Ultrasonographic evaluation of the mammary cistern size during dry period in healthy dairy cows

The dry period (DP) is defined as the nonlactating period prior to parturition in dairy cows. During the DP, new udder tissue
is formed and prepared for the next lactation [1]. The aim of this study was to evaluate the udder cistern (UC) size during the
dry period by the ultrasound technique.
Methods
Ten Italian Friesian cows were included, for a total of 40 quarters. All the cows underwent the same management condition.
The following inclusion criteria were set: 1) no heifer; 2) abruptly drying-off; 3) no mastitis or other diseases at drying-off
and during the whole study period. A convex probe (5 MHz) was placed immediately cranial to the insertion of each teat on
the udder in order to visualize the UC of each quarter. The probe was first held parallel to the teat for a longitudinal section,
then a 90° rotation was applied for the cross-section view [2]. All the animals were evaluated at the drying-off (T0) and
24 hours later (T1), then regularly until the end of the dry period (T7, T14, T21, T28, T38, T48, T58), during the colostrum
production phase (TCPP) and at 7 days in milking (T7PP). The Spearman test was applied to evaluate the correlation between
ultrasonographic UC size (UUCS) assessment and time. The Friedman test and the Dunn’s test for multiple comparisons
as post-hoc were performed to compare the cross-section UUCS of the forequarters (FQCS) and hindquarters (HQCS) and
the longitudinal section UUCS of the forequarters (FQL) and hindquarters (HQL) at T0 vs T58 vs TCPP vs T7PP. Values of
p <0.05 were considered statistically significant.
Results
No subject developed mastitis or other diseases during the study period. The ultrasound evaluation of the UUCS was easy to
perform in field conditions. A total of 440 images have been measured. There was a statistically significant negative linear
correlation between the time and the UUCS for FQCS and FQL (r = -0.95; p <0.0004) and for HQCS and HQL (r = -0.90; p
<0.002). The Friedman test was statistically significant (p <0.0001), showing that the UUCS at T58 were lower, compared
to other times for FQCS, FQL and HQCS. T0 did not differ from TCPP.
Conclusions
No studies can be found in literature evaluating the UUCS during the dry period. Studies on UC cellular proliferation showed
that the UC cellular involution during dry period peaked 25 days after the dry-off [3,4]. In our study, the UUCS decreased
throughout the whole dry period and started to increase at the beginning of the next lactation. This difference could be due
to a discrepancy between the UC cellular proliferative and the ultrasonographic evaluation of the UC. In conclusion, the
evaluation of the UUCS during the dry period in healthy cows was feasible for field conditions. UUCS might give useful
information for the udder dry period monitoring.

Handheld-Impedance-Measurement System with seven-decade capability and potentiostatic function
No full textThis paper describes design and test of a new impedance-measurement system for nonlinear devices that exhibits a seven-decade range and works down to a frequency of 0.01 Hz. The system is specifically designed for electrochemical measurements, but the proposed architecture can be employed in many other fields where flexible signal generation and analysis are required. No full textA quasi trent’anni dall’emanazione del Regolamento comunitario 2137/1985 che ne segna la data di nascita, e a venticinque dalla effettiva possibilità di costituzione, il gruppo europeo di interesse economico (GEIE) è ancora percepito, nella migliore delle ipotesi, come una specie di “oggetto misterioso” nel panorama giuridico italiano ed europeo. Lo scopo di questo studio, che ha beneficiato del sostegno economico della Commissione Europea e della Provincia autonoma di Trento nell’ambito del Settimo Programma Quadro, Azione Marie Curie COFUND, progetto “TRENTINO”, è di tentare una riconduzione ragionata del GEIE a categorie che siano di maggiore familiarità per il giurista italiano, indagandone le problematiche principali (su tutte l’assenza del beneficio della responsabilità limitata dei membri per le obbligazioni assunte dal gruppo) ed offrendo ipotesi di soluzione
Valutazione ecografica della cisterna mammaria in bovine sane in asciutta
No full textIl periodo di asciutta permette l’involuzione del tessuto mammario e la sua rigenerazione, preparando le bovine alla successiva lattazione. Lo scopo di questo studio è stato quello di valutare ecograficamente le dimensioni della cisterna mammaria (CM) durante il periodo di asciutta. Sono state incluse 10 bovine di razza Frisona italiana, per un totale di 40 quarti, provenienti dal medesimo allevamento e management, in base ai seguenti criteri: 1) almeno un parto all’attivo; 2) asciugate mediante protocollo di messa in asciutta drastica; 3) assenza di mastite, o altre patologie, al momento della messa in asciutta e per tutta la durata dello studio. Per ciascun quarto la sonda convex (5 MHz) era posta subito cranialmente all’inserzione del capezzolo sulla mammella. La sonda era mantenuta prima parallelamente al capezzolo per una sezione longitudinale della CM, successivamente era ruotata di 90° per una sezione trasversale della CM. I soggetti sono stati valutati: il giorno della messa in asciutta (T0) e il giorno successivo (T1), poi con cadenze regolari fino al termine dell’asciutta (T7, T14, T21, T28, T38, T48, T58), nella fase colostrale (TCPP) e al settimo giorno di lattazione (T7PP). Il test di Kolmogorov Smirnov ha valutato la distribuzione dei dati. Il test di Spearman è stato applicato per valutare la correlazione fra le dimensioni ecografiche della CM (DECM) e i tempi di valutazione dell’asciutta. Il test di Friedman e il test di Dunn per le comparazioni multiple come post-hoc sono stati eseguiti per valutare le modificazioni delle DECM per i quarti anteriori (QAT) e posteriori nelle sezioni trasversali (QPT) e longitudinali (QAL e QPL) per i tempi T0 vs T58 vs TCPP vs T7PP. Valori per p<0.05 sono stati considerati statisticamente significativi. Nessun soggetto ha sviluppato mastite o altre patologie durante il periodo di studio. La valutazione ecografica delle DECM è risultata facilmente eseguibile in campo. Era presente una correlazione lineare negativa statisticamente significativa tra il tempo e le dimensioni ecografiche della CM per QAT e QAL (r = -0.95; p<0.0004) e per QPT e QPL (r = -0.90; p<0.002). Il test di Friedman è risultato statisticamente significativo (p< 0.0001) rivelando che le DECM erano inferiori a T58, rispetto ai tempi di inizio asciutta e lattazione per QAT, QAL e QPT. T0 non differiva da TCPP. In letteratura non sono presenti altri studi che valutano le DECM dall’asciutta alla ripresa della lattazione. Studi sulla proliferazione cellulare della CM avevano evidenziato che l’involuzione cellulare raggiungeva un picco 25 giorni post asciutta, poi tendeva ad aumentare. Nel nostro studio, le DECM risultavano invece diminuire durante tutta l’asciutta ed aumentare solo alla ripresa della lattazione. Queste differenze potrebbero essere dovute a una discrepanza fra le caratteristiche proliferative cellulari del tessuto mammario della CM e la sua traduzione in dimensioni macroscopiche e valutabili ecograficamente. In conclusione, la tecnica di valutazione delle DECM durante la fase di asciutta in bovine sane è facilmente fruibile in campo. Le informazioni da essa derivanti potrebbero essere utilizzate per il monitoraggio del corretto andamento dell’asciutta
