    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used

    Diplôme : Dr. Ing.Light models simulate the distribution of understory lighting by explicitly taking the interception of incident radiation by the forest stand into account. In particular, they make it possible to analyse the influence of stand structure on the dynamics of forest regeneration. Unfortunately, a detailed characterisation of the trees and of their crown geometry is necessary to model heterogeneous stands, it is necessary to have. Our goal is to make these models more accessible by proposing to reduce the quantity of data required. In order to do so, we chose a heterogeneous broadleaved stand and measured the data set necessary to run a light model (tRAYci). An in-depth analysis of the crown geometry allowed us to establish relationships between the variables characteristic of the crown and the diameter of the trees at 1.30 m for each species encountered. It also revealed a high degree of plasticity of crown lateral extension. On this basis, we were able to develop an algorithm that allowed us to take competition between crowns for space occupation into account. It consists of reconstructing each crown by adapting its lateral extension to neighbour crowns, given only the species of the tree, its diameter at a height of 1.30 m and its position. We compared this reconstruction method (anisotropic) to a simpler method (isotropic), in relation to the simulation quality of the distribution of relative light intensity obtained with the reconstructed crowns. Only the anisotropic approach allowed us to obtain an unbiased simulation of lighting distribution at the level of the plot. We tested to see if it was possible to totally eliminate crown geometry data by proposing field measurement indices based on the spatial distribution of the stand basal area (the area of the horizontal section of the trunk at a height of 1.30 m). However, these indices proved incapable of predicting the light distribution in an unbiased way as a result of the structural heterogeneity of the stand. The establishment of relationships between crown characteristics and diameter at 1.30 m seems inevitable, but the anisotropic reconstruction method proposed makes it possible to limit crown characterisation to a maximum and to thus very significantly reduce the number of measurements necessary to run these light models. In the future, it would be interesting to combine this method with trunk spatial distribution modelling in order to arrive at an even more succinct characterisation of the stands, as well as to be able to model realistic heterogeneous stands.Les modèles de lumière simulent la distribution de l’éclairement sous couvert, en prenant en compte explicitement l’interception du rayonnement incident par le peuplement forestier. En particulier, ils permettent l’analyse de l’influence de la structure du peuplement sur la dynamique de régénération forestière. Malheureusement, la modélisation de peuplements hétérogènes nécessite une caractérisation détaillée des arbres et de la géométrie de leur houppier. Notre but est de rendre ces modèles plus accessibles en proposant une réduction du jeu de données nécessaire. Pour cela nous avons choisi un peuplement feuillu hétérogène et mesuré l’ensemble les données nécessaires à l’alimentation d’un modèle de lumière (tRAYci). Une analyse approfondie de la géométrie des houppiers nous a permis d’établir des relations entre les variables caractéristiques du houppier et le diamètre à 1,30 m des arbres pour chaque essence rencontrée. Elle a également montré une forte plasticité de l’extension latérale des houppiers. Sur cette base, nous avons élaboré un algorithme permettant de prendre en compte la compétition entre houppiers pour l’occupation de l’espace. Cet algorithme consiste à reconstruire chaque houppier en adaptant son extension latérale aux houppiers voisins, en ne connaissant pour chaque arbre que son essence, son diamètre à 1,30 m et sa position. Nous avons comparé cette méthode de reconstruction (anisotrope) à une méthode plus simple (isotrope), en ce qui concerne la qualité de simulation de la distribution de l’éclairement relatif obtenue avec les houppiers reconstruits. Seule l’approche anisotrope a permis d’obtenir une simulation non biaisée de la distribution de l’éclairement à l’échelle de la parcelle. Nous avons testé s’il était possible de se passer complètement des données sur la géométrie des houppiers, en proposant des indices dendrométriques basés sur la distribution spatiale de la surface terrière (aire de la section horizontale du tronc à 1,30 m). Cependant ces indices se sont montrés incapables de prédire la distribution de l’éclairement de façon non biaisée, du fait de l’hétérogénéité structurelle du peuplement. L’établissement de relations entre caractéristiques du houppier et diamètre à 1,30 m semble inévitable, mais la méthode de reconstruction anisotrope proposée permet de limiter au maximum la caractérisation des houppiers et de réduire ainsi de façon très significative les mesures nécessaires à l’alimentation des modèles de lumière. Une perspective de ce travail consisterait à coupler cette méthode avec la modélisation de la distribution spatiale des troncs, pour envisager une caractérisation encore plus sommaire des peuplements, ainsi que la modélisation de peuplements hétérogènes réalistes
