Perry Mason: the case of the legendary lawyer

    No full text

A Content Analysis of Mexican and Mexican American Representation in "Perry Mason" (2020)

This thesis uses content analysis to observe Mexican and Mexican American representation in the cable/streaming program Perry Mason (2020). This thesis posed three questions: (1) How do contemporary representations of the 1930's depict Mexican and Mexican Americans in the streaming series, Perry Mason? (2) How are Mexican and Mexican Americans portrayed in the series? (3) What Mexican and Mexican American historical markers are present in the landscape of Perry Mason? The observations from this study found that the reboot of Perry Mason (2020) had Mexican and Mexican American characters while the original series did not. Furthermore, the percentage of Mexicans and Mexican Americans found in the reboot exceeded the percentage of Mexican and Mexican Americans living in Los Angeles County during the 1930's, per the census (U.S Census Bureau, 1932). The data from this study also suggests that Mexican and Mexican American characters are portrayed positively, but not accurately in regard to the occupations they held during this time frame. Lastly, three historical markers that would have impacted the Mexican and Mexican American experience during this time frame were used to analyze the show: (1) the Alien Labor Act, (2) repatriation/deportation incidents, and (3) Mexicans and Mexican American's involvement with the U.S. military. This study only found one of these historical events documented in the series: Mexicans and Mexican American involvement with the U.S. military

This article is an analysis of the cultural phenomenon Perry Mason, created by lawyer/author Erle Stanley Gardner in 1933, and which was the subject of a television reboot in 2020. The study, which tackles the cultural dimension in the field of English for specific purposes, focuses on intertextual references to Perry Mason that serve to explore the norms governing the characterisation of this hero. We show that the various rewritings make it possible to revisit the formula show as a genre, sometimes to pay homage to this character with mythical status, sometimes to deconstruct its manichean personality. Secondly, we analyse the inspirational properties of this fictional character for the legal community. Finally, we show that this mythical FASP has contributed to the creation of specialised terminology that blurs the boundaries between fiction and reality

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    Get PDF
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
