Life cycle environmental and economic impact assessment of pollution mitigation strategies implemented in European pig production systems
Ph. D. Thesis.Pig production systems are significant contributors to environmental impacts arising from livestock and with the increasing demand for pork meat, their environmental footprint cannot be neglected. Many emerging technologies and alternative farm management practices have the potential to improve their environmental performance. However, the implementation of such practices is not always economically viable. Furthermore, their pollution mitigation potential can be sensitive to climate change and geographic variability. The aim of this thesis was to develop a whole-farm environmental abatement cost framework, able to evaluate the environmental and economic performance of pollution mitigation strategies from a life cycle perspective, while accounting for interactions between system components, climate change and spatial variability.
To fully understand and evaluate the environmental impacts associated with European pig production, a whole-farm, environmental Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) was developed on a typical Danish, integrated pig farming system. Through this model, potential environmental impact hotspots were identified related to pig housing and manure management. The abatement potential of a range of housing and manure management related pollution mitigation strategies was then evaluated. The results of this analysis showed that anaerobic digestion of slurry and in-house slurry acidification can significantly reduce the system environmental impact for a great range of impact categories.
Farm profitability was then evaluated through scenarios that simulated the implementation of the proposed pollution mitigation strategies, to determine their cost-effectiveness as stand-alone investments and through their combined implementation. For this purpose, an environmental abatement cost framework was developed by integrating the environmental LCA with a whole-farm economic model that considered capital costs, operating costs and all potential revenue streams. Anaerobic digestion of slurry was the most cost-effective strategy overall, achieving great environmental impact reductions while generating revenue and therefore increasing farm profitability.
The environmental abatement cost framework was then used to investigate the mitigation potential of two pig-cooling strategies that aim for ammonia emission reductions in a Swedish pig-fattening unit. Moreover, the framework was integrated with data on projected climate change for Sweden to evaluate the resilience and cost-effectiveness of these strategies against ambient temperature
increases. Both pig-cooling methods effectively mitigated heat stress related effects on animal performance, and significantly reduce system environmental impact, while improving farm profitability even under an intermediate climate change scenario.
Finally, the effects of geographic variability on the assessment of potential environmental and economic implications associated with the implementation of alternative manure management strategies in Danish pig farming systems were investigated. To achieve this, Geographical Information System (GIS) data and methods were integrated along with the environmental abatement cost framework. In doing so, spatially explicit environmental impact characterisation factors, regional policies that concern pig farming near nature-sensitive areas and agglomeration effects on the economy of the farm were taken into account. The analysis revealed significant effects of location on the cost-effectiveness of several environmental abatement strategies considered.
The methodologies developed and demonstrated in this thesis have the potential to guide decision making regarding farm investments that aim to improve system sustainability in a cost-effective manner.Newcastle University, Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA). Der griechische Gelehrte Georgios Zachariadis und sein Beitrag zum slawischen Schrifttum im 19. Jahrhundert
Among the Greek scholars who lived during the 19th century in the north-eastern Balkans, and also in Central Europe, and by their work contributed to the spiritual development of the Balkan Slavs, pride of place must be given to Georgios Zachariadis. Unfortunately, however, no detailed monograph on Zachariadis exists. On this account the problems that arise concerning the life and activities of this Greek scholar are still many and varied. In his study the author tries to fill one part of this lacuna. At the beginning of the work the following are examined, on the basis of new historical evidence: the date and place of Georgios Zachariadis’ birth, his studies and tenure as teacher in the Greek school at Zemun, the Serbian school at Šabac, and the Greek school in Vienna. The author continues his study by analyzing the various works of Zachariadis, which are written on Old Church^Slavonic, and the translations this Greek scholar made from Greek into Old Church Slavonic. Finally, the extent of Georgios Zachariadis’ contribution to Slavonic letters is made clear

D2.7 Report of co-production of ENVISION services

This report presents the implementation of the coproduction processes. Thus, it outlines the outcomes of the series of consultations with the ENVISION end users in regard to their views and comments on the development of the ENVISION services. Coproduction can support uptake by end users by addressing issues such as ease of use, trust (evidence-based tool), habit and relevance to user, and potentially mitigate issues around lack of expertise in using EO data and remote sensing technologies, supporting the development of a platform accessible to all users and leading them through areas requiring new skills or technical expertise.

