    No full text

The structural development policies of the last decade see the fundamental opposition between spatially-blind strategies and place-based interventions. This article aims at contributing to the current debate on this topic by analyzing the results of decision-making processes related to the implementation of the National Strategy for Inner Areas (SNAI) considering a specific planning sector: tourism. In particular, the discursive and narrative practices emerging in the planning documents of tourism strategies have been analyzed to identify the elements of coherence between the planning practices – based on the knowledge of the territorial capital – and the actual territorial capital

Tourism Planning and Tourism Development in the Italian Inner Areas:Assessing Coherence in Policy-Making Strategies

    No full text
This contribution explores the outcomes of tourism-related policy-making processes within the framework of the Italian National Strategy for Inner Areas (SNAI), a development strategy launched by the Italian Government in 2012. The strategy aims at improving the living conditions in those territories located far from urban hubs, which have been suffering from progressive social and economic marginalisation. Exploiting the synergies emerging from the combination of anthropological perspectives and socio-statistical techniques, this study performs a content analysis on the planning documents produced by SNAI’s 22 pilot areas, relating to the never-ending debate between spatially blind and place-based development policies. The main objective is to investigate whether and how the planned tourism strategies in these areas are coherent with the policy framework and the guidelines proposed by SNAI. The results highlight different degrees of coherence, identifying how some tourism strategies reflect imprecise knowledge of the territory and the needs of those living there

The Red-backed Shrike Lanius collurio is a passerine bird that hunts from exposed perches on sides of trees or bushes, catching its preys mostly in low grasslands or on the ground. The aim of this study was to test a new sampling method useful to investigate the presence of this species and its diet composition. Three artificial roosts, each combined with a camera trap, were set in a locality of the Tuscan-Emilian Apennine Mountains (Central Italy). The research was carried out in 2016 and 2018 in summer, from June 1th to August 31th. The study place was located 1.100 m above the sea level and was mostly composed of open meadows with scattered bushes, shrubs and some trees. The total number of recorded camera events was 9773 and the species that mostly used the artificial roosts was the Red-backed Shrike (96.85%). Among all images of L. collurio, it was possible to recognize the prey in 476 images. Over 96% of prey items were insects, with prevalence of Orthoptera (42%) and Hymenoptera (14%). About 4% of the prey were Aranea

Rural development and sustainable tourism: a case for family farming in the Alta Murgia National Park (Italy)

The role of protected areas in the preservation and sustainable use of agro-biodiversity, as well as in fostering rural development, is still under-estimated. Starting from the analysis of the different needs of each area (cultural, economic, environmental, and so on), and of how tourism can help to improve the local economy, numerous strategies can be developed, through the active participation of local people to plans and decisions. In order for these strategies to be effective, it is fundamental to create an environment that allows people living in rural areas to overcome all the challenges they face in their efforts to successfully manage their economic activities. This is particularly true with reference to Ffamily farming in protected areas: in the Alta Murgia National Park, in Apulia region (Italy), the Park aAuthority recognizes the important role of farmers in managing the territory of the Park itself, and in fostering rural development. Agriculture can be considered as the activity that, more than any other, has an impact on protected areas, and that, in turn, is affected and influenced by structural factors. It is vital to enable the Alta Murgia National Park and the farmers operating in it to interact in order to develop a “management model” both in the core protected areas of the Park, those with the highest natural value, and in those areas used for agriculture and forestry. An in-depth analysis of the Park agro-ecosystems is the starting point to develop effective governance tools to preserve the agro-pastoral traditions of local communities and foster rural development. The present contribution constitutes the outline of a comprehensive project conducted for the Park authorities, whose results, mostly of descriptive nature, constitute the basis for future steps aimed at fostering local development and effective initiatives in the tourism and agricultural sectors. The mentioned “management model” of rural areas agro-biodiversity is vital to assess the agro-environmental sustainability of farms and promote their multifunctionality, with particular regard to sustainable tourism, leading the Alta Murgia National Park to become a member of the Europarc Federation
