Río Ciudad Monterrey: Space Production, Ecology and Culture

    No full text
The book proceeds from the Río Ciudad interdisciplinary study conducted at the CRGS of the Universidad de Monterrey. Directed by Peter G. Rowe, Roberto Pasini and Patricio Ortiz Silva, the study addresses the status of the Santa Catarina River within the metropolitan area of Monterrey, Mexico and the relationship between the two entities. Presenting a characterization of the urban segment of the river through the metropolitan area and four future scenarios of transformation, the study envisions programs aiming to increase sustainability and public space provision, with emphasis on improving the identity of the city

The book is organized in five sections. The first is a general introduction with an overview of the work conducted. The second section provides a historical analysis of the urban genesis and metropolitan evolution of the five-million people settlement of Monterrey. A hybrid apparatus of natural platform and anthropic structure has been forming through the incessant dialectics between the Río Santa Catarina corridor and the physical construction of the built infrastructure. The third section provides a contemporary characterization of the area by identifying the most relevant systems, urgent problems, and latent potentials. The fourth section presents a set of scenarios of strategic action cast by the work team into the possible future of the area. A fifth section synthesizes general conclusions. The study envisions programs aiming to increase sustainability and public space provision, with emphasis on improving the identity of the city

Two new species of Indigofera (Fabaceae: Faboideae) from western Queensland

    No full text
Two new species of Indigofera are described from western Queensland, one of which also extends into the Northern Territory. Indigofera erubescens Peter G. Wilson & Rowe, is a species sometimes confused with I. brevidens and, to a lesser extent, I. helmsii but readily distinguished from both by its rather small, red flowers; Indigofera queenslandica Peter G. Wilson & Rowe, is a species superficially similar in parts of its range to I. leucotricha in having a rather dense, greyish indumentum. Both species are illustrated and their conservation status discussed

Design Thinking and Storytelling in Architecture

    No full text
169 p.This book offers a systematic account of the process of designing in architecture. Design thinking can be regarded as a fundamentally different way of knowing the world and a particular form of addressing creative problems. In this publication, the authors undertake to explore multiple and often controversial theoretical stances on the topic. Underlying principles of inquiry are present in all designing and a process takes place involving empathy or listening carefully before storytelling. Prototyping and testing of solutions are illustrated in the book with many examples, seen from different vantage points. In short, design thinking is a way of knowing and enabling being in the world and leads to a better understanding of architecture. Brilliant tour de force through several centuries of design thinking Peter G. Rowe is the internationally renowned author of some thirty books Lavishly illustrated volume with attractive graphic design ; This book offers a systematic account of the process of designing in architecture. Brillante Tour de Force durch mehrere Jahrhunderte des Entwurfsdenkens Peter G. A new species, Indigofera centralis Peter G. Wilson & Rowe, is described from Central Australia, west of the Finke Gorge National Park in the Northern Territory; it resembles some other inland species (I. fractiflexa, I. gilesii, I. warburtonensis and I. helmsii) but differs most conspicuously by the relatively larger flowers

    Design Thinking

In Design Thinking Peter Rowe provides a systematic account of the process of designing in architecture and urban planning. He examines multiple and often dissimilar theoretical positions whether they prescribe forms or simply provide procedures for solving problems?as particular manifestations of an underlying structure of inquiry common to all designing. Over 100 illustrations and a number of detailed observations of designers in action support Rowe\u27s thesis

The role of Plasmodium falciparum var genes in malaria in pregnancy

    No full text
Sequestration of Plasmodium falciparum-infected erythrocytes in the placenta is responsible for many of the harmful effects of malaria during pregnancy. Sequestration occurs as a result of parasite adhesion molecules expressed on the surface of infected erythrocytes binding to host receptors in the placenta such as chondroitin sulphate A (CSA). Identification of the parasite ligand(s) responsible for placental adhesion could lead to the development of a vaccine to induce antibodies to prevent placental sequestration. Such a vaccine would reduce the maternal anaemia and infant deaths that are associated with malaria in pregnancy. Current research indicates that the parasite ligands mediating placental adhesion may be members of the P. falciparum variant surface antigen family PfEMP1, encoded by var genes. Two relatively well-conserved subfamilies of var genes have been implicated in placental adhesion, however, their role remains controversial. This review examines the evidence for and against the involvement of var genes in placental adhesion, and considers whether the most appropriate vaccine candidates have yet been identified
