Epicurus on eidola. Peri phuseos book II. Update, Proposals, and Discussions

Live imaging reveals a new role for the sigma-1 (σ1) receptor in allowing microglia to leave brain injuries
Microglial cells are responsible for clearing and maintaining the central nervous system (CNS) microenvironment.
Upon brain damage, they move toward injuries to clear the area by engulfing dying neurons.
However, in the context of many neurological disorders chronic microglial responses are responsible
for neurodegeneration. Therefore, it is important to understand how these cells can be “switched-off”
and regain their ramified state. Current research suggests that microglial inflammatory responses can be
inhibited by sigma () receptor activation. Here, we take advantage of the optical transparency of the
zebrafish embryo to study the role of 1 receptor in microglia in an intact living brain. By combining
chemical approaches with real time imaging we found that treatment with PB190, a 1 agonist, blocks
microglial migration toward injuries leaving cellular baseline motility and the engulfment of apoptotic
neurons unaffected. Most importantly, by taking a reverse genetic approach, we discovered that the role
of 1 in vivo is to “switch-off” microglia after they responded to an injury allowing for these cells to
leave the site of damage. This indicates that pharmacological manipulation of 1 receptor modulates
microglial responses providing new approaches to reduce the devastating impact that microglia have in
neurodegenerative diseases

Towards a re-conceptualisation of farm types in the urban fringe: empirical evidence from the Regional Park of "Campi Flegrei" in the metropolitan area of Naples (Italy)
The paper analyzes the effects of urbanisation on organisational and productive processes of a farm. The theoretical framework used belongs to Heimilich and Anderson (2001) and Van der Ploeg and colleagues (2002). An adapted version of it allowed for describing and evaluating the relationships between urbanisation and modification of farm-styles in the city belt. The study refers to the area of the Regional Park of Campi Flegrei, in the metropolitan region of Naples (Italy). Specifically, the “adaptive” capacity of farms when reacting to changes in the socio-economic context has been analysed. A conceptual model, which re-evaluates the “farm-style approach” developed for the rural area, has been used to represent the behaviour of the farmers in relation to the degree of adaptation/rejection to urbanisation processes. Subsequently, among the most effective and efficient measures of intervention for supporting agricultural activities in the urban fringe, one of the most innovative development initiative is the Community Supported Agriculture, which has been taken into consideration for future applications to farms of the area
"The love that made hell, paradise." Ouida re-writing the Paolo and Francesca theme in Held in Bondage
The bestselling Victorian author Ouida reveals in her novels, and, in particular, Held in Bondage, an extraordinary knowledge od Dante, by using characters and themes from the Commedia. The Paolo and Francesca theme actually constitutes part of the plot of the novel and is to be found in many of her other works, short stories and non-fiction writing

Laser therapy in retrograde peri-implantitis. Case reports.
Background: The term retrograde peri-implantitis is commonly used to describe lesions in the periapical region of dental implant. It is defined as a clinically symptomatic periapical lesion ( diagnosed as radiolucency) that develops shortly after implant insertion while the coronal portion of the implant achieves a normal osseointegration. Etiologic factors that lead to retrograde peri-implantitis include, inter alia, the presence of a pre-existing inflammation. Information about the incidence and treatment of retrograde peri-implantitis is scarce and mostly collected from some sporadic case reports. The aim of this study is to compare manual debridement versus Er:YAG laser treatment as treatment modalities for retrograde preri-implantitis.
Materials and methods: Two patients, that showed a radiolucency around the most apical part of the implant, were included in this study. Both patients were treated with a surgical procedure. The protocol included elevation of a full-thickness flap, complete removal of granulation tissue with hand instruments and curettage of the bony cavity walls. One of two patients also received treatment with Er:YAG laser. The patients were followed at 1 week, 1 month, 3 months, 6 months and 1 year postoperatively.
Results: A 1-month follow-up, both two patients showed no pain or discomfort. No sign of infection was noted. A 3-months follow-up, the patient, who was treated only with manual debridement, showed a recurrence of the lesion while in the patient, who was treated with Er: YAG laser, was observed further progress of bone healing. The radiographic examinations of the patient who was treated with laser, at 6-months follow-up and at 1-year follow-up, showed increase radiographic bone density and new bone formation at the apical region of the implant. The patient remained asymptomatic.
Discussion: The periapical lesion around the implants is a possible cause for implant failure. Quiryen and colleagues suggest that some of the early failures may be linked with an endodontic pathology remaining after tooth extraction. They also reported an almost three times higher incidence of failure for implants suffering from apical peri-implantitis when a endodontic pathology around previously extracted teeth was present. They also suggested that removal of all granulation tissue was sufficient to prevent further progression of the disease. This study instead shows that the addition of treatment with Er:YAG laser may decrease the risk of lesion recurrence
