Using Blockchain technology to create a secure voting system
The main goal of this thesis was to study and implement a voting system using blockchain technology, specifically Ethereum Smart Contract. Such a system is necessary because the voting results can easily be manipulated if the data is not stored in a secured database. The use of blockchain ensures that the data is immutable, thus providing a transparent result after the voting is over.
The theoretical part of this thesis familiarizes the readers with the definition of blockchain, how the data is stored inside the ledger, how the data is verified using blockchain, and how it is impossible for a malicious user to tamper with data inside the network. Moreover, the theoretical part explains the Ethereum ecosystem and how to interact with Ethereum Smart Contracts.
The practical part provides the specification needed to build this application, along with instructions as to how the application is created. The application was created using ReactJS as a Front-end Framework, NodeJS to build the Back-end server, and Solidity language to build the Ethereum Smart Contract.
After the practical part, the outcomes and the results of the application are discussed in the result and the discussion section. Possible considerations and improvements are also discussed, along with one downside of the application. Finally, the conclusion of this thesis discusses how the developed code solves the original tasks of secure voting. One alternative method is also mentioned in this section and why the alternative may not be the better option. Lastly, further improvement, updates, and thoughts are also mentioned in the conclusion as well
Community Forestland Management, Outside Interventions and Local Responses: The case of the Thai ethnic group in the Hanh Dich commune, Que Phong district, Nghe An province, Vietnam
In an increasing interaction between indigenous or isolated ethnic communities and outside actors, a lack of confirmation of local forestland rights is seen as one of the most critical issues. Does the outsiders’ occupancy of land for rent seeking and authoritative patronage for forest management meet the dispossessed people’s aspirations? How and to what extent should local communities be involved in forestland management and play a determining role in their own future? To answer these questions, this research is based on in-depth interviews focusing on the folk traditions, cultural beliefs, customary laws, local knowledge, and comments and recommendations of the local Thai ethnic people and some outsiders residing in the Hanh Dich commune, Que Phong district, Nghe An province, Vietnam. In addition, a number of previous case studies and reports from the archive of SPERI (Social Policy Ecology Research Institute) and its alliance members have been synthesised and analysed.
The essential findings and arguments in this thesis comprise the local Thai people’s cultural traits, chronicles of outside interventions, local responses, and cognitive and methodological approaches to the study of indigenous cultures and their forestlands. It was found that local people have been upholding their holistic and unique perspectives, beliefs, customary laws, traditional organizational and institutional practices and that these inherent values and strengths can contribute effectively to forest protection and improvement of local people’s livelihood. However, it was also observed that the increasing imposition of the mainstream top-down approaches have not recognized or encouraged, that is to say, have undermined local strengths and values. In addition, on the basis of an ethnocentric view, superficial perceptions of the ethnic minority peoples and their values have pervaded in the Vietnamese media. These phenomena raise questions as to cultural rights, human rights, and the quality of the policy making process and law enforcement which are inevitably affected by these ethnocentric views and approaches.
To counteract the hurtful effects of mainstream interventions, local people have responded in a subtle and implicit way. As a result of outside interventions, they have had to find ways to adjust their productive and cultural settings. However, there remain wishes to recover traditional cultural values, especially in the minds of the elders. In an alternative bottom-up approach facilitated by SPERI, the people are stimulated to promote their own institutional and organizational strengths towards their brighter future. In a democratized and decentralized process, community’s land rights and customary rights should be officially recognized and confirmed. But official recognition should not be seen as the final goal, only as a supportive factor while the local community’s strengths and self-enforcement of their rights are determinant. To this end, indigenous peoples need further opportunities for networking, capacity building, and taking part in thorough socio-cultural ethnographic research in order to ensure that they are more truly and fairly represented
