Rising Food Prices and Household Welfare: Evidence from Brazil in 2008
Food price inflation in Brazil in the twelve months to June 2008 was 18 percent, while overall inflation was 5.3 percent. This paper uses spatially disaggregated monthly data on consumer prices and two different household surveys to estimate the welfare consequences of these food price increases, and their distribution across households. Because Brazil is a large food producer, with a predominantly wage-earning agricultural labor force, our estimates include general equilibrium effects on market and transfer incomes, as well as the standard estimates of changes in consumer surplus. While the expenditure (or consumer surplus) effects were large, negative and markedly regressive everywhere, the market income effect was positive and progressive, particularly in rural areas. Because of this effect on the rural poor, and of the partial protection afforded by increases in two large social assistance benefits, the overall impact of higher food prices in Brazil was U-shaped, with the middle-income groups suffering larger proportional losses than the very poor. Nevertheless, since Brazil is 80 percent urban, higher food prices still led to a greater incidence and depth of poverty at the national level.food prices, welfare, poverty, inequality, price change incidence curve, Brazil

Rising food prices and household welfare : evidence from Brazil in 2008
Food price inflation in Brazil in the twelve months to June 2008 was 18 percent, while overall inflation was seven percent. Using spatially disaggregated monthly data on consumer prices and two different household surveys, we estimate the welfare consequences of these food price increases, and their distribution across households. Because Brazil is a large food producer, with a predominantly wage-earning agricultural labor force, our estimates include general equilibrium effects on market and transfer incomes, as well as the standard estimates of changes in consumer surplus. O salto mortal: Ascendino Leite
“Salto Mortal”, by Ascendino Leite, is a work that defies the gravity of conventional literature and takes us on an acrobatic flight through the lives of two trapeze artists, Mario Santelli and Tommy Zane. The narrative, told from Tommy’s perspective, is a deep dive into the raw and colorful reality of the traveling circuses of the 1930s and 1940s. The author, with his masterful skill, weaves a rich and vivid tapestry of circus daily life, interweaving chronicles, poems and testimonies that capture the essence of life under the circus tent. Each page is a balancing act, oscillating between joy and sadness, triumph and tragedy, hope and despair. The romance between Mario and Tommy is portrayed with delicate sensitivity, a somersault into the reader’s heart. Their passion is as palpable as the tension of a tightrope, and the complexity of their feelings is explored with a depth rarely seen in contemporary literature. Ascendino Leite demonstrates a profound understanding of the human condition, and his prose is as sharp as a knife-thrower’s blade. “Salto Mortal” is more than just a book; it is an experience, an invitation to step into the ring and witness the beauty and brutality of circus life. In short, “Salto Mortal” is a literary masterpiece that defies convention and lifts the reader to new heights. It is a book that, like a trapeze artist’s act, must be experienced to be truly appreciated.“Salto Mortal”, de Ascendino Leite, é uma obra que desafia a gravidade da literatura
tragédia, a esperança e o desespero.
mortal no coração do leitor.
leitor a novas alturas.
Trade Liberalization, Employment Flows and Wage Inequality in Brazil
Using nationally representative, economy-wide data, this paper investigates the relative importance of trade-mandated effects on industry wage premiums; industry and economy-wide skill premiums; and employment flows in accounting for changes in the wage distribution in Brazil during the 1988-95 trade liberalization. Unlike in other Latin American countries, trade liberalization appears to have made a significant contribution towards a reduction in wage inequality. These effects have not occurred through changes in industry-specific (wage or skill) premiums. Instead, they appear to have been channelled through substantial employment flows across sectors and formality categories. Changes in the economy-wide skill premium are also important.trade liberalization, inequality, employment flows, Brazil

O método crítico de Sebastião Uchoa Leite
This work aims to analyse the critic method of Sebastião Uchoa Leite, considering some of his essays, of the paper works: Participação da palavra poética (1966), Crítica Clandestina (1986), Jogos e enganos (1995) and Crítica de ouvido (2003). Due to his influences based on the Estruturalism, that was again discussed in the mid of the XX century in Brazil and with great influence of Luiz Costa Lima, Uchoa Leite shows thoughts of appreciation of the work with the language and aesthetics and he looks for an effective method for the written expression, critic and poetic, for the author leaves a legacy for literature. The ideal situation would be the formation of a critic-poet, whose critic and poetic dialogue with similar characteristics, in a circular thougt that, would produce more questions than answers: that s the language game: his method or as it called, by the author, ―antimethod‖.Mestre em Teoria LiteráriaO presente trabalho visa analisar o método crítico literário de Sebastião Uchoa Leite, com base em ensaios de suas seguintes obras: Participação da palavra poética (1966), Crítica Clandestina (1986), Jogos e enganos (1995) e Crítica de ouvido (2003).
Should Cash Transfers Be Confined to the Poor? Implications for Poverty and Inequality in Latin America
This paper compares for 13 Latin American countries the poverty and inequality impacts of cash transfer programs that are given to all children and the elderly (that is, "categorical" transfers), to programs of equal budget that are confined to the poor within each population group (that is, "poverty targeted" transfers). The analysis finds that both the incidence of poverty and the depth of the poverty gap are important factors affecting the relative effectiveness of categorical versus poverty targeted transfers. The comparison of transfers to children and the elderly also supports the view that choosing carefully categories of beneficiaries is almost as important as targeting the poor for achieving a high poverty and inequality impact. Overall, the findings suggest that although in the Latin American context poverty targeting tends to deliver higher poverty impacts, there are circumstances under which categorical targeting confined to geographical regions (sometimes called "geographic targeting") may be a valid option to consider. This is particularly the case in low-income countries with widespread pockets of poverty.cash transfers, targeting, social assistance, poverty
