The political role of the people's liberation army 1949-1973
This thesis is to study the political role of the People's Liberation Army from the approach of structure and function. The framework of the thesis consists of three major parts, first, the influence of Chinese traditional political culture on, and the formation of, the political role of the PL A; second, the influence of domestic political struggles and external military conflicts on the development of the political role of the PLA; and the third, the analysis of the transition of the PLA's political role from the structure and personnel arrangements of the CCPCC Within the above-mentioned three scopes, this thesis make a thorough discussion on the following: (1) The relationship between the structure of the PRC and the formation of the PLA's political role; (2) How has ideology influenced the army's political role; (3) What is Mao's viewpoint and his influence on the development of the army's political role; (4) What is the link between the army and the party, and how has this developed; (6) What accounts for the expansion of the PLA's political functions; (7) What is the influence of political factional struggles on the PLA's political role; (8) Is it political institution or military institution that controls the recruitment of the military elite; (9) What are the disparities between the military elite in handling international conflicts and what are their political considerations; (10) What is the Party's position in the army; (11) How have the Party’s important meetings and personnel arrangements influenced the rise and fall of the PLA's political role

Muscle activation of vastus medialis obliquus and vastus lateralis during a dynamic leg press exercise with and without isometric hip adduction
Objectives: To investigate the effects of submaximal and vigorous isometric hip adduction on the vastus medialis obliquus (VMO) and vastus lateralis (VL) activity during the leg press exercise from 90 degrees of knee flexion until full extension. ;Design: Experimental. ;Setting: University biomechanics laboratory. ;Participants: Ten healthy male college students. ;Main outcome measures: Electromyographic (EMG) activation of VMO, VL and hip adductor longus (HAL) of the dominant leg were recorded during double leg press (LP), leg press with submaximal isometric hip adduction force (LP+), and leg press with vigorous isometric hip adduction force (LP++). The VMO, VL muscle activation, as well as the VMO/VL ratio between different leg press exercises were analyzed by MANOVA over concentric and eccentric phases, and in 15 degrees increments of knee flexion motion. The effect size was calculated. ;Results: Neither LP+ nor LP++ changed the overall VMO-VL activation patterns. Specific to knee angle, however, small to medium effect size was shown with incorporation of isometric hip adduction to the leg press exercise for VMO/VL ratio. ;Conclusion: Targeted training using the leg press exercise to the last 45 degrees of knee extension/flexion with vigorous hip adduction may be useful in promoting a greater VMO/VL ratio. Analysis and Cases Study of BEMS Application and Its Classification Indexes
In the year of 1990, the BEMS concept has been developed into an open web-based structure where internet has been utilized widely. Universally adapted communication protocols, such as BACNet and Lonworks have been applied in engineering practices and created huge opportunity for building energy conservation designs.
In this research, the development of the BEMS system has been discussed and analyzed in detail including its hardware infrastructure and software requirements, so that the HVAC , lighting and power subsystems can be integrated while remote control can be achieved. The classification of BEMS system, to be adapted in Taiwan, has been proposed and published by the end of year 2006, which enables real-time online building energy auditing with energy conservation potential assessed.
Design examples, such as general hospitals, department stores, hotels, have been selected and analyzed to demonstrate the feasibility in adapting BEMS system in Taiwan with successful results
Predictors of treatment response to strengthening and stretching exercise for patellofemoral pain: an examination of patellar alignment
[[abstract]]Background
Closed kinetic chain and quadriceps strengthening, combined with flexibility exercises of the lower limb musculature, is a common treatment for patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS). The effectiveness has been well documented; however, very little is known about which factors predict treatment success.
Methods
A total of 43 female subjects with PFPS participated in an eight-week progressive leg press (LP) strengthening and stretching exercise program. A decrease of 1.5 cm on a 10 cm visual analog scale (VAS) score was used as an indicator for treatment success. The baseline patellar tilt angle difference (PTA-d) due to quadriceps contraction prior to treatment was evaluated as a predictor of treatment success. The logistic regression and receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curve analysis were performed to investigate the predictive value of PTA-d.
Results
PTA-d could significantly predict the treatment success of LP strengthening and stretching exercises. The odds ratio (OR) for having an unsuccessful outcome was 1.19 (95% confidence interval (CI), 1.03−1.39, P < 0.021) per degree increment of PTA-d. The most optimal cut-off value for the clinical discrimination of treatment success after LP strengthening and stretching exercise was − 1.5° of PTA-d (sensitivity = 0.74, specificity = 0.71). The area under the ROC curve was 0.73 (standard error = 0.08).
Conclusions
Female patients with PFPS whose quadriceps contraction reduced the lateral patellar tilt prior to LP strengthening and stretching exercise treatment are more likely to experience pain relief. It seems clinically important to check dynamic patellar tilt characteristics before treatment to aid in clinical decision making
Place attachment of Ngāi Te Ahi to Hairini Marae
Twelve members of Ngāi Te Ahi, a hapū from Tauranga, were interviewed to explore how they talk about their place attachment to Hairini Marae. This was organized around five key dimensions of place attachment taken from the literature—continuity, distinctiveness, symbolism, attachment and familiarity. We found that in discussing all dimensions, place attachment was equally about social and cultural relationships, history, and socialization. Place attachment for groups such as Māori is complex because it encompasses all social relationships past and present. The implication for those working with Māori is to take seriously the wider connotations of place when talking to Māori about marae, traditional homelands, and their land
“BODY-SNATCHING”: Changes to coroners legislation and possible Māori responses
The term body-snatcher has enjoyed a renaissance in the media recently, as various Māori have moved to reclaim their deceased relations. From a Māori perspective, the claiming of bodies has nothing to do with body-snatching, a term that referred to episodes in the West. Indeed, Māori may see some laws themselves as instruments that snatch the body, in contravention of Māori customs. One of these laws, the Coroners Act 2006, may have made some progress by quietly acknowledging these customs in many ways, but that is merely the start of a greater dialogue between Māori and the Crown in relation to proper Māori respect of the dead body

Tsung-Hsien Yang's compositional style and his Sonata for Violin and Piano
The research conducted on Tsung-Hsien Yang's compositions provides a general description of the composer's musical style following a brief description of Taiwan's social and cultural history. Information from other research papers on the composer as well as interviews conducted by the author, concise descriptions of every composition and a short biography are presented. The analysis of his compositional output is divided into three periods according to the changes in his surroundings and influences. The Sonata for Violin and Piano was examined analytically with regard to its structure, melodic motives and rhythmic ideas. In addition, the study explored the composer's personal statement in the Violin Sonata---his "subtext" and philosophy as expressed through musical means. In the last chapter, some recommendations are given with regard to performing the piece as related to individual instrument technique as well as the ensemble.</p
