    No full text
This preface introduces 16 dialogues or fragments of dialogue composed by Leibniz, edited and translated in 2007 by several scholars under Francesco Piro's direction. In his Preface, Piro explains the reasons of Leibniz's involvement with the "art of composing dialogues", connecting this involvement with Leibniz's epistemological "perspectivism" and with his virtualist interpretation of the Doctrine of Innate Ideas. Moreover, the preface discusses Leibniz's first attempts of Theodicy, his way to monadology, and other sides of Leibniz's philosophy which can be more clearly understood through his dialogues. Piro's Preface is followed by an Introduction to each dialogue composed by the editors/translaters of the single works: the Introduction to the dialogues 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9 and 14-15 are even by Piro

Altamore, Istituto Astronomico, Rome, telex: "We detected x-ray emission from the high-velocity symbiotic star AG Dra at minimum phase. The star was observed with EXOSAT on June 5. Using a bremsstrahlung model with log nH = 20.2, we find kT = 24 eV and a 0.2-1.0-keV flux of 3.4 x 10**-16 J m**-2 s**-1. Coordinated IUE observations on June 9 showed an ultraviolet spectrum typical of minimum phase. There was no ultraviolet contamination of EXOSAT fluxes. The fine-error-sensor magnitude was 9.8. Infrared photometry on May 2 and 23 gave: J = 7.12, H = 6.36, K = 6.27, confirming that the K star is substantially stable.

Introduction. The Sabine Necropolis at Colle del Forno (700-300 B.C.) at Montelibretti, Rome is characterized by dromos chamber tombs, most of them unexplored till now. The tombs can be assimilated to cavities of a standard volume of some cubic meters; the entrance of the tombs is a corridor 6 m long with a 1 square meter section . The surficial geology of the area consists of a series of tuffs about 10 m thick overlying Pleistocene-Quaternary sandy-clayey sediments. A thin layer of top soil (20 - 30 cm) covers the tuff. The investigation of the Necropolis in the past decade has been performed by different geophysical methodologies: electrical, electromagnetic and magnetic methods have been widely adopted to investigate several chamber tombs (Piro et al, 2001). The aim of this paper is to analyze an integrated approach to the processing of magnetic survey data. The magnetic susceptibility contrast between topsoil, subsoil and rocks (topsoil is normally more magnetic than subsoil) permits to detect ditches, pits and other silted-up features that were excavated and then silted or back-filled with topsoil. Meanwhile back-filled areas produce positive anomalies, less magnetic material introduced into topsoil, including many kinds of masonry (for example, limestone walls) may produce negative anomalies of the order of some nanoteslas. The same behavior is related to the presence of cultural voids and tombs whose magnetic anomaly is generated by the lack of magnetic materials due to the cavities of the tombs. In the area a diffused magnetisation is manly due to the presence of top soil and tuff materials and high negative susceptibility contrasts can be expected because of the presence of the tombs. The magnetic survey was performed along a regular grid of 0.5 m x 0.5 m using a optical pumped Caesium-vapour magnetometer G858 (Geometrics), in the gradient configuration, on an area which is well known as far as the presence, size and position of tombs are concerne

Cum maxime unusquisque homo suum utile quaerit, tum maxime homines sunt sibi invicem utiles. Note su Ethica IV, prop. 35 e corollari

The paper concerns the crucial categories of the fourth part of Spinoza's Ethica. In the opinion of the author, Spinoza's definition of "utility" and, more widely, his views on practical reason are quite original and based on the ontological notion of "convenance" (convenientia) which is not easy to reduce to the classical ends/means view of utility. In the opinion of the author, Spinoza is trying to ground a crucial point of Ethics, part IV: only a person which is useful to herself can be really useful even for me

