Sobre el κάρυον de Euno y las nociones diodoreas de ἀλήθεια, παρρησία y ἀκρίβεια

    Get PDF
This paper examines a line of argument in modern historiography that tends to discredit the historical value of the Diodorean narrative of the Sicilian Servile Wars by conceiving its author as resembling a novelist. We critici that perspective by analysing the Diodorean notions of the truth, candour, and accuracy. We show that, although Diodorus is not only interested in factual truth, he is strongly committed to it. On the other hand, the context in which he wrote his account, a period in which there was already a bibliographical production concerning the revolts, makes it difficult to imagine that Diodorus had a wide margin for fictional manoeuvre. Moreover, it is supported by what can be compared with Florus, an author presumably of Livian tradition, whose depiction of Eunus’ magical and divinatory qualities is equally negative in terms of fraud.Fil: Piantanida, Fernando Martín. Diodorus Siculus as a source for the study of the sicilian servile wars: ὠφέλεια, ἐπιείκεια and τυχή in his narrative

In this article we address the question of the historical credibility of the Diodorean account of the Sicilian servile wars by reconsidering its author in the light of the contributions of the interpretative current that rehabilitates it. Taking a distance from the Quellenforschung, we study its narrative not as a direct derivation from its supposed source (Posidonius of Apamea), as modern historians have usually done, but putting it in relation to the Historical Library as a whole (its historical method, the themes and conceptions of history that give unity to the work). In this way, we configure the Diodorean account as a source in itself by analyzing it through three central concepts of the author’s thought (the moral benefit for the reader, moderation and fortune) and we argue in favour of its usefulness as a historical source, because its didactic and moralistic purpose does not seem to be developed to the detriment of the events narrated. We propose in the present work, for one hand, to define in socio economic terms to those freeman, on the other hand, to inquire about the causality of their participation in the servile wars, which are related to the development of slavery and the concomitant raise that occurs in the wealth gap in the inside of the freemen from the II century B.C.Fil: Piantanida, Fernando Martín. Is the whole narrative discredited by one anachronism? On the subject of the Roman knights in the Diodorean fragments of the first servile war

The purpose of this article is to analyze the problem of Diodorean anachronism about the Roman knights who act as judges of the provincial governors and its relationship with the historical credibility of the rest of his narrative of the first servile war. In contrast to a hypercritical historiographic position, it is argued that anachronism does not play a central role in the Diodorus’ account. For the revolt is not explained by this erroneous statement, but by the references to the Italian landowners in the island and their bad influence on the Sicilians. On the other hand, by comparing the information of the Diodorean narrative with the evidence from other literary and epigraphic sources, it is argued that Diodorus does not seem to be unaware of the Sicilian reality of the second century BC and that his anachronism does not undermine the historical value of the other preserved fragments.Fil: Piantanida, Fernando Martín. Is a history written by the winners?: About the great slave revolts in the Roman Republic

In this text we address the problem of existing sources and their analysis methodologies for the study of the great slave revolts in the Roman Republic. Our aim is to elucidate the different types of available sources we have and their states of conservation; pointing out the difficulties and heuristic possibilities they present; and analyzing them from a historiographic point of view. Although most of them, and the literary ones in their totality, come from the citizen elite, and consequently they express the point of view of the winners, hostile to the servile revolt, and it imply partiality, distortion and concealment in the historical record, we argue that it is not convenient to exaggerate their bias as a limiting factor of the knowledge of the facts. On the one hand, it is possible to extract valuable information about the rebel slaves from the narrative sources; on the other hand, some material sources produced by the rebels are also preserved. All of which allows us to at least glimpse the vision of the vanquished.Fil: Piantanida, Fernando Martín. Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas; Argentina.
