In this study, one of the important building blocks of Turkish literature, which is known in a wide range of geography, especially in Anatolia, the motive of crane in the poetry of Pir Sultan Abdal who has been transformed into a legend in the language of the people with its life and personality is examined. According to the widespread understanding in Anatolia, cranes are seen as the symbol of purity, abundance, happiness, cleanliness, faith, patience and freedom. For this reason, the crane motive has an important place in folk tales, folk and divan poetry, folk songs, Alevi-Bektashi beliefs and literature. Therefore, this bird considered sacred, has become the symbol of the people accepted in the literature of Alevism-Bektashi, especially Hz. Ali. For about two thousand years, Crane has ensured communication between the homesickness and the expatriate, representing the most valued and loved people. In the Hacı Bektaş Veli Velayetnâmesi, the first Muslim Turkish sufi, Ahmed Yesevi, was registered as ’crane frost. Besides, Pir Sultan Abdal, regarded as Great by the Alevi people, frequently used the crane in his poems. Pir Sultan has been the most researched poet ever among the “Seven Great Poets”. As it is a very popular poet, it has been found that the ”Pir Sultan Abdal” tradition has been formed in Anatolia and the the pseudonym Pir Sultan was used by at least six poets. The poet, whose poem was identified in this study is Pir Sultan whose real name was Haydar who was born in Banaz village of Yıldızeli district in the beginning of 16th century. In this study, the, crane motive found in the poems belonging to Pir Sultan, which was compiled by İbrahim Aslanoğlu and Cahit Öztelli, was tried to be explained by the characteristics of the 16th century and the Alevi-Bektashi beliefs and rituals

Abstract A novel virus emerged from Wuhan, China, at the end of 2019 and quickly evolved into a pandemic, significantly impacting various industries, especially healthcare. One critical lesson from COVID-19 is the importance of understanding and predicting underlying comorbidities to better prioritize care and pharmacological therapies. Factors like age, race, and comorbidity history are crucial in determining disease mortality. While clinical data from hospitals and cohorts have led to the identification of these comorbidities, traditional approaches often lack a mechanistic understanding of the connections between them. In response, we utilized a deep learning approach to integrate COVID-19 data with data from other diseases, aiming to detect comorbidities with mechanistic insights. Our modified algorithm in the mpDisNet package, based on word-embedding deep learning techniques, incorporates miRNA expression profiles from SARS-CoV-2 infected cell lines and their target transcription factors. This approach is aligned with the emerging field of network medicine, which seeks to define diseases based on distinct pathomechanisms rather than just phenotypes. The main aim is discovery of possible unknown comorbidities by connecting the diseases by their miRNA mediated regulatory interactions. The algorithm can predict the majority of COVID-19's known comorbidities, as well as several diseases that have yet to be discovered to be comorbid with COVID-19. These potentially comorbid diseases should be investigated further to raise awareness and prevention, as well as informing the comorbidity research for the next possible outbreak

Chromatin modifications of hTERT gene in hTERT-immortalized human mesenchymal stem cells upon exposure to radiation

Regulation of telomerase activity is thought to participate in the cellular response to ionizing radiation. Epigenetic mechanisms play a role in this regulation, as well as other mechanisms such as transcription, phosphorylation, etc. Here, we investigated chromatin modifications in telomerase promoter upon exposure to ionizing radiation in human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSC) and telomerase-immortalized hMSCs (hMSC-telo1) together with a hMSC-telo1 cell line in which TRF2 expression was partially repressed (siTRF2 hMSC-telo1). Histone methylations and acetylations were compared in all cell lines after exposure to various doses of ionizing radiation (0.1, 1, 2.5 and 15 Gy) using chromatin immunoprecipitation assay. hTERT gene was shown to be quickly regulated through H3, H4 acetylations, as well as with H3K4 and H3K9 methylations, following radiation exposure, although the kinetic of hMSC-telo1 cells were different, indicative of the higher radioresistivity of these cells. To the author's surprise, there was an upregulation of endogenous telomerase activity in the hMSC-telo1 cells, even though the cells had already expressed high levels of ectopic hTERT. Our results show that telomerase regulation is one of the primary actions in response to damage and epigenetic factors play a major role in this regulation. Our results also suggested that partial silencing of TRF2 enhances the radiosensitivity of these cells, and endogenous telomerase is upregulated upon radiation, even under ectopic expression of hTERT in these cells

Network Based NLP Approach to Reveal Disease Comorbidities. COVID Case Study

SARS-CoV-2 virus, which caused the pandemic COVID-19 , infects the host cells via ACE2 receptor protein binding to spike proteins. Viral binding also alters the vascular effects of the ACE/ACE2 ratio, which results in a number of complications. These complications may have detrimental consequences on patients with chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, tension-related disorders, and kidney disease, which already have an unbalanced ratio of ACE/ACE2. Due to this mechanism, COVID-19 is extremely comorbid, and there may be other comorbidities with yet unidentified etiologies. In this work, possible comorbidities of COVID-19 examined by a network-based representation of miRNA-gene-disease interactions to reveal possibly similarly altered mechanisms in between diseases. The original algorithm was implemented as the mpDisNet package which is a word-embedding based deep learning technique. Algorithm itself was modified and optimized to increase True-Positive discovery rate by removal of highly frequent diseases such as cancer and expanding the test data by manual curation of comorbid diseases. Original approach was also modified by integration of miRNA expression profiles from SARS-CoV-2 infected cell line and transcription factors regulated by these miRNAs from related databases. The main aim this work is discovery of possible unknown comorbidities by connecting the diseases by their miRNA mediated regulatory interactions. The algorithm can predict the majority of COVID-19's known comorbidities reported in CDC website with high scores; (Diabetes (0,996), Heart Diseases (0,989), Schizophrenia (0,994), and Hypertension (0,994)), as well as total of 131 diseases that have yet to be discovered to be comorbid with COVID-19. These potential comorbid diseases should be investigated further in order to raise COVID-19 awareness and prevention. Our approach can be used for informing the comorbidity research for the next possible pandemic outbreak

Feasibility of Bolted Connectors in Hybrid FRP-Steel Structures

    No full text
Due to the low weight and excellent durability of composite materials, Fibre Reinforced Polymer (FRP) decks mounted on steel superstructures are becoming all the more common in engineering practice. Bolted joints are generally used to facilitate connections between an FRP deck and steel girders in road bridges. The connections are subjected to both high magnitude static forces as well as fatigue loading due to overpassing vehicles. With ever increasing traffic on both road and railway bridges, fatigue performance is of critical concern. Bolted FRP joints have been extensively researched in the past under static loading, but less is known about the fatigue and creep behaviour of such joints. Furthermore, little research exists on non-pultruded FRP profiles connected using bolted connections. Therefore, the objective of this research is to investigate connectors’ feasibility by means of static, fatigue and creep experiments on four different types of bolted joints comprising mechanical connectors and injection techniques. The study focuses on application in vacuum infused GFRP panels with integrated webs made of multi-directional laminates, connected to steel bridge superstructures. In addition, experimental results are validated by Finite Element Analyses (FEA). Based on the obtained results, the novel injected steel-reinforced resin (iSRR) connector developed at TU Delft shows promising potential in hybrid steel-FRP bridges where good fatigue endurance of the connection and local loads in FRP panel, are required.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository 'You share, we take care!' - Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Steel & Composite Structure
