It is with great pleasure that we announce the presentation of the first exhibition | visual symphony ‘Mountains Up-Side Down’ of the international artist-led project Settlements, organised and curated by a group of artists from Cyprus and abroad, consisting of: Vicky Pericleous (CY), Burchhard Garlichs, (DE), Demetris Neokleous (CY), Kyriakos Kallis (CY), Michael Nicolaides (DE), Nika Span (DE/SI) Panikos Tempriotis (CY), Stephanos Karambambas (GR).
This artist-led research project focuses on the development and curation of art contexts, situations and exhibitions that engage with multiple mediums, technologies and modalities, in order to re-negotiate spatiotemporal disputes around a variant of biopolitical landscapes, and in respect to their currency today.
This first exhibition Mountains Up-Side Down, is proposed as an open-ended site specific installation in the spaces of Aeriko and Rodous’s Watermill in the village of Galata, which stresses physically and perceptually, across Klarios or Karkotis river and meets contextually the communities of the wider region and lands of Troodos area.
These places are re-approached as spaces of alternative expressions and transformative contemplations on hetero-temporalities and on patterns of life, death and re-birth in respect to the biopolitical landscape(s) of the wider region and of the Troodos’ communities and territories; looking into how this landscape grows, rhizomatically1 elsewhere and how it interacts with the Other.
The installation of the art works in these territories, both indicates and seeks the rising of an –another- community. However temporal within the context of a visual exhibition, it embeds at the same time, witnesses of the biopolitical layers, narratives and spatiotemporal remains of the valley of Solea and Troodos area. The exhibition and the wider project moves from a local to a trans-local development and understanding. It wishes to develop nets and patterns of alternative economies of life and production within todays’ worlds that are able to re-imagine new risings and other spaces of care and ways of engaging (with) and inclusion of various communities and places.Cultural Services of the Ministry of Deputy-Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Cypru
Un «Pseudo-Galien» dans le commentaire de Stephanos d'Athènes aux Aphorismes d'Hippocrate
REB 56 1998 France p. 5-78
Wanda Wolska-Conus, Un «Pseudo-Galien» dans le commentaire de Stéphanos d'Athènes aux Aphorismes d'Hippocrate : Ό Νεώτερος 'Εξηγητής. — Reviewing carefully the forty-three passages which Stéphanos ascribes to Galen, the author reaches the conviction that this attribution is erroneous. Are not the passages in question to be attributed to the exeget called the «Newer Exeget», whom Stéphanos asserts «he is explaining him» ?Passant minutieusement en revue les quarante-trois passages attribués par Stephanos à Galien, l'auteur arrive à la conviction qu'il s'agit là de fausses attributions. Les passages incriminés ne reviennent-ils pas plutôt à l'exégète dit «le Nouvel Exégète» que Stephanos affirme «être en train d'expliquer» ? La question reste ouverte.Wolska-Conus Wanda. Masonry Buldings' Seismic Failures
The document is a teamwork coordinated by Stephanos E. Dritsos, and material has been shared
between the authors. However, the proposal of each chapter was drafted by a leading author, in
the following chapter order: Jon Moseley (Chapter 1), Andreas Lampropoulos (Chapter 2), Eftychia
Apostolidi (Chapter 3), and Christos Giarlelis (Chapter 4).
This document concerns reinforced concrete buildings and masonry buildings. It attempts to
categorize the types of seismic failures, explain the reasons of each failure, and propose good
practices to avoid such a failure. Suggestions for pre-earthquake strengthening of weak structures
or elements together with post-earthquake retrofitting measures when damage has occurred are
also presented. This document is intended as a comprehensive educational reference textbook
to benefit the engineering society and our society as a whole community. In addition, it is aimed
at all classes of engineers from novice to expert, as well as students, and it could be a unique document
that may be of considerable benefit to the IABSE community and practicing civil and
structural engineers in general. It may have considerable impact in developing countries where
the infrastructure is still being built, because it addresses, among other things, non-engineered
construction practice. The document’s purpose is to give background information, stimulate
focus on the earthquake problem, extend knowledge concerning earthquakes, and to give ideas
and reassurance to those faced with the task of building a safer future for the public and to save
lives
Cholangiocarcinoma cell lines: proteomic analysis and enhancing response to chemotherapy.
MD (Res)Cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) is a rare cancer with a poor prognosis. Much of medical
research has focused on investigating cancers with a higher incidence and little focus
has been devoted to this disease.
The aim of this thesis was to perform a protein analysis of CCA and cholangiocyte cell
lines. Differences between immortalised cancer and normal cells were sought in
order to identify potential therapeutic targets and/or diagnostic tools.
A variety of CCA cell lines were used, reflecting both intra and extrahepatic disease.
The different subtypes of CCA through the developed and developing world are also
represented so differences were also sought between them. Proteomic analysis was
performed using DIGE with subsequent spot selection. Identified spots were
extracted and processed using mass spectrometry.
In addition, available chemotherapy agents were tested in vitro against the same cell
lines to check for their action and how this could be enhanced. A benzodiazepine
receptor antagonist (PK11195) was used to demonstrate apoptosis promotion in the
presence of established cytotoxic agents (gemcitabine, etoposide, 5 fluorouracil and
cisplatin). Cytotoxic assays were carried out using the SRB (Sulphorhodamine B)
assay. Cell lines were tested for benzodiazepine receptor status using qRTPCR and
response was correlatedLondon Bridge Hospital (HCA

Migrated fish bone induced liver abscess: medical management
Liver abscess secondary to a migrated ingested foreign body is an uncommon condition where early diagnosis helps management and improves prognosis. Abscess drainage with removal of the foreign body is the recommended management. We report the successful management of a patient with a liver abscess from a migrated fishbone that was treated medically with the foreign body left in situ
Le monastère de la Source à Constantinople et ses deux recueils de miracles. Entre hagiographie et patriographie
The monastery of the Virgin of the Source (Θετόκος τῆς Πηγῆς) at Constantinople, remarkable for both its duration and its renown, is known particularly from two collections of miracles compiled at a great distance in time from each other : one in the second half of the tenth century and the other in the last years of the reign of Andronicus II Palaeologus (1282-1328). In tracing the monastery’s history from its origins (6th c.) until the fall of Constantinople (1453) the article analyses the literary and social aspects of the two documents. Although the anonymous author of the first collection combines accounts of a patriographic nature with healings of prestigious figures (the imperial family and high dignitaries), the author of the second collection, Nicephorus Callistus Xanthopoulos, also describes the healings of ordinary people, thus giving his work a hagiographical function. The study ends with two tables arranged by names, illnesses and the various means of healing employed in the two collections. Efthymiadis Stephanos.
