A geography graduate’s transition into the labour market in Poland: a quantitative and qualitative evaluation of the process
Transition, i.e. the education-to-work shift, is considered one of the most important processes in human life. The characteristics of transition hinge on, first of all, the labour market situation, the economic climate in the region, the educational services market and the aspirations of society. Virtually unlimited access to education at an academic level and the growing appetite of young people for degrees have resulted in a rapid increase in the number of university graduates. Consequently, there has been a high supply of employees with university degrees. However, the speed and type of transition among recent graduates is one of the least investigated processes on the labour market in Poland

Graduates of geographical studies on the labour market in the process of transformation in higher education
Praca naukowa finansowana ze środków budżetowych na naukę w latach 2010–2012 jako projekt badawczy nr N N114 076739Unemployment, which also hits people with higher education, is one of the major socio-economic problems in Poland. This unfavourable situation is caused by the wrong conception of higher education which doesn't prepare graduates for employers' requirements. Curriculum strategies that have been followed contributed to the situation where many faculties at universities are perceived as the admission pass to professions poorly paid or even as those ones that don't give the opportunity of finding any job in the future. The author of this paper presents results of research performed among graduates of geographical studies in the system of two-stage studies (Bachelor's three-year studies and Master's two-year studies) and Master's five year-studies at Pedagogical University of Cracow. The main aims of this research were as follows: • Getting to know how graduates assess the competences acquired during their studies. These competences are regarded as the key ones in tuning research on a European scale; • Getting to know geographical studies graduates' plans, expectations and attitudes towards challenges of labour market. The results obtained proved that geography graduates, especially those with Bachelor's degree assessed most of the key competences as good and very good. Criteria which are taken into account while choosing a job are not dependent on money. The dominant criteria are the ability to join work with passions and the prospects for professional development. Respondents declared the intention to look for a job in the education sector and the civil service by means of the direct contact with an employer. .Danuta PirógKB
A Graduate's First Job: Expectations of Graduates and the Fulfillment of Their Plans
The transition of recent graduates to the labour market, including the labour market destinations they hold in comparison to their aspirations and plans, seems to be an under researched area. Especially interesting and important for higher education management policy is recognition of their first job destinations and the relevance between the study subject and real occupation. The article presents results of a survey on how Polish geographers enter the job market. The study compares geographers' professional qualifications, aspirations and plans about their future job expressed at the time of graduation with the actual fulfilment of those plans six months later. The background for the analysis is a study of the labour market destinations among Polish and international geographers over the last thirty years
Real demand for specialists with a geography degree in the light of job offer analyses and interviews with employers and employees
The article outlines an analysis of the size and structure of the market demand for people with a geography degree. The research is complemented by the input from employers with vacancies for geographers who present their views regarding finding suitable candidates. In order to accurately determine the demand for specialists in a given field and present an analysis that would justify drawing general conclusions, we need to monitor real staffing needs over an extended period and on at least national scale. Real demand can be monitored by tracking job postings. Our research was conducted in six countries (Austria, Ireland, Germany, Poland, Switzerland, United Kingdom) and the entire procedure lasted over three years. In each of the countries, we first monitored job advertisements and then conducted interviews to verify to what extend the demand for geography specialists was met. We also collected reflections from employees who applied for the advertised posts and found employment in the field of geography. Following this protocol, we established that within the period of eighteen months employers posted more than 17,000 job offers for geographers. We categorised them into eighteen main professional groups. Both in terms of the size and structure of demand for geographers, the most varied needs were expressed in the United Kingdom and Ireland followed by German-speaking countries and, finally, Poland. The employers generally managed to fill the vacancies; however, the greatest difficulties were reported by those who were looking for part-time teachers. The employers valued the qualifications and competences of the hired geography graduates highly. On the other hand, while being happy with their scope of duties, the employees were not always satisfied with the remuneration and stability of employment. This tendency was particularly visible among Polish respondents. In addition to filling the research gap, the study results may be useful to those who want to design curricula that facilitate university-to-work transition and help graduates find jobs corresponding to their field of study.Narodowe Centrum Nauk
Wybrane procesy kształtujące geografię jako kierunek studiów w Polsce w XXI wieku
The dynamic social, economic, and political transformations of recent years have shaped the contemporary image of Polish society and significantly impacted higher education institutions. Geography had to evolve as an academic discipline not only because of the Bologna Process or reforms of higher education system, but also to attract young people to degree courses in geography. The aim of this article is to demonstrate the chief processes that currently shape higher education and geography degree programmes in Poland. At the macro-scale, we examined the opening of the labour market and the market of educational services, integration with the Bologna system, demographic changes and the evolving aspirations of Polish society towards education and professional careers. In the analysis regarding geography, we focused on the changes in how school geography is viewed generally, the level of interest among young people to pursue geography degrees and the motivations behind choosing this programme among geography students. We have discussed the role of internal and external competition affecting geography degree courses and the formal division of geography as a discipline resulting from the new Law 2.0 on Higher Education currently being implemented in Poland. W ujęciu makro rozważono uwolnienie rynku pracy i rynku usług edukacyjnych, integrację z systemem bolońskim, przemiany demograficzne, ewolucję aspiracji polskiego społeczeństwa wobec wykształcenia i kariery zawodowej. W odniesieniu do geografii uwagę skupiono na zmianach w szeroko pojętej percepcji geografii szkolnej, zainteresowaniu młodzieży podejmowaniem tych studiów i motywach wyboru geografii wśród osób ją studiujących.