Dr Phong Tran
<p>Dr Phong Tran is an Advance Queensland Research Fellow (mid-career level) and Leader of the Interface Science and Materials Engineering Group at the Queensland University of Technology. His group focuses on the development and study of biomaterials for medical devices and tissue repairing or regeneration. His research is highly multidisciplinary and combines fundamental and translational studies at the interface between chemistry, material science, and biology.</p>
<p>Dr Tran has authored more than 85 refereed publications, his articles were published in some of the top journals in his field, including Advanced Drug Delivery Review, Biomaterials, Applied Materials Today, ACS Applied Materials and Interfaces, Biofabrication, Advanced Therapeutics. He has more than 1900 citations and an h-index of 23 (Google scholar 4/2020). Dr Tran has attracted 5.4M in research funding as a Chief Investigator, including 1.4M as a Sole Chief Investigator. He is an Associate Editor in Chief of the International Journal of Nanomedicine.</p>
<p>Dr Tran was the recipient of the Vietnam Education Foundation Fellowship (2005) for his PhD studies at Brown University – one of the 8 Ivy League universities in the USA, Brown University’s Dissertation Fellowship (2009), Stein-Bellet’s Postdoctoral Fellowship (2010, Rhode Island Hospital – USA), McKenzie Research Fellowship (2011, the University of Melbourne – Australia), Vice Chancellor’s Research Fellowship (2015, Queensland University of Technology – Australia) and Advance Queensland Research Fellowship (2017, Queensland Government – Australia). Dr Tran was honoured with multiple recognitions and awards including STAR travel award (Society for Biomaterials, USA), Golden Young Innovator award (Vietnam Fatherland Front, oversea category), Robert Beyer Award (Brown University), Travel Awards (Vietnam Education Foundation), and the Fellowship of the Institution of Engineers Australia.</p>

Copper molybdenum sulfide: a new efficient electrocatalyst for hydrogen production from water
A new inorganic solid state electrocatalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is reported. Highly crystalline layered ternary sulfide copper-molybdenum- sulfide (Cu2MoS4) was prepared by a simple precipitation method from Cu-I and [MoS4](2-) precursors. In aqueous solution and over a wide pH range (pH 0 to 7), this Cu2MoS4 showed very good catalytic activity for HER with an overvoltage requirement of only ca. 135 mV and an apparent exchange current density of 0.040 mA cm(-2) (Tafel slope of ca. 95 mV per decade was found irrespective of the pH value). This Cu2MoS4 catalyst was found to be stable during electrocatalytic hydrogen generation. Tapahtumaturvallisuuden käsikirja turvallisuusvastaavalle
Tämän opinnäytetyön tavoitteena oli kehittää turvallisuusalan yrityksen, Tran Xuan Secure Oy:n, valmiuksia toteuttaa tapahtumaturvallisuutta ammattimaisesti ja järjestelmällisesti. Tämän opinnäytetyön avulla yritys voi suunnitella ja toteuttaa tulevissa toimeksiannoissa turvallisuusjärjestelyjä erilaisissa pienissä ja keskikokoisissa yleisö- ja yksityistilaisuuksissa. Opinnäytetyössä tarkastellaan tapahtumaturvallisuuden keskeisiä osa-alueita, kuten tapahtumapaikan kartoitusta, riskienhallintaa, henkilöstön rooleja ja toimintaohjeita, viranomaisyhteistyötä sekä turvallisuusalan lainsäädäntöä. Lisäksi työssä käsitellään lyhyesti yrityksen asiakashankintaa, markkinointia ja maineenhallintaa, joiden avulla turvallisuusyritys voi rakentaa uskottavuutta, luotettavuutta ja hankkia uusia toimeksiantoja.
Työssä esitellään myös konkreettinen esimerkki opiskelijan aikaisemmasta toteutuneesta toimeksiannosta, jossa hän on itse toiminut turvallisuusvastaavana. Tapahtumaan sisältyi yli 600 hengen turvallisuussuunnittelu ja tämän toteutus. Esimerkin avulla avataan riskien arviointia, henkilöstöresurssien mitoitusta, ensiapuvalmiutta sekä tapahtuman aikaisen toiminnan operatiivista johtamista. Analyysi tulee tarjoamaan käytännön näkökulman siihen, kuinka suunnitelmat siirtyvät paperilta käytännön toteutukseen ja, että minkälaisia kehittämistoimenpiteitä voidaan tunnistaa tulevia toimeksiantoja varten.
Opinnäytetyön kokonaisuutta hyödyntämällä toimeksiantajayritys kykenee kehittämään pitkäjänteisesti omaa toimintaansa, osoittamaan ammattimaisuutensa asiakkaille sekä vahvistamaan asemaansa tapahtumaturvallisuuden palveluntarjoajana. Työ tulee toimimaan jatkossa myös perehdytys- ja koulutusmateriaalina yrityksen omille työntekijöille.
Opinnäytetyön tuotoksena syntyy tapahtumaturvallisuudesta käsikirja, jota voi hyödyntää muistin virkistyksenä kaikissa tulevissa toimeksiannoissa. Opinnäytetyöprosessi toteutettiin huhtikuun ja joulukuun 2025 välisenä aikana. Työssä hyödynnettyä ja analysoitua aikaisempaa toimeksiantoa oli toteutettu ja järjestetty 24.05.2025
