No full textAntologin Den förnekade kunskapen: En introduktion till Robert Pfallers filosofi, utgiven 2019 på Tankekraft förlag, är ett välkommet inslag på den svenska bokmarknaden. Det saknas visserligen inte ett svenskt engagemang med den österrikiske filosofen och kulturteoretikern Pfallers tänkande, men i relation till en internationell kontext får engagemangets omfattning betraktas som blygsamt. Översättningar av Pfallers böcker till svenska existerar inte i nuläget och sekundärlitteratur av mer systematiskt slag lyser huvudsakligen med sin frånvaro. I egenskap av att vara en antologi helt vikt åt Pfallers filosofi är boken därför unik i ett svenskt sammanhang. Detta tillsammans med att de frågor som Pfaller ställer ingalunda har minskat i relevans gör att antologin framstår som onekligt intressant och värdefull för det intellektuella och kulturkritiskt inriktade samtalet. Som vi ska se har Pfaller nämligen mycket att säga oss om det samhälle vi lever i, inte minst vad gäller vissa tendenser inom den postmoderna teoribildningen, nyliberalismens fortlöpande omstrukturering av samhällets institutioner och vårt vardagliga liv, liksom den moralism som följer i spåren av samhällets individualiseringsprocesser. Som inledningsvis nämndes är en Pfaller-antologi på svenska synnerligen välkommen. Det är en väl sammansatt bok, med intressanta texter och ett förhållandevis brett spektrum av diskussioner om Pfallers tänkande. Boken väckte många frågor och deras svar får förmodligen sökas i Pfallers egna texter. Detta påpekande ska nu betraktas som någonting fördelaktigt eftersom ett av huvudsyftena med en antologi av det här slaget är att stimulera läsarens intresse för det ämne som behandlas och få hen att söka sig vidare. Antologin är en utgångspunkt, en väg in till tänkaren Robert Pfaller snarare än att vara en sammanfattande exposé och som just detta är boken mycket lyckad.</p
Colonization of later life ? Laypersons' and users' agency regarding anti-aging medicine in Germany
No full textAnti-aging medicine is regarded as a significant trend in contemporary Western societies. Foucauldian gerontology provides some of the dominant theoretical perspectives on this trend in social and cultural theory. Proceeding from its interpretation and critique of anti-aging in terms of medicalization and responsibilization of aging, we explore by means of qualitative socio-empirical research how interested laypersons as well as non-professional users in the German context actually perceive of and deal with the medical claims and moral imperatives surrounding anti-aging medicine. The study is based on 12 focus groups and 20 narrative interviews (96 participants all included). They were conducted in Germany between 2011 and 2012, and analyzed by qualitative content analysis as well as comparative sequence analysis. The empirical findings indicate that in everyday life, interested laypersons and non-professional users employ different strategies for dealing with anti-aging products and services, corresponding to different degrees of affirmation and rejection. Four strategies could be identified: (a) medical optimism, (b) preventive maximalism, (c) ritualized well-being, and (d) considerate rejection. Also, each type was problematized and arguments against it were expressed. Overall, these findings show how our participants develop viable strategies to put the relevance of medical knowledge and moral imperatives for their own lives into perspective. This sheds light on laypersons' and users' agency that is, their active role and deliberative space in the uptake, adaptation, and integration of anti-aging into their personal life. These empirical findings contribute to an enriched picture of the actual practice of anti-aging in concrete national and socio-cultural settings. This can help to differentiate the evaluation and thus make its critique more context sensitive, adequate, and targeted. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved
Robert Pfaller: Theorist of public grace
Full text linkAn aesthetics of delegated enjoyment? Sure. An escape from prevailing ideologies? Indeed. An exposure of capitalist commodified happiness? Check. A key to understanding the paradoxes of our cynical-hedonist era? Absolutely. Robert Pfaller’s disquisition on interpassivity is all that its back flap promises, and more. But reading this new book, and rereading earlier publications, make me believe that there is something else brewing in Pfaller’s heterodox writings – something that is perhaps less in line with the image we have of a cultural theorist taking his bearings from Althusser, Lacan, Spinoza, Mannoni and Zizek. Something more – forgive me philosophers – of a sociological nature. I believe we can also read Pfaller as a theorist of public space. Or, given his predilection for graceful acts of enjoyable togetherness, we can read him more specifically as a theorist of public grac
