A SYSTEMATIC REVIEW AND META ANALYSIS OF HOME-SCHOOL INTERVENTIONS FOR CHILDREN WITH ATTENTION DEFICIT HYPERACTIVITY DISORDER

    No full text
Symptoms of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) are pervasive and impair functioning across settings. Though effective interventions designed for school or for home settings are well established, collaborative cross-setting interventions for children with ADHD have yet to be systematically reviewed. The present study conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis consisting of eight studies which were analyzed most prominently in (a) measures used, (b) child outcomes in functional impairment, social/emotional/behavioral functioning, and academic achievement, and (c) parent and teacher outcomes. Measures included in study are described, the majority were valid and reliable. Measures included in the review lacked consistency in which constructs they measured, which limited analysis. Improvements were reported across all outcomes with varying effect sizes. Significant improvements were reported in half of the overall outcomes for children’s social, emotional, and behavioral functioning and academic achievement. Select parent and teacher outcomes reported some improvements, most significantly in areas of knowledge, skill, and performance. Overall, meta-analysis results indicate a medium effect, though not statistically significant given small sample size. Limitations and directions for future research are discussed

Thank you.MspJI is a novel modification-dependent restriction endonuclease that specifically recognizes cytosine C5 modification (methylation or hydroxymethylation) in DNA and cleaves at a constant distance (N12/N16) away from the modified cytosine site. The biochemical characterization of MspJI and several homologs, including FspEI, LpnPI, AspBHI, RiaI, and SgrTI is presented in this thesis. Each displays its own sequence context preference, favoring different nucleotides flanking the modified cytosine. Despite the difference in the recognition sequence, the MspJI family enzymes display similarities in their other properties, such as the distance from the modified cytosine to the cleavage site, stimulation of cleavage by a short DNA oligonucleotide containing the recognition site and the ability to produce a double strand break in molecules with a single recognition site. Here, the possibility of multimerization as part of the mechanism by which these enzymes are able to display those properties is discussed. In addition, by cleaving on both sides of fully modified CpG sites, these enzymes allow the extraction of 32-base long fragments around the modified sites from the genomic DNA, providing powerful tools for direct interrogation of the epigenome. For example, Rial , an enzyme that prefers mcwG but not mCpG sites, generates digestion patterns that differ between plant and mammalian genomic DNA, highlighting the difference between their epigenomic patterns. Furthermore, deep sequencing of the digested DNA fragments generated from these enzymes provides a feasible method to map the modified sites in the genome.2999-01-0

La soya devora campesinos e indígenas en América del Sur

    No full text
The author demonstrates how the expansion of transgenic soy in South America is modifying the economies and the societies of vast rural regions. Its massive cultivation expels farmers and native peoples out of their ancestral lands, and the new infrastructural installations lead to ports shipping the goods to the avid European and Asian markets. This recent process of agricultural transnationalization presses toward the primarization of South American economies, concentrates property and income, and impoverishes the national market. It is a form of globalization that does not favor the societies involved and it assaults their diverse ecological environments

Dialectical behavior therapy skills training for emotional problem solving for adolescents (DBT STEPS-A) in urban school contexts: a mixed methods study

The global population's rising mental health needs have resulted in myriad efforts to increase accessibility to intervention and support services, particularly those offered in school settings. Researchers and practitioners are increasingly exploring novel approaches to prevent and reduce the likelihood of mental health issues rather than its traditional emphasis on intervening when problems have already emerged. The recently developed Dialectical Behavior Therapy Skills Training for Emotional Problem Solving for Adolescents (DBT STEPS-A) is an extension of the empirically-supported DBT interventions and in effect, brings strong clinical therapy to universal school settings. The current study utilizes a mixed-methods research design to explore a pilot implementation of DBT STEPS-A in an urban public school context across two sixth grade student cohorts (i.e., Study 1 and Study 2). Three broad research questions addressed students’ quantitative gain scores and two qualitative dimensions of social validity (i.e., perceived acceptability and importance of effects). Although most data was collected for only Study 1 students, information pertaining to students’ social validity perceptions of DBT STEPS-A’s effects was gathered from both student cohorts at distinct data collection points. Based on the analyses conducted, results revealed no statistically significant improvements in students’ overall psychopathology and emotion regulation scores at post-intervention. However, qualitative analysis of social validity data regarding student perceptions of the importance of DBT STEPS-A revealed that both Study 1 and Study 2 students perceived beneficial outcomes over the course of the intervention including improvements in their emotion regulation skills. In addition, qualitative data suggested that Study 1 students perceived several DBT STEPS-A's activities and/or procedures as acceptable, although many suggestions were made for improving and enhancing this intervention. Study findings highlight the importance of acquiring competencies related to designing and implementing SEL programs, while considering student voice. Study findings contribute to DBT STEPS-A's preliminary program implementation literature and provide insight as to the initial effectiveness and social validity of the intervention including the perceived core desirable features of DBT STEPS-A and the importance of their effects among urban, low-income middle school students. Implications and limitations of this study are recognized.Psy.D.Includes bibliographical reference

    Harnessing gene drive

When scientists alter the genome of an organism, we typically reduce its ability to reproduce in the wild. This limitation has prevented researchers from rendering wild insects unable to spread disease, programing pests to ignore our crops, using genetics to precisely remove environmentally damaging invasive species, and much more. Gene drive occurs when a vertically transmitted genetic element reliably spreads through a population over generations despite providing no reproductive advantage to each host organism. Until recently, scientific efforts to take advantage of this natural phenomenon achieved only limited success. The advent of CRISPR genome editing has dramatically accelerated efforts to harness gene drive. Small groups of scientists may now be capable of unilaterally altering entire wild populations, and through them, the shared environment. Determining whether, when, and how to develop gene drive interventions responsibly will be a defining challenge of our time. Here we describe capabilities, safeguards, applications, and opportunities relevant to gene drive technologies

    Driving towards ecotechnologies

© 2018 The Author(s). Published by Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group. The prospect of using genetic methods to target vector, parasite, and reservoir species offers tremendous potential benefits to public health, but the use of genome editing to alter the shared environment will require special attention to public perception and community governance in order to benefit the world. Public skepticism combined with the media scrutiny of gene drive systems could easily derail unpopular projects entirely, especially given the potential for trade barriers to be raised against countries that employ self-propagating gene drives. Hence, open and community-guided development of thoughtfully chosen applications is not only the most ethical approach, but also the most likely to overcome the economic, social, and diplomatic barriers. Here we review current and past attempts to alter ecosystems using biological methods, identify key determinants of social acceptance, and chart a stepwise path for developers towards safe and widely supported use

The detached house is not the houseThe common modern detached house is much indebted architecturally to the imagination of the aristocratic follies of the eighteenth century and the hygienist theories of the nineteenth century. They both are responsible for creating a solitary object around which the owner can circulate. The detached house’s space occupation (that the author has already studied extensively) corresponds perfectly to the quiet life sought by its inhabitant and the reluctance of this inhabitant towards adjacent townhouses. Yet, this form of housing consumes too much of building land, makes this land scarce and expensive while complicating all the networks, which serve it. Understanding the hidden mechanisms of attractive cultural construction that is the detached home (and not only the "ideology against the detached housing ") can help the recognition (re-cognition) of the cohousing, with small garden, as an alternative to detached house in the context of urban growth.
