    No full text
This paper describes the general design of the SAVE survey: the design of the questionnaire, inter-viewer and interviewee motivation, and the sampling designs of the various subsamples collected in 2001 and 2003. It discusses the representativeness of the data, explains the construction of weights, and provides probit regressions to analyse potential selectivity problems. The paper finishes by discussing implications for the use of the SAVE data in various estimation procedures.

Publishing antiquities in the vernacular. The cases of Elias Ashmole and Peter Lambeck

    No full text
The essay argues that different attitudes towards the use of vernacular languages as means for scholarly communication were reflected in different uses of the past for the celebration of one's national identities. The aim of this essay is to compare the publication agendas of two eminent seventeenth- century English and German antiquaries, namely, Elias Ashmole (1617-92) and Peter Lambeck (1628-80). The former founded the first public museum in the British Isles, the Ashmolean in Oxford in 1683; the latter was Keeper of the Imperial Library in Vienna between 1662 and 1680
