraries. Our research also confirmed the previous findings that humanists have a special attitude toward printed sources and consider the archival role of the library important. Just over one half of those surveyed agreed that it is necessary for the CHL to keep printed versions of those scientific journals, which are also available electronically. Opinions on the current organization of the library in several smaller departmental libraries are twofold. Some are satisfied with the current library organization, while others expressed the desire for a joint and modern library. The faculty’s expectations for the CHL in the future are, among other things, that library should provide more space, both for library holdings and users

Magistrsko delo obravnava poznavanje in uporabo knjižničnih informacijskih virov med študenti prvih letnikov dodiplomskega študija Univerze v Ljubljani. Uvodoma naloga predstavlja značilnosti t.i. Google generacije, predvsem informacijsko vedenje njenih predstavnikov. This thesis deals with the use and expertise of library information sources among first year undergraduate students of University of Ljubljana, Slovenia. It is introduced with the presentation of the so called Google generation. Mostly it is focused on information behavior of its members. Moving from the general characteristics it then centers on undergraduate students as one of the user groups of Google generation. What follows is a detailed analysis of the informational behavior of first year undergraduate students: a display of actual condition of informational literacy among them, a description of ways in which undergraduate students gain and use information, a short illustration of the relation between students and physical library as well as the impact that the use of library has on their academic success. Based on relevant literature a survey was conducted in which 70 students participated: 35 from the Faculty of Arts and 35 from the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Engineering. The research was focused on students% informational behavior and was trying to determine the level of information literacy among them. The researched method used was a survey questionnaire distributed both personally to interested students and electronically via faculty library web sites. However, only the minority of data was gathered electronically. The research was based on two research questions and two hypotheses. The results confirmed the expectations that students do use internet as the most common information source when they need information for their study. The internet is also the most common source that is used first in order to fulfill students% information needs. Among listed special information sources the most known and used one is Cobiss. The results also showed that students% input in information gaining is moderate and that they think they got enough guidance about information gaining, information sources and similar, when they entered university. Beside other data we also wanted to find out whether students from different disciplines have obviously different informational behavior. For this purposes the survey was conducted at two disciplinary different faculties. The results didn%t show any bigger deviations between the two. The final impression is that first year undergraduate students involved have average information knowledge which can be a good foundation for further upgrade of their information literacy
