[Silver and Black], a poem by Jerzy Liebert Do poety [To the Poet] introduces two counter-
effects: his own self-portrait and a portrait of Lechoń. This gesture of the portraitist
discloses something irritatingly dispatching and, at the same time, disturbingly concealing.
Not only does Liebert raise doubts (“what if…”), basically framing his artistic
self-consciousness, but also liberates himself from the cumbersome protection of Skamander.
This temerity of looking into poetic looking-glasses, one’s own and those of
others, allows him to rich full independence of artistic means, which will reveal itself
in the later artistic period
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Get PDFSebyła’s nocturne designated in the cycle as number sever (7) can be easily inscribed into the imagery of the night and the accompanying images of parvor nocturnus. It is the only poem in the cycle which emphasizes the exposition of the subject’s activity, giving primacy to the first-person monologue of the subject, the agent of a nighttime competition with an angel (God). Moreover, it is the only poem in this cycle which clearly hints at autobiographical context – familial gestures or celebration of remembrance. The nocturnal tale spun by Sebyła focuses on an event which originates in the biblical story of Jacob wrestling with an Angel, while at the same time revisiting (reinterpreting) its sense and message. Into this poetic somnambulia of a personal, particular, biographical (that of the unequal wrestling competition between the new Jacob and God) scope, the author inscribed an account of universal experiences – the incidental nature of human disposition, the fragility of the human condition, the loneliness of existence. The poet seems to tell his reader that it is necessary to accept a difficult, asymmetrical partnership and nonequivalent relations and thus tame our mundane spiritual orphanage
Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. is coherent due to the both superior eponymous categories: consideration
and emotions. Paradoxically, those two, so different and contradictory
to each other, symptoms of human responses to the world seem to
order the poetical world view of the author of Jeszcze jedno wspomnienie (One
More Recollection). Poświatowska skillfully blends those all too human experiences
and creates a remarkable weave of them thanks to whom the subject
of the poet’s work is able to access the complicated matter of transgressive
human experiences of love and death, which are exceptionally “sensitive spots”
on the poetical map of her considerations and emotions. What makes them
become cohesive is corporeal; a body, painfully experienced by subsequent
romantic disappointments and, through illness, becoming more and more
aware of approaching the end. Moreover, Eros and Thanatos are for the hero
of Poświatowska’s poems quite demanding antagonists. In this uneven wrestling
match the gods fight the constant battle to rule her body forcing her to
think over its condition, abilities and constrains. The battle is not in the least
a delusion, or a literary self-image creation. The two elements, sexual and
mortal, are peculiarly symbiotic. The sexual element, in its expansive vitality,
becomes synonymous with life. But, on the other hand, it always casts a long
shadow – the though of death. The scription result of this poetry is weighty
as a testamental inscription – a poetic rendering of a human being facing the
cruel fate of prematurely fading life. The poetry of Poświatowska is the genu ine live-writing; somatic writing in which every line of gasping style gives an
impression of a hasty autotherapy.
The category of experience is no less important in the studies on
Poświatowska’s poetry, since it assumes a leading role of the measure of individual
sensitivity of human being while approaching oneself and the world. This
sensitivity was developed by both consideration and emotions. Considering the
reality, including herself and her fate, was a process that demanded from the
poet a sustained intellectual effort that was put under circumstances of violent
emotional tremors and the hubbub of feelings. All of this was depicted in the
poetical notebook – the collections of poems, formed as a study of a human
being and the world. The permanent thinking-over of the reality was always
triggered by the lifelong attempts to conceptualize the poet’s own existence, its
passing nature, and poor condition in confronting experiences mandataries
of which are the members of human community always keeping scientific definitions,
religious doctrines, as well as dogmas, cultural clichés and stereotypes,
on their deposit. This constant comparison of patterns used in perceiving
the world; stemming from what the reason usurped, what rules of language
(in terms of its logic and grammar) provided; to what tedious, though full of
traps and surprises, life experience offers (and deals us with). Traces of cognition
in Poświatowska’s poetry become apparent in various ways, for example through
applying the “points of view” category which helps to access the complicated
matter of existential experiences, or through the attempt to find the words that
convey those experiences’ meanings and great weight. This investigation is by no
means isolated or conducted with laboratory-like sterility. On the contrary, the
considerations are inherently accompanied by emotions – those of fear, fright,
and feeling lost. In a way, they thrive in the background, never fully conceivable
but always ready to overtake the foreground. To indentify all those dramatic
experiences of, not only her own, life’s finiteness, is the purpose towards which
the endeavor of Poświatowska’s poetry is directed
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
Get PDFWe conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more

No full textWe have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
