The Psychosocial Effects of Having a Sibling with Autism Spectrum Disorder

    No full text
Siblings play an important role in one another’s overall development; thus, the sibling relationship is an important subsystem within the family unit. However, in families where one child has an autism spectrum disorder diagnosis, the dynamics between siblings may be different than in families with typically developing children due to the associated deficits in communication. Therefore, this mixed-method study examined the perceptions of six typically developing children regarding their relationship with a sibling with autism. Parents were heterosexual couples, and families were white and mostly middle class. Semi-structured interviews and questionnaires regarding the sibling relationship were administered to the typically developing child. Identification of major themes followed by focused coding was conducted to capture the essence of what was said and to categorize the most frequent themes. Overall, typically developing children highlighted both positive and negative features of their relationships, for example play, feeling proud, embarrassment, and anger. Additionally, children seemed to be at a loss for coping strategies they considered helpful, perhaps due to their own poor and/or developing emotional regulation skills. The findings emphasize the need to support typically developing children and their personal and social development

As siblings play an important role in one another’s cognitive, affective, behavioral, and social development, the sibling relationship is an important subsystem within the family unit. However, in families where one child has an Autism Spectrum Disorder diagnosis, the dynamics between family members may be different due to the associated deficits in communication. Therefore, the purpose of this mixed method study was to explore the perceptions of six typically developing children with a sibling with autism and their parents. Semi-structured interviews and questionnaires were used for both parents and the typically developing child, which allowed for an in-depth investigation into the sibling relationship. Identification of major themes followed by focused coding was conducted in order to capture the essence of what was said and to categorize the most frequent themes. Overall, both parents and typically developing children had positive and negative things to say about the relationship. Additionally, typically developing children seem to be at a loss for coping strategies that they consider helpful, perhaps due to their own poor emotional regulation skills. This study emphasizes the need to support typically developing children and their development, as well as parents. Parents also identified other themes beyond the sibling relationship such as the perceived poor quality of public services received, the school experience, and their reactions towards the diagnosis

Mothers\u27 Experiences of Obtaining a Diagnosis and Support for their Child with Autism Spectrum Disorder

    No full text
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder associated with communication, social, and behavioural challenges. A challenge faced by parents of a child with ASD is the process of obtaining a diagnosis and services for their child. In this collective case study, we interviewed six mothers in a large Canadian city who had at least one child with an ASD diagnosis. We asked about their experience obtaining a formal diagnosis, support, and how they perceived their children’s educational experience. Mothers highlighted the difficulties and barriers they encountered, as well the importance of support. Implications of such findings are discussed

Sibling Bonds as Protective Factors in Childhood Adversity: A Protocol for a Meta-Analysis of the Moderating Effect of Sibling Relationship Quality

    No full text
Children who experience adversities early in life are at heightened risk for both immediate and long-term psychological challenges. Adverse experiences are widespread and are consistently associated with increased risks of physical and psychological difficulties. Resilience, the ability of individuals and systems to adapt successfully to adversity, must be considered across multiple levels, including individual, family, and community contexts. One potential resilience factor is sibling relationships. Warm and supportive sibling bonds provide a sense of security, promote socioemotional development, and are linked to better psychological adjustment, potentially mitigating the negative effects of early adversity. Given the widespread prevalence of adversity, as well as their profound impact on individual well-being, it is essential to identify protective and mitigating factors that can buffer against negative outcomes. One such potential factor is sibling relationship quality, which may play a moderating role in how children cope with adversity. This meta-analysis aims to synthesize existing research to evaluate the extent to which positive sibling relationships mitigate the effects of adverse or stressful experiences on child outcomes. Specifically, the following research questions will be addressed: 1. To what extent does sibling relationship quality moderate the effects of adversity on child outcomes? 2. How do sibling characteristics (e.g., age gap, birth order, gender) and the type of adverse exposure influence the moderating role of sibling relationship quality
