Conflict between elephants and humans occurs almost every year in Pinggir District, Bengkalis Regency, Riau Province. This study aims to determine the characteristics of Human-Elephant conflict in Pinggir District, Bengkalis Regency and its mitigation techniques. Data collection was carried out by purposive sampling. Purposive sampling was conducted by interviewing respondents who had experienced conflicts with elephants. Based on the interviews results, the Human-Elephant conflict occur almost every year where in the 2000s there were many conflicts between elephants and humans and now in 2021 and 2022 there is a decline in elephant-human conflicts. This is because the elephants in Pinggir District have moved to other locations such as the Giam Siak Kecil enclave. The results of the interview also informed that only certain locations experienced conflict between elephants and humans, especially the paths that were often traversed by elephants. Mitigation techniques that are mostly done by the community in dealing with conflicts with elephants are the sounds of using firecrackers and cannons, evictions and gardening by the community and making elephant trenches for people who have strong capital

The existence of urban forests should be referred to as a place to preserve the environment, seeing from the start of the density of settlements that cause less and less space as a place to preserve the environment. The Bungin Island City Forest area in Koto Teluk Kuantan Village is one of the potential tourist destination objects to be offered when tourists visit Jalur City. The aim of this research was to examine the structure and composition of the stands in the Bungin Island City Forest, located in Kuantan Singingi Regency. The research method used systematic sampling method by collecting data directly at the research location. Variables observed were the number of individuals, diameter and height of trees. Vegetation data collection was carried out using the creation of a square plot unit measuring 20 m x 20 m with the determination of the plot location using systematic sampling with random start, namely taking sample plots systematically and randomly started. The data that has been obtained is analyzed descriptively quantitative which is done to obtain a clear picture of the state of the urban forest. The results of the study obtained 23 plant species in the urban forest of Bungin Island with the highest importance value index (INP) is duku plant with a value of 47,10 at the tree level, which means that this plant is the dominant species in the urban forest of Bungin Island. The conclusion of this study shows that the urban forest of Bungin Island is composed of 23 species grouped in 20 families and the composition of the stand is composed of 228 plants with the highest canopy statification in stratum C (subcanopy) followed by stratum B (canopy), stratum D (understory) and stratum A (emergent)

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Tin mining activities in Siabu Village, Salo District, Kampar Regency, have environmental impacts, leading to soil pollution by heavy metals, particularly lead (Pb). This study aims to evaluate the potential and growth of five plant species (A. mangium, P. falcataria, S. macrophylla, I. cylindrica, and M. malabathricum) in phytoremediation of soil contaminated with lead from tin mining. The research employed a completely randomized design with five treatments and four replications, totaling 20 experimental units. Data were analyzed using SPSS 20.0, and if significant, further analysis was conducted using Duncan\u27s New Multiple Range Test (DNMRT) at a 5% level of significance. The results of the research that had been conducted showed that the five types of plants had the potential to absorb the heavy metal lead (Pb) but with different absorption concentration levels. The highest absorption of lead (Pb) in the seedling group was P1 (A. mangium) treatment with the ability to absorb Pb metal at 6.33 ppm and the remaining Pb metal content in the soil of 14.18 ppm, while the absorption of heavy metal lead (Pb) which was highest in the lower vegetation group was treatment P5 (M. malabathricum) of 9.10 ppm with the remaining Pb metal content in the soil of 7.75 ppm.  Keywords: Lead (Pb), Pollution, Phytoremediation, Heavy metalsKegiatan penambangan timah di Desa Siabu, Kecamatan Salo, Kabupaten Kampar, menimbulkan dampak pencemaran tanah oleh logam berat, khususnya timbal (Pb). Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    Get PDF
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
