******** Within the company, there are many problems related to quality, so solutions are needed to achieve the expected quality. One solution is to apply the Quality Control Circle (QCC) method. QCC is a quality control system using an 8-step method with a continuous improvement system or kaizen. PT. XYZ is an automotive manufacturing company in Indonesia located in Bogor, West Java. One of the products from this automotive company is a 4 mm diameter pin and a 2 mm diameter pin. Short pin is a condition where the pin product produced by a pin cutting machine has dimensions below the established standards. The standard pin dimensions are 9 mm with a tolerance of +0 mm and -0.15 mm. The effect of this short pin is that it can cause the machine to stop at the assembly, damage tools and reduce efficiency. This research aims to analyze defects in 2 mm diameter pin products, find out the factors that cause defects in 2 mm pin products and provide suggestions for improvements to reduce defects in 2 mm pin products using the Quality Control Circle (QCC) method. This research uses the Quality Control Circle (QCC) method, which contains 8 Steps for Problem Solving and 7 Quality Control (QC) Tools. Based on the condition analysis carried out on the short NG Pin using factors 4M+1E, namely material and method factors. By using the help of a cause-and-effect (fishbone) diagram, it can be seen that the root cause of Short NG Pins is the absence of a time period for cleaning the cutting unit, checking visually or subjectively and straightening the forming model. Proposed improvements made to reduce short NG Pins are making the Jig center Cutting Round Blade Block (CRBB) & Cutiing Round Blade Slide (CRBS), adding a cleaning time period at Work instruction (WI) and changing the shape of the straightener from deformed to rolle

Mga Susing Salita: komiks, Carabao English, Kenkoy, patriotismo, wika Kenkoy’s Humourous English in Comics: An Analysis on the use of “Carabao English” as an Instrument of Advancing Patriotism under the American Colonial Period; 1929 – 1934 Abstract“Carabao English” is portrayed as a farcical and an unfavorable means of communication. It was known to caused by an enforced adherence to the use of a foreign language wherein it formed a ‘corrupted version’ (based on the Philippine enumeration) of the English language due to its contact and mixing with the Filipino language. This paper aims to trace the usage of “Carabao English” based on the dialogues in Tony Velasquez’ Kenkoy Komiks. The main character, Kenkoy, embodies the use of “Humourous English” which at first glance may seem laughable however under thorough analysis implies patriotic values and underscores the struggles of Filipinos under a colonial society. The purpose of this study is to highlight and contextualize the use of “Carabao English” under the American colonial period in the Philippines and its use by the author in order to achieve nationhood. The dynamics of response and conflict within the Filipino society under a period of cultural change brought about by a new colonial era based on the comics, can be seen from the study. The study proposes that language underwent a process of acculturation where it reflects a gradual acceptance of foreign cultural elements within the Filipino society but nevertheless, became instrumental in promoting patriotism by serving as an alternative expression of continued resistance to American colonial rule. Keywords: comics, Carabao English, Kenkoy, patriotism, languag

The Biology and Biochemistry of PhoH2 proteins

    No full text
PhoH2 proteins are found in a diverse range of organisms. To date little is known about these proteins and the role they play in the organisms in which they reside. PhoH2 is a PIN PhoH domain fusion, and these proteins are currently annotated as having unknown function and are described as PhoH like. PhoH domains are thought to be ATPases and all characterised PIN domain proteins are RNases. Most efforts have focussed on determining the role of PIN domain proteins that comprise the toxic component (VapC) of VapBC toxin antitoxin systems, in which the PIN domain is coexpressed as part of an operon with an inhibitor (VapB). In the remaining cases where PIN domain proteins can be found such as PIN PhoH domain fusions, these cases remain unexamined. This thesis describes the biological and biochemical characterisation of the PIN PhoH protein, PhoH2 from Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Mycobacterium smegmatis, along with a preliminary structural characterisation of a thermophilic PhoH2 protein homologue. The phoH2 gene from both mycobacterial organisms was found to be expressed as part of a long mRNA transcript. Examination of these transcripts revealed possible alternative 5’ start sites out of frame with the phoH2 gene. For protein overexpression, and ‘normal’ growth and colony formation with conditional overexpression, phoH2 from M. tuberculosis required 152 bp of the 5’ sequence directly upstream of the annotated phoH2 gene (annotated here as phoH2alt). PhoH2 proteins: PhoH2alt MTB, PhoH2alt MSMEG and PhoH2MSMEG show ATP/Mg²⁺ dependent, sequence specific RNA unwinding and cleavage. The sequence (A C) (A/U) (A/U) (G/C) U was deduced as a substrate for PhoH2, and PhoH2alt MTB also demonstrated unwinding and cleavage activity on its upstream ~152 base RNA transcript, suggesting a potential autoregulatory mechanism. Structural analysis of a thermophilic PhoH2 protein homologue has provided preliminary crystallographic data which along with electron microscopy suggest a ring like hexameric PhoH2 oligomer

