    Pollination drop withdrawal in Juniperus communis: response to deposited material

    Background and Aims: The pollination drop is a liquid secretion produced by the ovule and exposed outside the micropyle. In many gymnosperms, pollen lands on the surface of the pollination drop, rehydrates and enters the ovule as the drop retracts. The objective of this work was to study the formation of the pollination drop in Juniperus communis, its carbohydrate composition and the response to deposition of conspecific pollen, foreign pollen and other particulate material, in an attempt to clarify the mechanism of pollination drop retraction. • Methods: Branches with female cones close to pollination drop secretion were collected. On the first day of pollination drop exposure, an eyelash mounted on a wooden stick with paraffin was used to collect pollen or silica gel particles, which were then deposited by contact with the drop. Volume changes in pollination drops were measured by using a stereomicroscope with a micrometer eyepiece 3 h after deposition. The volume of non-pollinated control drops was also recorded. On the first day of secretion, drops were also collected for sugar analysis by high-performance liquid chromatography. • Key Results: The pollination drop persisted for about 12 d if not pollinated, and formed again after removal for up to four consecutive days. After pollination with viable conspecific pollen, the drop retracted quickly and did not form again. Partial withdrawal occurred after deposition of other biological and non-biological material. Fructose was the dominant sugar; glucose was also present but at a much lower percentage. • Conclusions: Sugar analysis confirmed the general trend of fructose dominance in gymnosperm pollination drops. Complete pollination drop withdrawal appears to be triggered by a biochemical mechanism resulting from interaction between pollen and drop constituents. The results of particle deposition suggest the existence of a non-specific, particle-size-dependent mechanism that induces partial pollination drop withdrawal. These results suggest that the non-specific response may decrease the probability of pollen landing on the drop, reducing pollination efficiency. © The Author 2007.     Solo negli ultimi anni si è fatta chiara la percezione della biodiversità come un bene economico da valutare in sé. La valutazione della biodiversità riguarda il valore intrinseco delle risorse ed i servizi ad essa legati (principi attivi, controllo dell’erosione, stoccaggio di CO2, benessere fisico e spirituale, processi biologici che assicurano l’evoluzione della vita e degli ecosistemi) e di conseguenza i benefici che può trarne l’uomo. Tra questi benefici devono essere inclusi quelli realizzabili attraverso le accessioni presenti nelle collezioni ex situ del germoplasma. Un altro aspetto della valutazione ha come oggetto i danni provocati ll’ambiente e all’uomo quando lo stock di biodiversità (ed i servizi che da essa si originano) viene compromesso da scelte economiche basate sui soli meccanismi di mercato e/o da politiche errate o dall’assenza di politiche di tutela. Dal punto di vista della conservazione ex situ tali costi sono ascrivibili alle trasformazioni del territorio che provocano perdite di biodiversità prima che questa venga conosciuta e conservata, o si configurano come costi del non-intervento, ossia la mancata realizzazione di azioni di conservazione

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     Variations on the Author

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Pollen and seed desiccation tolerance in relation to degree of developmental arrest, dispersal, and survival

    In most species, arrest of growth and a decrease in water content occur in seeds and pollen before they are dispersed. However, in a few cases, pollen and seeds may continue to develop (germinate). Examples are cleistogamy and vivipary. In all other cases, seeds and pollen are dispersed with a variable water content (2-70%), and consequently they respond differently to environmental relative humidity that affects dispersal and maintenance of viability in time. Seeds with low moisture content shed by the parent plant after maturation drying can generally desiccate further to moisture contents in the range of 1-5% without damage and have been termed 'orthodox'. Pollen that can withstand dehydration also was recently termed orthodox. Seeds and pollen that do not undergo maturation drying and are shed at relatively high moisture contents (30-70%) are termed 'recalcitrant'. Since recalcitrant seeds and pollen are highly susceptible to desiccation damage, they cannot be stored under conditions suitable for orthodox seeds and pollen. Hence, there are four types of plants with regard to tolerance of pollen and seeds to desiccation. Orthodoxy allows for dispersal over greater distances, longer survival, and greater resistance to low relative humidity. The advantage of recalcitrance is fast germination. Orthodoxy and recalcitrance are often related to environment rather than to systematics. It has been postulated that certain types of genes are involved during presentation and dispersal of pollen and seeds, since molecules (sucrose, polyalcohols, late embryogenic abundant proteins, antioxidants, etc.) that protect different cell compartments during biologically programmed drying have been detected in both. © 2011 The Author

    Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
