Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. No full textWe have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
Effects of exposure to hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) and antioxidant defense response in Exiguobacterium indicum HG8: oxidative stress and bioaccumulation potential
No full textChromium (Cr) contaminated areas pose a risk to the sustainability and biodiversity of ecosystems, demanding, therefore, the application of remediation processes to ensure its recovery and environmental safety. Hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) resistant bacteria have shown potential to be applied to bioremediation processes due to the development of various defense mechanisms, which can be used on Cr reduction. In this study, the rhizobacteria HG8 identified with a 99.88% similarity by 16S rRNA as Exiguobacterium indicum (KY439921.1) was isolated from the aquatic macrophyte Hymenachne grumosa, collected by the Santa Bárbara stream, an environment with heavy metal pollution, including Cr, by anthropogenic activities. For this purpose, the characteristics studied were the Cr(VI) removal capacity and the biomarkers (superoxide dismutase – SOD; catalase – CAT; glutathione peroxidase – GPx e produção de malondialdehyde – MDA production) response induced by the oxidative stress under culture medium supplemented with 50, 100, 200 and 300mg L -1 of Cr(VI), the minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) and optimal pH and temperature conditions to maximize Cr(VI) removal. The isolated’s MIC was 400mg L -1 of Cr(VI) and results show that E. indicum HG8 was able to grow and remove Cr within a wide range of incubation temperatures (20-45ºC) and pH (5.0-9.0), indicating the capacity to adapt to extreme conditions. The ideal condition of growth and removal of Cr(VI) was verified at pH 6.0 and incubation temperature of 30ºC. E. indicum HG8 was able to effectively remove 99.6% of Cr(VI) and 89.4% of total Cr from the culture medium after 24 hours of incubation. The rise of MDA content in the extracellular extract shows that lipidic damage had occurred, in parallel to the rising in adaptative response of antioxidant enzymes CAT and SOD, which indicates that the oxidative stress has been reached. Data suggest that E. indicum HG8 probably has changed the permeability of the cell membrane, turning it into a sort of barrier, since there is no significant change in MDA concentration, nor antioxidant enzymes response in the intracellular extract. With such results, the isolated can be used as a potential agent for effective remediation of Cr(VI) contaminated areas, to reach environmental security and protect human and animal health.Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPESÁreas contaminadas com cromo (Cr) representam um risco para a biodiversidade dos ecossistemas e para a sustentabilidade, exigindo, portanto, a aplicação de processos de remediação para sua recuperação e garantia da segurança ambiental. Bactérias resistentes ao cromo hexavalente (Cr(VI)) demonstram potencial para aplicação na biorremediação devido ao desenvolvimento de diversos mecanismos de resistência que podem ser usados para a remoção de Cr. No presente estudo, a rizobactéria HG8 identificada com 99,88% de similaridade pelo gene 16S rRNA como Exiguobacterium indicum (KY439921.1) foi isolada da macrófita aquática Hymenachne grumosa, coletada no canal Santa Bárbara de Pelotas, ambiente poluído por metais pesados, incluindo o Cr. Os aspectos estudados foram a capacidade de remoção de Cr(VI) e a resposta de biomarcadores de estresse oxidativo (superóxido dismutase – SOD; catalase – CAT; glutationa peroxidase – GPx e produção de malondialdeído – MDA) sob meio de cultura suplementado com 50, 100, 200 e 300mg L-1 de Cr(VI), a concentração inibitória mínima de crescimento (CIM), além das condições ótimas de pH e temperatura para máxima remoção de Cr(VI). A CIM do isolado foi de 400mg L 1 de Cr(VI) e os resultados demonstraram que E. indicum HG8 foi capaz de crescer e remover Cr em uma ampla faixa de temperaturas de incubação (20-45ºC) e de pH (5,0-9,0), evidenciando sua capacidade de adaptação a diferentes condições. As condições ideais de cultivo e remoção de Cr(VI) foram verificadas em pH 6,0 e temperatura de incubação de 30ºC. E. indicum HG8 foi capaz de remover eficientemente 99,6% de Cr(VI) e 89,4% de Cr total do meio de cultura em 24 horas de incubação. O aumento nos teores de MDA no extrato extracelular demonstra que houve dano lipídico, paralelamente ao aumento da resposta adaptativa das enzimas antioxidantes CAT e SOD, que indica que o estresse oxidativo foi estabelecido. Os dados sugerem que E. indicum HG8 possivelmente alterou a permeabilidade da membrana celular, formando uma espécie de barreira, uma vez que não houve aumento significativo nas concentrações de MDA e, da mesma forma, na resposta das enzimas antioxidantes no extrato intracelular. Tendo isso em vista, o isolado resistente pode ser utilizado como potencial agente para biorremediação efetiva de locais contaminados com Cr(VI), visando garantir a segurança ambiental e a proteção da saúde humana e animal
