Desenho integrado e desenho autónomo na obra de Luís Filipe de Abreu

    No full text
The main objective of this research is to present and explain Drawing by Luís Filipe de Abreu, in the dual aspect of autonomous drawing and integrated drawing, both of which form the basis of all his work. In addition to a comprehensive knowledge of the graphic work, reference is also made to the founding concepts of its creation and the way in which they manifest themselves in the different genres of artistic expression in which drawing is integrated. The problematic of the work involves issues related to the teaching of Visual Form and Composition, as well as the creative imagination associated with the singularity of graphic language. Ascending and Descending Geometrization are two concepts that run through the whole operating methodology of this author, along with the intentionality of colour and conceptual freedom, which translates into different trends and formulations of the drawings, denser or more stripped down, more pictorial or more graphic, more gestural or more accurate. These contents are dealt with transversally in the three main chapters: conceptuality, technical-operational means and the representation of the real thing. The study of drawing, in the various areas presented, follows a historical and aesthetic framework, reflecting the cultural and artistic context of this artist's work, which includes various fields of graphic arts, studied and analysed in this work, namely literary, advertising and fiduciary illustration. The presence of drawing in medals, tapestries and tile panels is also discussed. This research includes pieces from the author's private collection, namely, intimate drawings in notebooks, maquettes and several studie

Evidencing the "robot phase transition" in experimental human-algorithmic markets

Johnson, Zhao, Hunsader, Meng, Ravindar, Carran, and Tivnan (2012) recently suggested the existence of a phase transition in the dynamics of financial markets in which there is free interaction between human traders and algorithmic trading systems ("robots"). Above a particular time-threshold, humans and robots trade with one another; below the threshold all transactions are robot-to-robot. We refer to this abrupt system transition as the "robot phase transition". Here, we conduct controlled experiments where human traders interact with 'robot' trading agents in minimal models of electronic financial markets to see if correlates of the two regimes suggested by Johnson et al. (2012) occur in such laboratory conditions. Our results indicate that when trading robots act on a super-human timescale, the market starts to fragment, with statistically lower human-robot interactions than we would expect from a fully mixed market. We tentatively conclude that this is the first empirical evidence for the robot phase transition occurring under controlled experimental conditions

Interview with Minas Gerais writer Filipe Lutalo, author of Almoço de domingo (Sunday Lunch). This prose work, featuring paratexts by social historian Josemeire Alves and writer Cidinha da Silva, presents narratives in which the unifying element is human relationships. These stories foreground everyday experiences and the sharing of affections. Composed with the skill of a master prose stylist and a profound poetic quality — hallmarks of the potency of Afro-Brazilian literary production — these narratives render daily life, often through intergenerational interactions, to reveal the emergence of memories in the process of construction and the connections that make them possible. This conversation engaged with the author’s understandings of literature, his approaches to literary creation, and his writing projects.

George H. Mead: A Therapy for the Malaise of Modernity? In his recent volume on Mead, Filipe Carreira da Silva proposes an interpretation of the pragmatist’s thought that develops through three fundamental points of reference. According to the author, science, selfhood and democratic politics constitute “the pillars” of a new approach to the problem of modernity; an approach in which the mutual interchange between these moments projects on the theoretical level a reflection of the relational ..

Tese de mestrado, Desenho, Universidade de Lisboa, Faculdade de Belas Artes, 2012Since the Portuguese Escudo banknotes appeared, in 1910 with the Implantation of the Republic– issued by the Portuguese Central Bank –, until they were replaced in 2002 by the Euro, they have undergone huge changes, both regarding the evolution of the safety rules, of the production technical means and their artistic design. This work aims at shedding light on the process of making an Escudo banknote, which has always been involved in major secrecy. Hereby we try to understand the paper currency as a means of production and transmission of images and concepts linked to the visual culture of its time. This essay focuses on approaching the evolution of the design of the Escudo banknotes that has had the contribution of Portuguese plastic artists, the last one having been Luís Filipe de Abreu, as subsequently the Portuguese State adhered to the Euro. We will start by analysing the first Escudo banknotes partly designed by the engravers of the Portuguese Central Bank. We will subsequently analyse the work of João de Sousa Araújo, who was the first to change the design of this banknotes, and finally we will analyse the “author banknotes” drawing by Luís Filipe de Abreu, who totally revolutionised what had been done in Portugal until then. With this work we try to broadly research, collect, gather and analyse, both in depth and individually, the whole process of producing a fiduciary note in order to better understand the importance of the great innovative work of Luís Filipe de Abreu, highlighting in the process the role and quality of drawing, as a mean of investigatio

Teatro português em Marrocos no tempo de Filipe II : o testemunho do Cancioneiro de D. Maria Henriques

    No full text
The author studies the drama production by D. Francisco da Costa, Portuguese ambassador to Morocco, first under the rule of Cardinal D. Henrique (1579-1580) and later under the rule of Filipe II (1590-1591). This study also incorporates D. Francisco da Costa’s drama production in the literary context of “the so called Cancioneiro de D. Maria Henriques” and in the historical and cultural framework of that period. This research work pays especial attention to its similarities with the chronicles narrating the aspects and conditions of the Portuguese captive in Morocco after the Battle of Alcácer Quibir
