DESIGN RE-ACTION. Da Officina Elettrica a Museo del Design: il nuovo polo culturale della collezione ADI - Compasso d’Oro a Milano.

This paper analyses the regeneration process of an urban complex in Milan that now houses a museum dedicated to industrial design. The space, subject to progressive transformations in use—from a horse-drawn omnibus depot to an Edison power plant—represents an emblematic example of an urban palimpsest intertwining two centuries of productive and cultural history. After a long period of neglect in the late 20th century, the area was reclaimed through a museum project that enhances the large industrial spans by hosting the permanent collection of the Compasso d'Oro, the oldest international design award, which saw its “cradle” in industry. Through research conducted on unpublished archival sources, the study investigates strategies for repurposing abandoned production spaces and their conversion into places of design culture. This project reveals principles that are useful for understanding the role that contemporary museography can play in restoring meaning and function to former industrial contexts, helping to redefine the relationship between the memory of work and cultural production

Was There a Quiet Revolution? Belarus After the 2006 Presidential Election

    No full text
The 2006 presidential election in Belarus mobilized a large cross-section of society to protest against the Lukashenko regime. Although unprecedented, the mass mobilization was short-lived, failing to develop into another kind of coloured revolution in the region. The key to our understanding of the endurance of Lukashenko's regime seems to lie in its internal environment, and notably, in the seemingly contradictory feature of the Belarusian electorate. Not only do they fully identify with the president, thus effectively legitimizing his politics and policies; they also do so knowingly, through their strategic learning of how to survive and even thrive under Lukashenko's regime. This type of learning, however, may not necessarily lead to a critical reflection of the regime's malpractice, and thus is unlikely to challenge its foundations

Fine-needle aspiration cytology of thyroid nodule: does the needle matter?

    No full text
OBJECTIVES: Ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration cytology (US-FNAC) represents the most effective test available to distinguish between benign and malignant thyroid nodules. The major limit is the rate of inadequate specimens which generates a much higher cost. The aim of the present study was to evaluate whether the adoption of stylet needles may result in a significant improvement of diagnostic performance in a large, unselected series of nodules. METHODS: 1468 nodules were submitted to US-FNAC by two different 25-gauge needles: a traditional hollow needle (Ns) or a stylet needle (Ys). Cytological specimens were evaluated in blind conditions by the same cytopathologist. RESULTS: Ys was associated to a significant reduction of non-diagnostic specimens (2.8% vs 9.1% by Ns, respectively, P < 0.001). Logistic regression analysis taking into account sex, age, needle type, nodule size, multiplicity and structure predictor of successful sampling [odds ratio 3.6 (95.0% CN 2.0-6.4), P < 0.001]. The cost analysis comparing the adoption of the two types of needle evidenced that the cost per adequate specimen was consistently less for Ys than for Ns (euro 78.87 vs euro 90.76). CONCLUSION: Our data showed that the adoption of a stylet needle significantly improves diagnostic performance, reducing by about 14% the expenditure per diagnostic procedure. Therefore, we suggest that stylet needles should be widely adopted to perform US-FNAC of thyroid procedures
