A case of segmental neurofibromatosis
A 66 year-old man with neurofibromas occurring only on the left upperarm is described. This rare form of neurofibromatosis (of which only 15 cases have been reported) can be ascribed to type V according to Riccardi's classification, improved by Roth
STUDIO SULL'EFFICACIA DI UNO SCHERMO SOLARE A BASE DI METOSSICINNAMATO E DIBENZOILMETANO
The effectiveness of a sunscreen containing methoxy cynnamate and dibenzoylmethane has been evaluated in 12 healthy volunteers. For each subject, two symmetric areas of bottoms (one of them previously receiving the sunscreen) have been irradiated with a bank of three 400 W metal halide lamps, emitting in the UVB range (max at 300 nm), in order to detect the Minimal Erythema Dose (MED). The MED values have been determined by a color analyzer. The results have shown that, at least in the UVB range, the MED values of the sunscreen-protected skin areas were 3-8 fold higher than that of the unprotected areas
Polymorphous light eruption: Experimental reproduction of isomorphic skin lesions by a new method
Using a new phototest procedure, experimental lesions have been elicited in twelve patients with clinical diagnosis of polymorphous light eruption (PLE), papular type. A skin area (5 x 10 cm), in which the patient had had genuine eruption of PLE, has been daily irradiated with polychromatic UVB (80% of MED) + UVA (25 J/sq cm) + VIS (170 J/sq cm). All patients showed a papular eruption after 3-7 irradiative sessions. No response was observed on the control area receiving only polychromatic UVA (60J/sq cm) in repeated sessions (up to ten), according to Holzle's method. Our results suggest that the interaction among different wavelengths could play an important role in the pathogenesis of PLE
Malignant melanoma of the soft parts
A case of a 77-old woman with a melanoma of soft parts is reported. The blue-greyish nodule, 4 cm in diameter, had a smooth and regular skin surface. The microscopic picture showed the presence in the dermis of atypical round or spindle-shaped cells with clear cytoplasm and vescicular nuclei and also the presence of melanin. The detection of S-100 protein was positive. The patient died 8 months after the surgical excision of the nodule. The autoptic findings showed several cerebral metastases with same histologic characteristics of the primary tumor
Determination of light transmission through summer clothes
A great number of dermatological patients, in particular during summer time, need photo-protection measures. Nevertheless there are no scientific data on the filtrating capacity of summer clothes. In this study the transmittion of visible light and ultraviolet radiation, UVB and UVA light, has been measured through various samples of common summer clothing fabrics. The results show that type and structure (warf and woof) of tissues are more important than colour in determining the protective nature of the material
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