Gamma-ray burst: from the central engine to future observations with athena

Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) are among the most luminous and distant sources in the Universe. In the 33% of the GRBs afterglow light curves is observed the presence of one or multiple X-ray flares, which energy ranges from a percent of, up to a value comparable to, the one of prompt emission. X-ray flare are believed to mark the late-time activity of the central engine. The temporal properties of X-ray flares make it difficult to interpret the observed emission in the framework of the external shock scenario. The comprehension of the X-ray flare origin enables to obtain information about the central engine that cannot be directly observed, indeed the first signal detection, due to the prompt emission, occurs at high distances from the central engine it- self. The guideline will be the study of the time variability of the flares observed with XRT instrument on board of the Swift satellite. After that the results from the XRT data analysis will be compared with observations of the prompt events made by the BAT instrument. This will allow to link prompt emission variability with the eventual flares ones. In fact the prompt emission has an high variability with time and if the same variability is confirmed by both BAT and XRT data, it will be a strong proof that X-ray flares are connected with the residual activity of the central engine, and a confirm of the current theoretical model for X-ray flares. The Athena observatory class mission will address the study of GRBs in the X-ray band, allowing the diagnostic of the metal content around the central engine, will answer the open problem of X-ray flares origin at very high redshifts, and finally will address for the first time the detection and characterization of the WHIM. In this regard it is vital for the implementation of the observations to analyze and optimize the performances of the instruments in terms of background and spectroscopy. Therefore the second part of this work is addressed to the study how the performances of the X-IFU instrument could be affected during a Solar Energetic Particle event (SEP

Оптимизация интенсивной терапии сепсиса на основе клинико-статистической модели PIRO

Objective: to develop a variant of the clinicostatistical model PIRO, by making retrospective and prospective analyses of cases of sepsis, severe sepsis, and septic shock, to carry out its clinical trial, and to estimate its prognostic value and expert capacities. Subjects and methods. Critically ill patients with multiple organ dysfunctions, who had signs of an active systemic inflammatory response by the ACCP/SCCM criteria (1992), the severity of the underlying condition of an APACHE II Score of 10 or more, and manifestations of multiple organ dysfunctions by the SOFA scale, were enrolled for the study. Among them, the men and women were 69 and 57%, respectively; their mean age was 42.0±1.6 years. While developing a variant of the PIRO model, the authors determined the domains of its parameters as values in the presence of these or those signs of premorbidity (Charlson Comorbidity Index, 1987), infection (the classification worked out by R. A. Weinstein in 2001 and modified by the author), a systemic response to infection (the classical signs of SIRD and the diagnostic markers of sepsis, proposed by M. M. Levy et al. (SSC), multiple organ dysfunctions/failures (SOFA scale) in a specific patient. Results. The data given in the present paper suggest that the use of the new diagnostic markers of sepsis in addition to the classical criteria of SIRS allowed its diagnosis to be made in the highly specific fashion; the PIRO model variant designed by the authors has heuristic, predictive, and expert capacities; it made it possible to reliably determine the outcome of the disease at an early stages of sepsis, by using the basic parameters affecting the progression and outcome of the disease and to establish that the patients who had experienced a septic episode had persistent organ dysfunction, more severe premorbid state, and poorer quality of life. Conclusion. The application of the PIRO model makes it possible not only to choose a timely and full intensive therapy strategy, but also to prevent the progression of persistent organ dysfunction/failure after a sustained septic episode. Key words: sepsis, multiple organ dysfunction, PIRO system. Rab7 and the CMT2b disease

The CMT2B (Charcot-Marie-Tooth type 2B) disease is an autosomal dominant axonal neuropathy. Sensory loss, distal muscle weakness and wasting, frequent foot ulcers and amputations of the toes due to frequent infections characterize this neuropathy. Four missense mutations in the rab7 gene have been identified as causative of the disease. Rab7 is a small G-protein of the Rab family that controls vesicular transport to late endosomes and lysosomes in the endocytic pathway. The CMT2B-associated mutant Rab7 proteins show altered nucleotide dissociation rates and impaired GTPase activity. In addition, these mutant proteins are predominantly in the GTP-bound form when expressed in human cells and they are able to rescue Rab7 function in Rab7-depleted cells. Thus these mutations generate activated forms of Rab7 that are responsible for the development of the disease. In spite of these results, there are still important gaps in our understanding of the mechanism underlying CMT2B. Indeed, how these mutations in the rab7 gene affect specifically peripheral neurons leading to an axonal pathology in CMT2B is not clear, and it is a particularly puzzling and challenging issue in view of the fact that Rab7 is a ubiquitous protein. The present review discusses possible molecular mechanisms underlying CMT2B