Susing salita: Vicente Rama, salin, kathang pangkasaysayan, kolera   ABSTRACT“Artemio Aranas” is a short story or sugilanon in Sugbuanong Binisaya. It was written by Vicente Rama: fictionist, newspaper editor, and politician from Cebu City, Cebu. “Artemio Aranas” was translated into English by essayist-fictionist Renato Madrid (nom de plume of Fr. Rodolfo Villanueva) and was among those rendered into that language in a compilation of Rama’s works released in 2003. The short story was situated during one of the cholera epidemics that hit Cebu in the 1900s. That context will be discussed in the first part of the paper. One can notice in the narrative the tensions between “modern, scientific” knowledge in medicine that were brought by American occupiers and the traditional beliefs being held by the Cebuanos during at that time. There were also tensions between the “older” and “younger” generations that broke out amid the political, cultural, and lingustic changes raveling in the archipelago during those times. “Artemio Aranas” also features the perceived misinformation by some newspapers in Cebu on the epidemic and the bull-headedness of some people in that capital of Cebu province. This author recommends a Filipino translation of “Artemio Aranas” in order to make the story more accessible to readers who do not have a copy, either of the Sugbuanong Binisaya original or of the English translation. The challenges in making this translation will also be mentioned. Keywords: Vicente Rama, translation, historical fiction, choler

Mga susing salita: nobelang Tagalog, panunuring pampanitikan, babae, manggagawa, panahon ng Amerikano ABSTRACTThe study analyzes how representations in literature relate the imagined and real lives of individuals in society. Because women workers provided a tangible material for Valeriano Hernandez-Peña in re-imagining American colonialism, the article examines how they were recreated in the novels of the author. How did Hernandez-Peña articulate the experiences of the female character and her oppression as a woman and a worker? In the process, how is the character given agency to transform her condition in the novel? Using an allegorical reading that encompasses the political, social, and historical, the researcher outlined connections and correspondences in the context of economics, labor, and prevailing concepts on women during the period. As a whole, even if Hernandez-Peña produced mostly romantic novels confined to the patriarchal ideology, there are crevices in the text where resistant images/spaces of/for women workers flow. The study contributes to the existing research on women workers during American colonialism as well as to the continuing discourses on gender. Keywords: Tagalog novel, literary criticism, women, workers, American perio

A fast and efficient implementation of qualitatively constrained quantile smoothing splines: Working paper series--05-08

    No full text
Exploiting the sparse structure of the design matrices involved in the Frisch-Newton method, we implement a fast and efficient algorithm to compute qualitatively constrained smoothing and regression splines for quantile regression. In a previous implementation (He and Ng, 1999), the linear program involved was solved using the non-simplex active set algorithm for quantile smoothing spines proposed by Ng (1996). The current implementation uses the Frisch-Newton algorithm described in Koenker and Ng (2005a, 2005b). It is a variant of the interiorpoint algorithm proposed by Portnoy and Koenker (1997) which has been shown to outperform the simplex method in many applications. The current implementation relies on the R package SparseM of Koenker and Ng (2003) which contains a collection of basic linear algebra routines for sparse matrices to exploit the sparse structure of the matrices involved in the linear program to further speed up computation and save memory usage. A small simulation illustrates the superior performance of the new implementation

A Parallel Prefiltering Approach for the Identification of a Biased Sinusoid Signal: Theory and Experiments

    No full text
The problem of estimating the amplitude, frequency, and phase of an unknown sinusoidal signal from a noisy-biased measurement is addressed in this paper by a family of parallel prefiltering schemes. The proposed methodology consists in using a pair of linear filters of specified order to generate a suitable number of auxiliary signals that are used to estimate—in an adaptive way—the frequency, the amplitude, and the phase of the sinusoid. Increasing the order of the prefilters improves the noise immunity of the estimator, at the cost of an increase of the computational complexity. Among the whole family of estimators realizable by varying the order of the filters, the simple parallel prefilters of orders 2 C 2 and 3 C 3 are discussed in detail, being the most attractive from the implementability point of view. The behavior of the two algorithms with respect to bounded external disturbances is characterized by input-to-state stability arguments. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed technique is shown both by comparative numerical simulations and by a real experiment addressing the estimation of the frequency of the electrical mains from a noisy voltage measurement

An Adaptive-Observer-Based Robust Estimator of Multi-sinusoidal Signals

    No full text
This paper presents an adaptive observer-based robust estimation methodology of the amplitudes, frequencies and phases of biased multi-sinusoidal signals in presence of bounded perturbations on the measurement. The parameters of the sinusoidal components are estimated on-line and the update laws are individually controlled by an excitation-based switching logic enabling the update of a parameter only when the measured signal is sufficiently informative. This way doing, the algorithm is able to tackle the problem of over-parametrization (i.e., when the internal model accounts for a number of sinusoids that is larger than the true spectral content) or temporarily fading sinusoidal components. The stability analysis proves the existence of a tuning parameter set for which the estimator's dynamics are input-to-state stable with respect to bounded measurement disturbances. The performance of the proposed estimation approach is evaluated and compared with other existing tools by extensive simulation trials and real-time experiments

CD57 in human natural killer cells and T-lymphocytes

    No full text
The CD57 antigen (alternatively HNK-1, LEU-7, or L2) is routinely used to identify terminally differentiated ‘senescent’ cells with reduced proliferative capacity and altered functional properties. In this article, we review current understanding of the attributes of CD57-expressing T-cells and NK cells in both health and disease and discuss how this marker can inform researchers about their likely functions in human blood and tissues in vivo. While CD57 expression on human lymphocytes indicates an inability to proliferate, these cells also display high cytotoxic potential, and CD57pos NK cells exhibit both memory-like features and potent effector functions. Accordingly, frequencies of CD57-expressing cells in blood and tissues have been correlated with clinical prognosis in chronic infections or various cancers and with human aging. Functional modulation of senescent CD57pos T-cells and mature CD57pos NK cells may therefore represent innovative strategies for protection against human immunological aging and/or various chronic diseases
