On the control of the absorption of an Acoustic Black Hole by using attached point supports

    No full text
The Acoustic Black Hole (ABH) embedded in a beam is a termination that provides effective vibration absorption. The ABH effect, usually achieved by adding a visco-elastic coating in the flexible part of the termination, results in a reflection coefficient that varies with frequency, with local maxima and minima associated with local modes trapped in the termination. The density of these modes induces narrow absorption bands whose overlap makes the ABH very efficient from a cut-on frequency. In this paper, a new way to take advantage of the ABH effect is developed analytically, numerically and experimentally by applying a localised damping to the termination by means of elastic and damping point supports. This new type of device provides a new way to control the ABH effect inducing low reflection coefficient values over wide and low frequency ranges.

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Vibration damping in beams using the Acoustic Black Hole effect

Vibration damping of mechanical structures plays an important role in the design of many industrial systems. Classical methods for reducing vibrations using viscoelastic layers glued to the structure usually result in added mass on the treated structure, which may be prohibitive in the transportation industry for ecological and economical reasons. The "Acoustic Black Hole" (ABH) effect is a lightweight passive vibration technique: the flexural waves propagating in a beam extremity tapered with a power law profile are efficiently dissipated if an absorbing layer is placed where the thickness is minimum.A preliminary study experimentally confirms the potential of ABH as an efficient strategy for vibration damping: a modal analysis shows that the ABH significantly increases the Modal Overlap Factor (MOF) of the beam, thus reducing the resonant behaviour of the structure. An analysis based on a wave approach clearly shows that the reflection coefficient of an ABH termination has small values. Further investigations, including a two dimensional numerical model of the structure developed in order to understand its behaviour, show that the increase of MOF can be explained partly by an increase of the modal density and mostly by a high damping of a number of modes of the structure due to energy localisation in the tapered region. It is shown that the ABH beam possesses two-dimensional local modes. A waveguide model of an ABH termination with tip imperfection, which cannot be avoided in practice, shows that incident energy is scattered on local modes and that imperfections enhance the damping effect

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

In urban areas, noise has become the main form of ''pollution'' recognized by the population. To address this major issue for society, much research has helped to describe the acoustic propagation in urban areas. However, as consequence of the high geometrical and physical complexity of urban areas, the energetic models implemented in usual predictive software limit the physical description of sound fields. It appears that fundamental work on acoustic propagation in complex environments must be pursued upstream from applications directly related to urban acoustics. In this context of upstream research, the essential idea of this work is to consider the street as an open waveguide. Indeed, the typical elongated shape promotes guided waves along the axis of the street. In contrast, the opening of this guide on an infinite domain - the sky - results in wave radiation leading to energy losses. The study of these competitive effects between guided waves and radiated waves is the key point of this work. To solve the wave equation in such an open three-dimensional guide, the principle of modal decomposition is used. In this approach, the wave field is a combination of a set of modes (called modal basis) whose contributions notably depend on end conditions at the guide extremities. The extension of the modal approach to the case of open waveguides need to introduce the concept of leaky modes. Through a preliminary study about two-dimensional closed guides with variable cross-section, the possibilities of the modal approach are apprehended in simple cases in order to be extended to the more complex case of three-dimensional open guides. Subsequently, a first work about leaky modes is done in the academic case of an open cylindrical guide with rectangular cross-section. In this work, the behavior and properties of leaky modes are studied in details when they are used in a modal approach. It is notably shown that only a small number of modes is necessary to accurately describe the field. Based on the findings of this first research, a coupled Modal-Finite Elements method, more suitable to the ''urban waveguide'' specificities is proposed. This work shows how, using PML (Perfectly Matched Layers), a new problem of propagation in closed guide may be substituted for the original problem of propagation in open guide. In this approach, several characteristics of the geometrical and physical complexity of urban areas can be taken into account. Illustrations based on the numerical implementation of the method reveal physical phenomena related to irregularities and absorption of facades, or the consideration of meteorological effects, and open both academic and applied research prospects.

Non-linear vibration attenuation of hollow modal structures by the addition of granular materials

The use of granular material in industrial structures to reduce vibration levels is an alternative toviscoelastic surfacing, which is highly dependent on temperature conditions. For the naval and aeronauticalindustry, the challenge is to improve reliability and comfort. The levels of interaction between the grainsdepend on the control parameters (acceleration level), but also on the characteristics of the constituentmaterials of the grains, the moisture content of the surrounding fluid, the geometry and dimensions of thegrains, as well as their containment conditions. For a given acceleration, independent of the point of structure, the relevance of the choice of a granularmaterial with respect to the same non-deformable mass is demonstrated by the study of the vibration of a rigidcavity mounted on an oscillator partially filled. The parametric variations of the types of confinement in thecavity as well as the constituent material of the grains make it possible to extract the influent parameters inthe energy dissipation. The development of an analytical model with localized constants allows to simulate theenergy dissipated by the system via a reduced number of coefficients representing the vibratory dynamics ofthe granular matter. The comparison of this model with experiments makes it possible to validate itseffectiveness and its predictive character in the dissipation of the vibratory energy of a dynamic system. For a modal structure, where the acceleration level is dependent on the point of the structure, theoptimization of the grain cluster positioning is shown