The evaluation of the effect of PAMAM dendrimers in the solubility of lmiquimod
Charles University, Faculty of Pharmacy in Hradec Králové Department of Pharmaceutical Technology Supervisor: Dr. Georgios Paraskevopoulos, Ph.D. Consultant: Eleni Panoutsopoulou Author: Mgr. Thu Thao Truongová Title of the thesis: The evaluation of the effect of PAMAM dendrimers in the solubility of Imiquimod Dendrimers are highly branched polymeric compounds with defined properties. They are used as a nanoparticle delivery system, however concurrently they have significant potential in enhancing the solubility of poorly water soluble drugs. Dendrimers work as drug carriers either by encapsulating the drug in their branched internal structure or they create interactions with the drug in the outer layer via terminal functional groups. The aim of this work was to evaluate the effect of polyamidoamine (PAMAM) dendrimers on the solubility of the hydrophobic drug imiquimod. Solutions of zero, first, second and third generation dendrimers were prepared at six different concentrations. During the experiment, the pH of the solutions was measured before and after addition of excess amount of imiquimod. Subsequently, analysis was performed by high-performance liquid chromatography. The measured results show that the first generation of PAMAM dendrimers is able to increase the solubility of imiquimod in...C2-Internal Abstrakt Univerzita Karlova, Farmaceutická fakulta v Hradci Králové Katedra Farmaceutické technologie Školitel: Dr. Georgios Paraskevopoulos, Ph.D. Konzultant: Eleni Panoutsopoulou Autor: Mgr. Effect of PAMAM dendrimers on the solubility and the skin permeation of flufenamic acid
Univerzita Karlova, Farmaceutická fakulta v Hradci Králové Katedra Farmaceutické technologie Školitel: Dr. Georgios Paraskevopoulos, Ph.D. Autor: Lenka Novotná Název diplomové práce: Vliv PAMAM dendrimerů na rozpustnost a kožní permeaci kyseliny flufenamové Kyselinu flufenamovou (FFA) patří do skupiny nesteroidních antiflogistik. Skupina těchto pomocných látek přechodně snižuje propustnost kožní bariéry a usnadňuje transdermální podání léčiv. Mezi další výhodné vlastnosti patří výborná...Charles University, Faculty of Pharmacy in Hradec Králové Department of Pharmaceutical Technology Supervisor: Dr. Georgios Paraskevopoulos, Ph.D. Author: Lenka Novotná Title of the thesis: Flufenamic acid (FFA) belongs to the group of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Medicines from the group of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are the most widely used drugs worldwide. The range of uses is very extensive. The effect of the drugs is anti- inflammatory, they also serve against pain and fever. The problem with their use, especially orally, lies in the large number of side effects. To reduce the incidence of adverse effects, FFA can be administered topically. The transfer of substances through the skin barrier is demanding. The substances must meet certain criteria so that the molecules are able to penetrate through the hydrophilic and at the same time hydrophobic part of the lamellar lipid multilayer contained in the epidermis. To improve the solubility of FFA in water, we used the advantageous properties of poly(amidoamine) (PAMAM) dendrimers. PAMAM dendrimers are spherical macromolecules with a very well-organized structure. They work well as skin permeation accelerators or skin enhancers. A group of these excipients temporarily reduces the skin barrier and facilitates the transdermal...Department of Pharmaceutical TechnologyKatedra farmaceutické technologieFarmaceutická fakulta v Hradci KrálovéFaculty of Pharmacy in Hradec Králov