Selected Determinants of Higher Education Graduates Transition into Labour Market
The transition of university graduates in the 21st century from the stage of education to employment seems to be one of the most complex and difficult processes taking place at the labour market. The transition paths of people who finish studies in individual countries are mainly an effect of differences in economic level and economy conditions, social and cultural disparities and system differences, including the teaching systems. The efficiency of this process, apart from demographic and macroeconomic trends is influenced by accumulation of "career capital" especially the ability of transferring skills enquired in higher education into potential and real workplaces, individual and personal features, such as: aspirations, adaptability. The purpose of this paper is to present the determinants influencing the successful transition of graduates into the labor. The empirical research results based on theoretical considerations exemplify the influence of selected determinants, belonging to the group of educational capital, on the pace and nature of the transition to the labor market in the European countries and among the geography graduates in Poland
Delayed entry of higher education graduates into the labour market: causes, typology, consequences
Graduates of several education levels enter the labour market at a different
pace and use a broad variety of strategies. Results of literature studies show that labour
market transition is the most diverse among higher education graduates. This is mostly
because, on the one hand, in most developed countries it has been increasingly difficult
for people representing that population to find a satisfying job and, on the other hand,
their knowledge resources and broad horizons allow them to develop new creative solutions,
alternative to the traditional linear transition into adulthood. In the current circumstances,
the borderline between education and employment is becoming blurred, and the
transition process is becoming prolonged.
This article presents an analysis of the causes of delayed entry of higher education graduates
into the labour market, a typology of this phenomenon, and some reflections on its
consequences
The issue of labour research in the field of socio-economic geography in Poland and in the Anglophone countries
The labour market perceived as the mechanisms of its functioning, has been and still is an
important part of research devoted to structural changes in various scales of spatial systems. The scale
and range of current changes taking place on the local, regional and global labour market is so large
that industry and service studies have to take them into consideration. Research in this field, which
would not add labour market problems, seems to preclude a proper scientific analysis and formulating
conclusions. Geographers have understood this need and it can be seen in several papers. The purpose
of the article is to review the scientific papers in the field of socio-economic geography published in the
years 1945–2013 which were devoted to labour market problems. The analysis focuses on the evolution
of main research streams (as the consequences of political, economic and social changes in Poland) and
the change in the paradigm of labour research in geography in Anglophone world (from a geography
of labour to a labour geography)
Kariera zawodowa nauczycieli w warunkach przemian w systemie edukacji: zarys stanu badań
Economic, social and cultural changes generate new challenges on the labour market for the representatives of many professions, including teachers. The economic development, technological advancement, unemployment rate, demographic situation and social life models correspond to an individual’s attitude towards work and create conditions in which they pursue their professional aspirations. In the long term, the situation is reflected by career paths. The literature review shows that the most significant changes in the dynamics and type of career paths are visible in those professions that are strongly correlated with systemic changes. In the case of teachers, they result primarily from legal regulations that define the conditions of promotion and reforms of an educational system. Consequently, on the one hand, the law specifically controls the professional career path of teachers and at the same time makes the career path model uniform for the entire profession. On the other hand, restructuring process in the school network, and implementation of new plans and curricula as a result of educational reforms have an impact on the demand for teachers of certain specialties, including teachers of entrepreneurship, compelling them to take on a variety of career paths necessary to keep their job. These processes are clearly worthy of academic analysis because the quality of teachers’ work, closely related to their career path, plays a fundamental role in developing social capital. The objective of the paper is to present the results of the literature review regarding career structure theories and teachers’ professional career paths analysed both through the prism of professionalism and the situation on the educational labour market. The synthetic nature of the study makes the paper a theoretical discussion which analyses the results of both the Polish and foreign literature review in the chosen area of study
