The effect of pH, dissolved humic substances, and ionic composition on the transfer of iron and phosphate to particulate size fractions in epilimnetic lake water.

No full text
Transformations of dissolved iron and phosphate to particulate material (>0.2 \mu m) were investigated by adding ^55 FeCl_3, and ^32 PO_4^3- to pH adjusted epilimnetic lake water samples of contrasting ionic strengths and dissolved humic substances (DHS) concentrations. The distributions of these tracers between particulate size fractions in samples without appreciable DHS after 24 h of dark incubation varied markedly over the pH range 4-8. The effect of pH on the movement of ^55 Fe and ^32 P to particulate size fractions in clear-water samples depended on the ionic strength. Over the same pH range, the presence of DHS suppressed the movement of ^55 Fe and ^32 P to particulate size fractions. There was little difference between low and high ionic strength DHS-rich samples. The capability of DHS to maintain added ^55 Fe and ^32 P in solution (<0.2 \mu m) was confirmed by simultaneous measurements of precipitation losses.<br/

Stratified medicine for cancer therapy

No full text
As knowledge of the biological processes underlying malignant transformation becomes increasingly sophisticated, apparently similar diseases can be redefined according to the critical disrupted biological pathways and networks. The key genetic changes in most cancers can be mapped to one of a relatively few pathways, making it possible to classify tumours by their abnormal pathways and to identify potentially treatable--'druggable'--targets within these. The aim of the stratified approach to cancer therapy is to improve the effectiveness, tolerability and affordability of novel therapeutic agents

Two photographs of Springfield College's Dr. Peter Karpovich, his wife Dr. Josephine Rathbone and their friends and colleges (July 30,1963). The photographs were believed to be taken in the backyard of Dr. Peter Karpovich and Dr. Josephine Rathbone's house. Under each photograph, there are names of the people in the photograph. The top photo shows (left to right): Atul Parekh, Dr. P.V. Karpovich, Mrs. Karpovich, Dr. Charles M. Tipton. Father Andrew Mullen 1790-1818: a study in early nineteenth century spirituality

No full text
This thesis is laid out in three parts: Part I. The life and death of Andrew Mullen. The life is based, to a large extent, on a long letter to his mother, Catherine Mullen, dated 7 January 1810. The letter gives a definite insight into his spirituality based on his membership of the Archconfraternity of the Blessed Sacrament. There is a hint that he had a premonition of an early death. Part II. The burial of Andrew Mullen and the immediate cult to him This is based on documentary evidence. Part III. Most of this part is a catalogue of testimonies taken from 1993 onwards. Then there is the conclusion on the popular devotion to Andrew Mullen stressing the theological aspect of the subject. In the course of writing the thesis it was decided to separate the documentary evidence from the oral tradition. This was advantageous in developing the thesis, and the documents provided a secure basis for the oral tradition. Two pieces of information were found in March 1997. They are death notices: 2 January 1819, The Leinster Journal and 7 January 1819, The Car low Morning Post. There is a slight discrepancy between the two on the date of his death. Also this discrepancy shows a slight difference from the date of the tombstone

FOREIGN GAS BROADENED WIDTHS OF CO2CO_{2} AT 9.4 AND 10.4μ\mum

Author Institution: Department of physics, The Ohio State UniversityThe pressure broadened widths of lines of carbon dioxide broadened by oxygen and dry air have been estimated by and analysis of the 9.4 and 10.4μ\mum bands using methods described previously1previously^{1}. The data were obtained with a commercial Nicolet F.T.S. of resolution approximately 0.06cm10.06 cm^{-1}, a path length of 130 meters, and pressures of approximately one atmosphere. Spectra were obtained over a temperature range of about 60C60^{\circ} C, including room temperature. Preliminary estimates for O2O_{2} broadening are consistent with the few previous results2,3results^{2,3}. In particular it has been found that the temperature dependence (To/T)γ(T_{o}/T)\gamma is more satisfactorily modeled with an exponent γ\gamma of approximately. 75. 1^{1}M. HOKE and J.
