Re-urbanization of Population in the Tokyo Metropolitan Area: ROXY-index / Spatial-cycle Analysis for the Period 1947-2005
application/pdfThe four major stages of the spatial-cycles are quantitatively examined, by use of the Japan's population census data extending over the past sixty years (for the period 1947-2005), for the Tokyo Metropolitan Area and its five major railway-line regions. The spatial-cycle hypothesis constructed by Klaassen and the method of the Roxy-index analysis developed by the first author, are applied to our investigation. The results obtained clearly illuminate the recent trend of the re-urbanization of the population in the Tokyo Metropolitan Area as a whole and its five major railway-line regions as well. This would imply that the core-area part of the Tokyo Metropolitan Area will play an increasingly critical role in the future urban policies of Japan. Among other findings is the possible existence of the metropolitan (or urban) spatial cycles of the estimated length of the period of 80~ 100 years.departmental bulletin pape
‘I’m not really a clown’: critical reflection on a Clown Cabaret Scratch Night
This article is a critical reflection on the Clown Cabaret
Scratch Night at Assembly Roxy, 14 November 2014,
organised by Plutôt la Vie and CloWnStePPing. It considers
the variety of acts included in the show and how this
plurality connects to the wider contemporary genre of
theatre clown. From a participant-observer perspective, I
introduce the tensions and contradictions in and between
the acts. I suggest that this event can provide a snapshot of
how the genre is currently perceived and practiced in
Scotland today. Of particular prominence are the role of the
‘flop’ in the clown’s relationship with the audience, the
tension between rehearsal and spontaneity, and the
connection to the ‘authentic self ’ of the performer this
implies.Publisher PD
Taking A Capella back to the Chinese Market – Working with The Metro Group through their China tour and mainland promotion
This Culminating Experience intends to develop such management plan that can be timely executed for the Metro Vocal Group (MVG), an American A Capella group based in Hong Kong specialized in singing asian pop/rock songs, with the author taking on the role of an artist manager. The group was formed in 1998 and consists of four male singers (Eric Monson, Sean Oliver, Michael Lance, Kevin Thornton) individually from Iowa, Ohio, Nebraska, and Kentucky in the USA. Each individual member has extensive experience in vocal performances. MVG has been in residency in Hong Kong since 2005 and is now touring around Asia and Oceania, such as Taiwan, South Korea, Vietnam, southern part of China, and Australia. The unique area that MVP mainly specializes in singing - pop & rock Chinese & Cantonese songs with occasional arrangements of Western pop songs, has gained a special niche market space for the career development of MVP within Asia. The group has released seven albums, including one all-Chinese album No Borders and is now expanding their musical trace into the Greater China.https://remix.berklee.edu/graduate-studies-global-entertainment-business/1247/thumbnail.jp

La filature

'Beats apart': a comparative history of youth culture and popular music in Liverpool and Newcastle upon Tyne, 1956 - 1965
This study explores the themes of continuity and change in twentieth-century British cultural history, particularities of place and regional identity in the North of England, and the cultural transfer of North American popular music in Britain between 1956 and 1965. By means of a comparative historical investigation of youth culture and popular music in Liverpool and Newcastle upon Tyne, the work engages with existing debate among historians surrounding the nature and extent of cultural change for the period usually referred to as „The Sixties?, and whether or not it is possible to speak of a „Cultural Revolution?. Spanning the years between the initial impact of rock „n? roll and the immediate aftermath of the Beat Boom of 1963-64, a phenomenon described by one commentator as representing „perhaps the North's greatest single cultural „putsch??, the thesis examines the role of urban and regional identity in the process of cultural production, reproduction, and consumption. Theoretical insights derived from the associated disciplines of sociology and cultural studies are employed which offer an opportunity for a novel and dynamic analysis and interpretation of the empirical historical evidence. This research is especially pertinent at a time when historians are increasingly looking to the regional and inter-regional, as opposed to the national and international, for explanations of continuity and change. There is a burgeoning interest in the history of popular culture inspired by the transition of post-modern society from one of production to consumption. Cultural and economic theorists have called for more historical investigation to inform current debates regarding the post-modern city?s ability to attract a „creative class? as a means towards urban regeneration. This study informs these debates by bringing the above themes together in a unique historical analysis of cultural continuity and change, Northern identity, and popular music
Proverb lore in Sidney.
The purpose of this study is to show the use of proverbs in the works of Sir Philip Sidney. The method has been to select from the author's works passages which in sentiment and style seemed to indicate the manner of the proverb. These, in turn, have been sought out in established collections of proverbs and in the writings of other authors contemporaneous with, preceding, or succeeding Sidney, such as would seem to indicate that the passages in question were, or had been, or came to be in current circulation as proverbial sayings: that they occurred in other writings with a definite, clearly defined meaning such as that employed in Sidney, and maintained a certain characteristic rigidity of form which together with their content would seem to identify them as proverbs. Such a study has already been made of the works of Lyly, Pettie, Spenser, and Shakespeare, but until now no such analysis has been made of the works of Sidney. In each instance the proverb from Sidney occurs first under the heading which announces its theme, and to establish it as a true proverb parallels, chiefly early and contemporary, are cited. The titles are original and by no means arbitrary. Where possible, actual proverbs have been preferred as headings. They have not been arranged alphabetically in strict adherence to the first word occurring in the title, but rather, according to some key-word which seems best to sum up the meaning of the passage or phrase in question.
Following the main text are four appendices containing related material quoted from Sidney which throw light on his character and style of writing. Appendix A contains a group of sententious sayings for which sufficient evidence was not found to justify their consideration as proverbs; in Appendix B brief descriptions and characterizations, especially those containing humor, have been selected in Appendix C (an incidental study) attention has been given to passages relating to music and its coordination with poetry; in Appendix D the spiritual nature of Sidney and his attitude towards his own literary attainments are the motives of the selections
