Shape Reconstruction by the Spectral Data of the far-field Operator: Analysis and Performances
The second version of the "linear sampling" method is considered with reference to perfectly conducting cylinders and its performances analyzed. It is pointed out that, for nonconvex objects, the shape of the object under test is not retrieved, whereas in its place the convex hull is recovered. We also point out that in the case of aspect limited data neither the convex hull of the object is reconstructed
Evaluation of the Number of Degrees of Freedom of the Field Scattered by a 3D Geometry
The solution to an ill-posed linear inverse problem requires the use of regularization methods to achieve a stable approximation solution. One powerful approach is the truncated singular value decomposition (TSVD), but it requires an appropriate choice of the truncation level. One suitable option is to take into account the number of degrees of freedom (NDF) of the scattered field, which is defined by the step-like behavior of the singular values of the relevant operator. Then, the NDF can be estimated as the number of singular values preceding the knee or the exponential decay. Therefore, an analytical estimation of the NDF is significant for obtaining a stable, regularized solution. This paper addresses the analytical estimation of the NDF of the field scattered by the surface of a cube geometry for a single frequency and the multi-view case in the far-zone. In addition, a method is proposed to find the minimum numbers of plane waves and their directions to achieve the total estimated NDF. The main results are that the NDF is related to the measure of the surface of the cube and can be achieved by only considering a limited number of impinging plane waves. The efficiency of the theoretical discussion is demonstrated through a reconstruction application for microwave tomography of a dielectric object. Near-field warping sampling scheme for broad-side antenna characterization
In this paper the problem of sampling the field radiated by a planar source observed over a finite planar aperture located in the near-field is addressed. The problem is cast as the determination of the spatial measurement positions which allow us to discretize the radiation problem so that the singular values of the radiation operator are well-approximated. More in detail, thanks to a suitably warping transformation of the observation variables, the kernel function of the relevant operator is approximated by a band-limited function and hence the sampling theorem applied to achieved discretization. It results in the sampling points having to be non-linearity arranged across the measurement aperture and their number can be considerably lowered as compared to more standard sampling approach. It is shown that the proposed sampling scheme works well for measurement apertures that are not too large as compared to the source’s size. As a consequence, the method appears better suited for broad-side large antenna whose radiated field is mainly concentrated in front of the antenna. A numerical analysis is included to check the theoretical findings and to study the trade-off between the field accuracy representation (over the measurement aperture) and the truncation error in the estimated far-field radiation pattern

This letter deals with microwave imaging via a migration-like inversion method. The aim is the determination of a spatial sampling scheme which allows to collect as low as possible spatial measurements and to preserve the point-spread function features and hence, the achievable performance in the reconstructions. To keep math simple and to more easily illustrate the theoretical arguments, the study is developed for a 2-D monostatic scalar configuration and a homogeneous background medium. Imaging of voids by means of a physical-optics-based shape-reconstruction algorithm
We analyze the performance of a shape-reconstruction algorithm for the retrieval of voids starting from the electromagnetic scattered field. Such an algorithm exploits the physical optics (PO) approximation to obtain a linear unknown-data relationship and performs inversions by means of the singular-value-decomposition approach. In the case of voids, in addition to a geometrical optics reflection, the presence of the lateral wave phenomenon must be considered. We analyze the effect of the presence of lateral waves on the reconstructions. For the sake of shape reconstruction, we can regard the PO algorithm as one of assuming the electric and magnetic field on the illuminated side as constant in amplitude and linear in phase, as far as the dependence on the frequency is concerned. Therefore we analyze how much the lateral wave phenomenon impairs such an assumption, and we show inversions for both one single and two circular voids, for different values of the background permittivity
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
